Once Upon A Wire Wheel by Bernie and Norm Koglin This is the first in a series of articles recalling a few highlights from the fifty year history of the Chicago Region SCCA. Most of the information in this article is found in a history of the Club’s early years written by Fred Wacker some years ago. We also wish to thank Burdie Martin for the loan of his copies of the very earliest issues of PISTON PATTER which are an invaluable source. In the Beginning…… 1948- 1954 The term “sports car” would have meant very little to a vast majority of Americans in the years right after World War II. Then, MG TC’s began arriving in the U.S. and a few people started to take notice. Among them was Fred Wacker, who purchased one of the first little British cars in early 1948. In May of that year, Fred and Bud Seaverns drove the MG to Indiana-polis for the 500. After the race they were caught in the usual traffic jam, and came across Bill Spear and Sam Bailey, a couple of New Yorkers, in a Bentley. A mutual interest in their respective cars led to introductions, and in due course Fred and Bud heard of the “Sports Car Club of America” for the first time. Ownership of a “sports car” was an SCCA membership requirement at that time. Since Fred qualified in that respect, Bill and Sam suggested he become a member of the Club. After joining, Fred discovered there was no Chicago Region. -

Our Hallett Focus Event quali- fies on those terms, as it was so much racing, so much traveling, so much goofing off with other MG racer types, etc., etc. It appears as if there is little difference in ‘vintage’ attitude among MG vintage racers across the 48 states and Canada, as witnessed on-track and in the paddock at Hallett. -

Not content to stay stagnate, our Club Racing program continues to evolve. In 2011, we began the BFGoodrich Tires SCCA Super Tour program. With the help of our partner, BFGoodrich Tires, the series expanded to nine events for 2012, and included one special event in each division. These race weekends featured elements that aren’t always available at National Races, adding to the competitors’ experi- ence. We also unveiled the Majors program in the middle part of the coun- try this season, giving racers in the Rocky Mountain, Midwest and Southwest Divisions an opportunity to run for a larger championship without having to travel the country. -

Dear SCCA Media Partners, Welcome to what is truly a new era of the Sports Car Club of America, as the SCCA National Champi- onship Runoffs heads west for the first time in 46 years to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. This event, made possible with the help of our friends and partners at Mazda and the Sports Car Rac- ing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP), was met with questions at its announcement that have been answered in a big way, with more than 530 drivers on the entry list and a rejunvenaton of the west coast program all season long. While we haven’t been west of the Rockies since River- side International Raceway in 1968, it’s hard to believe it will be that long before we return again. The question on everyone’s mind, even more than usual, is who is going to win? Are there hidden gems on the west coast who may be making their first Runoffs appearance that will make a name for themselves on the national stage, or will the traditional contenders learn a new track quickly enough to hold their titles? My guess is that we’ll see some of each. -

Looks like it will be a very good turnout. We are expecting 50 cars. Please fill out the event registration form below and and mail back to the club. I am sorry to report that there will not be a tour of the Chrysler or Ford Proving Grounds. I know that this is a disappointment, but the short answer is that we were turned down. In a bit of good news, we have been invited to participate at the Roush Automotive Museum open house in nearby Livonia. This will be a fun and racing oriented event. The Roush museum is typically not open to the public. We have also secured liability insurance specifically for the event. To cover a portion of that cost, there will be a $20 participants fee per family. It will also cover a donation we have agreed to make to a local church providing us trailer parking. The club treasury will pick up any remaining shortfall of the insurance expense. Here is the final event schedule: Tuesday, June 11th: Arrival day, register, offsite parking for trucks and trailers. Wednesday, June 12th: Lingenfelter Performance tour, lunch locally, rest of afternoon pending and/or relaxation time. Thursday, June 13th: Jiffy Mix factory tour in Chelsea in morning. Lunch locally. Then we leave for car show and open house at the Roush Performance Museum in Livonia. The official show hours are 5 to 8 PM, but we need to be there much earlier to set up. -
1975 Dekon Monza
1975 DeKon Monza Chassis 1005 History DeKon Monza Chassis 1005 was finished in June 1975. However, the story of DeKon 1005 begins a decade before the car was built. The story of this, and all the DeKon Monza’s, is the story of the intertwined lives of Allan Moffat, Lee Dykstra, and Horst Kwech. Allan Moffat was born on November 10. 1939. Moffat was born in Canada, but his family moved to South Africa. Moffat was educated in Johannesburg. In 1960, the Moffat family moved to Australia. Australia suited Moffat well, and he remains there in Melbourne. Moffat attempted develop a career in auto racing in Australia. By 1964, he believed his career would be best served by spending some time in the United States. “So he went to North America and began associating himself with racing teams and future sponsors …” Peter Ford, “Moffat! From the Beginning”, Chequered Flag, December 1970. Horst Kwech was born in Gosford, Australia in 1938. In 1963, Kwech moved to the Chicago, Illinois in the United States. Like Moffat, Kwech moved to the U.S. to pursue a career in auto racing. Both drivers achieved some success in the U.S.. However, it was in the SCCA Trans American Sedan Championship that they showed surprising form. On March 25, 1966, Kwech finished fifth overall the first ever Trans Am race. Kwech achieved this result despite driving in the under two-liter class in an Alfa Romeo GTA. In the next Trans Am race, Kwech finished second overall and first in class. The third Trans Am race was the Bryar 250 on July 8, 1966.
