California Hernandez Productions 1981 First printing [32] p., ilus., wrps., foxing to back cover and bottom edge of front cover "This is what is before you now. Our comic. Done our way." So reads the introduction to the first issue of the now legendary Love and Rockets comic. The Hernandez Brothers' creation would become a mainstay in the movement, embodying the do- it-yourself aesthetic of punk (of which the Hernandez Bros were also active participants, playing in bands and designing flyers). With a clean and sophisticated illustration style, as well as an idiosyncratic approach to narrative, they challenged and changed the comics market during the early 1980s, paving the way for future comic auteurs. This is the first issue in unstapled black and white wraps. Not long after being printed Fantagraphics, then a fledgling publisher, picked up the comic and reissued in color illustrated wraps. Our copy of this, the self-published antecedent, is in fine condition but has foxing on the back cover and along some of the edges as well as a chip to the head of the spine. There are more ideas here than most comics, and they're incorporated into the story, even tossed away. Stan “The Circumstance” Green is a young man obsessed with the opposite sex. He lies to no end in attaining his goal. His other roommate is Malik Strong, a brilliant man who is slowly and surely withdrawing from society. Memo’s love interest is Isla Song, the very personification of beauty, brains, and brawn. Memo lives the life of a poor man. He wears the same clothes from high school and often eats the cheapest thing he can find. His furniture is from thrift shops. He walks everywhere and avoids transportation in order to save money. He is a simple man with simple interests. However, deep within lies the heart of a warrior. Often times, his art reflects the power developed by the many years of ridicule from supposed “cool people”. 125. 153222 Parada, Daniel ZOTZ: SERPENT AND SHIELD. Issue #1. San Francisco, California Daniel Parada (Co-edited by Jorge Parada) 2011 1st ed. 9780615562346 4to, wrps, unpag., b+w illus. (cover and to pages in color). “Zotz” means “bat” in some Mayan languages, and it is the title of a comic book created by Daniel Parada. The multi-arc story has supernatural elements and is set in 16th century Mesoamerica, in an imaginary world where the Spaniards never fully conquered the Americas. Zotz centers on the adventures of twin brothers Pakal and Kaan, whose characters are loosely based on Hunahpu and Xbalanque, the Hero twins featured in the Popol Vuh, the sacred K’iche Maya book of creation. Daniel developed the story over the last 6 years, motivated by the lack of Mesoamerican stories in our popular culture. Which is surprising given the epic sagas and existence of advanced cultures (past and present) in Mesoamerica. Trying to capture some of this grandness within a single tale, was perhaps the biggest challenge in the development of Zotz. New Paperback

Trashman is a hero of the working classes and champion of the radical left causes. The Trashman stories are set in a dystopian near-future America, which after having been ravaged by nuclear weapon attacks, has become a fascist police state. The Trashman series is one of the very few super hero stories depicted in the underground comix of the 1960s and 1970s, particularly as a recurring character. Trashman's post-apocalyptic setting and Marxist-anarchist overtones expressed Spain's own social and political beliefs, as well as the sensibilities of the anti-Vietnam War movement and the underground counterculture of the era. Like many underground comix, the Trashman stories are replete with graphic depictions of violence, sex and profanity, which were all but unknown in super hero comics of the past. Gr. 7-10. Professional Mexican wrestler El Zombo Fantasma is having a bad day. Fresh from his last fight, he suddenly finds himself hurtling toward Purgatory after being murdered by a mysterious assassin. Angelo, his heavenly caseworker, informs him that in order to avoid hellfire, he must return to Earth to protect foul-mouthed Belisa Montoya. It seems that 10-year-old Beli is the reincarnation of an Incan goddess who has been stalked through the centuries by Los Mascaras Negros, tribal baddies who want the goddess' power for themselves. It's no surprise who wins the day in this typical superhero graphic novel, but it is tremendous, pile-driving fun getting there. El Zombo, in all his --on--supersteroids glory, explodes off every page with a frenetic energy that is only rivaled by Beli's speedy trash talk. The computer coloration is lush, and the violence is so over the top that any WWF-savvy teen will scarcely bat an eyelash. (Review by Jennifer Hubert of the ALA) New Staplebound Wraps
