  • William Ernest Henley - Poems
Classic Poetry Series William Ernest Henley - poems - Publication Date: 2004 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive William Ernest Henley(1849 - 1902) William Ernest Henley (August 23, 1849 - July 11, 1903) was a British poet, critic and editor. Henley was born in Gloucester and educated at the Crypt Grammar School. The school was a poor relation of the Cathedral School, and Henley indicated its shortcomings in his article (Pall Mall Magazine, Nov. 1900) on T. E. Brown the poet, who was headmaster there for a brief period. Brown's appointment was a stroke of luck for Henley, for whom it represented a first acquaintance with a man of genius. "He was singularly kind to me at a moment when I needed kindness even more than I needed encouragement." Brown did him the essential service of lending him books. Henley was no classical scholar, but his knowledge and love of literature were vital. After suffering tuberculosis as a boy, he found himself, in 1874, aged twenty- five, an inmate of the hospital at Edinburgh. From there he sent to the Cornhill Magazine where he wrote poems in irregular rhythms, describing with poignant force his experiences in hospital. Leslie Stephen, then editor, visited his contributor in hospital and took Robert Louis Stevenson, another recruit of the Cornhill, with him. The meeting between Stevenson and Henley, and the friendship of which it was the beginning, form one of the best-known episodes in English literature (see Stevenson's letter to Mrs Sitwell, Jan. 1875, and Henley's poems "An Apparition" and "Envoy to Charles Baxter").

The story, set in fifteenth-century Paris, concerns a dissolute evening’s drinking which ends with a murder; the poet (and rogue) Francis Villon flees the scene, finding shelter in the home of the Lord of Brisetout, who takes it upon himself to lecture Villon on his moral failings.

  • The Stevenson Circle
The Stevenson Circle Archer, William (1856-1924), journalist and critic. He was dramatic critic for Figaro, and later for the World and the Star. An admirer of Ibsen's work, he was instrumental in introduc- ing Ibsen's plays to the British public. Archer and RLS fre- quently corresponded, and Archer wrote a perceptive obituary, 'In Memoriam R.L.S.' (New Review, January 1895). Balfour, Dr Lewis (1777-1860), grandfather of RLS. RLS took his middle name of Lewis (later Louis) from his grandfather. As a boy RLS delighted in visiting Colin ton Manse, the home of his grandfather from 1823 to 1860. In his essay 'The Manse', included in MP, he gives an affectionate tribute to his recol- lections of the house and of his grandfather. Balfour, Sir Thomas Graham (1858-1929). One of RLS's many cousins, Balfour made his home at Vailima during the last two and a half years of RLS's life. His biography, published in 1901, is an extremely readable, competent and well-researched account. It suffers, however, from having been prepared so soon after Stevenson's death and is insufficiently detached from the protective influence of his widow. It remains an in- dispensable account of RLS and his circle, though inevitably some of Balfour's judgements have been superseded by later scholarship. Barrie, Sir James Matthew (1860-1937), novelist and playright. His first novel The Little Minister (1891), was much admired by RLS. Barrie was also the author of A Window in Thrums, Margaret Ogilvy, and Sentimental Tommy. His plays include The Admirable Crichton, Peter Pan and What Every Woman Knows.

Professor A.R. Kidwai ACKNOWLEDGEMENT I owe a deep debt of gratitude to my teacher, Prof. Abdur Raheem Kidwai, without whose supervision this work would not have seen the Ught of the day. I am indebted to him not only for being my vigilant supervisor of this thesis, but also owing to the fact that whenever I encroached upon his valuable time, he helped me with his scholarly criticism and constructive suggestions. Despite his engagements, he was kind enough to scrutinize the entire work. For an Arab student like me, who came from a place where English is used only as a foreign lagugage, it was quite a task for me to embark upon a doctoral research. 1 am fortunate enough to have completed my Ph.D. under his superb supervision. I express my gratitude to all my teachers in the Department of English, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, and to the staff of the Maulana Azad Library for their cooperation and invaluable help.

When It Was Alright for Literature to Be EntertainingBy Don QuixoteBefore I picked up this book, I had read only two works by Robert Louis Stevenson. One was _The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde_, which, like the vast majority of its readers, I was not able to read "innocently." This story has become so popular that virtually everyone knows "what's up" with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, which takes away part of the thrill of reading it, though it does not diminish this immortal masterpiece in any way. (If you don't know what I'm talking about, you are truly blessed and I envy you; please get a copy of the book immediately and read it before someone spoils the whole thing for you.) As a child, I had also read the short story "The Bottle Imp," in Spanish, in what was probably a simplified version. I thought it was, like Poe's "The Gold Bug," one of the most wonderful things ever written.

It provides an overview of the impact of One Thousand and One Nights on world literature and goes on to analyse how Foster reimagines One Thousand and One Nights in order to illustrate humanity’s struggle between the spiritual and the material world. Foster constructs a parallel dilemma for Al Morrisey, a secular Australian Jew, and the Shah, a Persian Muslim. Differences between them favours Al’s secularism over the Shah’s Islamic faith, and tends to harden and exaggerate stereotypes, following a typical Orientalist pattern by recreating the structure of One Thousand and One Nights for a Western understanding of and taste for Orientalist material.
