Not content to stay stagnate, our Club Racing program continues to evolve. In 2011, we began the BFGoodrich Tires SCCA Super Tour program. With the help of our partner, BFGoodrich Tires, the series expanded to nine events for 2012, and included one special event in each division. These race weekends featured elements that aren’t always available at National Races, adding to the competitors’ experi- ence. We also unveiled the Majors program in the middle part of the coun- try this season, giving racers in the Rocky Mountain, Midwest and Southwest Divisions an opportunity to run for a larger championship without having to travel the country.

Dear SCCA Media Partners, Welcome to what is truly a new era of the Sports Car Club of America, as the SCCA National Champi- onship Runoffs heads west for the first time in 46 years to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. This event, made possible with the help of our friends and partners at Mazda and the Sports Car Rac- ing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP), was met with questions at its announcement that have been answered in a big way, with more than 530 drivers on the entry list and a rejunvenaton of the west coast program all season long. While we haven’t been west of the Rockies since River- side International Raceway in 1968, it’s hard to believe it will be that long before we return again. The question on everyone’s mind, even more than usual, is who is going to win? Are there hidden gems on the west coast who may be making their first Runoffs appearance that will make a name for themselves on the national stage, or will the traditional contenders learn a new track quickly enough to hold their titles? My guess is that we’ll see some of each.

1975 DeKon Monza Chassis 1005 History DeKon Monza Chassis 1005 was finished in June 1975. However, the story of DeKon 1005 begins a decade before the car was built. The story of this, and all the DeKon Monza’s, is the story of the intertwined lives of Allan Moffat, Lee Dykstra, and Horst Kwech. Allan Moffat was born on November 10. 1939. Moffat was born in Canada, but his family moved to South Africa. Moffat was educated in Johannesburg. In 1960, the Moffat family moved to Australia. Australia suited Moffat well, and he remains there in Melbourne. Moffat attempted develop a career in auto racing in Australia. By 1964, he believed his career would be best served by spending some time in the United States. “So he went to North America and began associating himself with racing teams and future sponsors …” Peter Ford, “Moffat! From the Beginning”, Chequered Flag, December 1970. Horst Kwech was born in Gosford, Australia in 1938. In 1963, Kwech moved to the Chicago, Illinois in the United States. Like Moffat, Kwech moved to the U.S. to pursue a career in auto racing. Both drivers achieved some success in the U.S.. However, it was in the SCCA Trans American Sedan Championship that they showed surprising form. On March 25, 1966, Kwech finished fifth overall the first ever Trans Am race. Kwech achieved this result despite driving in the under two-liter class in an Alfa Romeo GTA. In the next Trans Am race, Kwech finished second overall and first in class. The third Trans Am race was the Bryar 250 on July 8, 1966.

HOW TO BUILD AN IMSA MONZA The man who built cars for A.J. Foyt, John Greenwood, Roger Penske and Mark Donohue and reveals what went into his IMSA GT Chevrolet Monza road racer. T’s A WARM, SUNNY SATURDAY IN LATE NOVEMBER 1975 at Daytona International Speedway and some 70 Camel GT race cars are lined up in two neat rows waiting to go out for practice. John IGreenwood is ready with his latest monster Corvette, and the three-strong German factory BMW team is looking for its third straight Daytona IMSA win. No less than seven Chevy Monzas were entered for the season finale event, but two had canceled at the last minute. Two-time Indy winner Al Unser and Australian champion Allan Moffat are driving a pair of Monzas built by Horst Kwech's DeKon engineering, which has already proven second only to the Greenwood machines in speed. There is also an orange Red Roof Inn-sponsored DeKon Monza for Columbus, Ohio SCCA amateur champion Jim Trueman and a Grant King-built dark blue version for Jacksonville, FL Corvette driver Tom Nehl. The fifth Monza on hand is a bright yellow job sitting right behind Unser's car. The yellow number 50 car is the spanking fresh creation of Ron Fournier's Royal Oak, MI, Race Craft shop, built for Bob Lazebnik of Jackson, MI, and driven by John Morton. There is an impressive list of credentials behind this car: builder Fournier worked for Holman and Moody, Kar Kraft, Roger Penske and A.J. Foyt, none of whom are known for fielding losing race cars.
