Abstract Little art-historical scholarship has been dedicated to fine art responding to the British home front during the First World War. Within pre-war British society concepts of sexual difference functioned to promote masculine authority. Nevertheless in Britain during wartime enlarged female employment alongside the presence of injured servicemen suggested feminine authority and masculine weakness, thereby temporarily destabilizing pre-war values. Adopting a socio-historical perspective, this thesis argues that artworks engaging with the home front have been largely excluded from art history because of partiality shown towards masculine authority within the matrices of British society. Furthermore, this situation has been supported by the writing of art history, which has, arguably, followed similar premise. -

Communal activism spread and flourished until the mid-1970s in many parts of the world. To analyse this global phenomenon, this thesis explores the similarities and differences between the commune movements of Denmark, UK and the US. By examining the motivations for the communal revival, links with 1960s radicalism, communes’ praxis and outward-facing activities, and the crisis within the commune movement and responses to it, this thesis places communal activism within the context of wider social movements for social change. Challenging existing interpretations which have understood the communal revival as an alternative living experiment to the nuclear family, or as a smaller part of the counter-culture, this thesis argues that the commune participants created varied and new experiments for a total revolution against the prevailing social order and its dominant values and institutions, including the patriarchal family and capitalism. -

chapter 1 Beyond the Gay Ghetto Founding Debates in Gay Liberation In October 1969, Gay Liberation Theater staged a street performance the group called “No Vietnamese Ever Called Me a Queer.” These activ- ists brought their claims to two distinct audiences: fellow students at the University of California, Berkeley’s Sproul Plaza and fellow gay men at a meeting of the San Francisco–based Society for Individual Rights (SIR). The student audience was anti-war but largely straight, while SIR backed gay inclusion in the military and exemplified the moderate center of the “homophile” movement—“homophile” being the name for an existing and older network of gay and lesbian activism. Gay Liberation Theater adapted Muhammad Ali’s statement when refusing the draft that “no Viet Cong ever called me nigger” and, through this, indicted a society that demanded men kill rather than desire one another. They opposed the Vietnam War and spoke to the self-interest of gay men by declaring: “We’re not going to fight in an army that discriminates against us. Nor are we going to fight for a country that will not hire us and fires us. We are going to fight for ourselves and our lovers in places like Berkeley where the Berkeley police last April murdered homosexual brother Frank Bartley (never heard of him?) while cruising in Aquatic Park.” Frank Bartley was a thirty-three-year-old white man who had recently been killed by a plainclothes officer who claimed that Bartley “resisted arrest” and “reached for his groin.”1 In highlighting Bartley’s case, Gay Liberation Theater pushed back against the demands of assim- ilation and respectability and linked opposition to the Vietnam War with 17 Hobson - Lavender and Red.indd 17 29/06/16 4:30 PM 18 | Beyond the Gay Ghetto support for sexual expression. -

Over the course of three decades most historians familiar with the medium have recognized that American comics, since becoming a mass-cultural product in 1939, have matured beyond their humble beginnings as a monthly publication for children. However, historians are not yet in agreement as to when the medium became mature. This thesis proposes that the medium’s maturity was cemented between 1985 and 2000, a much later point in time than existing texts postulate. The project involves the analysis of how an American mass medium, in this case the comic book, matured in the last two decades of the twentieth century. The goal is to show the interconnected relationships and factors that facilitated the maturation of the American sequential art, specifically a focus on a group of British writers working at DC Comics and Vertigo, an alternative imprint under the financial control of DC. -

DEY Guidelines for Talking with Young Children About the Insurrection at the US Capitol On January 6, the world witnessed an unprecedented assault on democracy when a violent mob, incited by President Trump, invaded the Capitol building in Washington, DC to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as the next President and Vice-President of the United States. Threatening the safety of members of Congress, Hill staff, and the Capitol’s everyday working people, all trapped inside and terrorized while this mob ransacked the People’s Building. Watching this unfold was shocking to many adults and, despite their best efforts to shield young children from this reality, they may have been exposed to this despicable event anyway, whether through the media, siblings, friends, or overhear-ing adults’ conversations. This can undermine their sense of safety as well as their social and emotional well-being. While young children are not able to comprehend complicated concepts like an attack on our democracy or the meaning of an attempt-ed coup, they will undoubtedly be frightened and confused by the violent images of the mob as well as the deep and obvious concerns of the adults around them. Archive from “A Secret Location” Small Press / Mimeograph Revolution, 1940s–1970s We are pleased to offer for sale a captivating and important research collection of little magazines and other printed materials that represent, chronicle, and document the proliferation of avant-garde, underground small press publications from the forties to the seventies. The starting point for this collection, “A Secret Location on the Lower East Side,” is the acclaimed New York Public Library exhibition and catalog from 1998, curated by Steve Clay and Rodney Phillips, which documented a period of intense innovation and experimentation in American writing and literary publishing by exploring the small press and mimeograph revolutions. The present collection came into being after the owner “became obsessed with the secretive nature of the works contained in the exhibition’s catalog.” Using the book as a guide, he assembled a singular library that contains many of the rare and fragile little magazines featured in the NYPL exhibition while adding important ancillary material, much of it from a West Coast perspective. Small press publications from the forties through the seventies have increasingly captured the interest of scholars, archivists, curators, poets and collectors over the past two decades. They provide bedrock primary source information for research, analysis, and exhibition and reveal little known aspects of recent cultural activity. The Archive from “A Secret Location” was collected by a reclusive New Jersey inventor and offers a rare glimpse into the diversity of poetic doings and material production that is the Small Press Revolution. -

The most famous of them were the post-spring 1968 Pilote, Charlie Mensuel (debut issue in February 1969), L’Écho des savanes (May 1972), Métal Hurlant (January 1975), and Fluide glacial (May 1975). 02 There appeared simultaneously a handful of more or less short-lived titles— including Zinc (1971-1974), Le Canard sauvage (1973-1974), Mormoil (1974-1975)— whose quick or not-so-quick demises stemmed from insufficiently attractive contents and/or faulty distribution.
