www.HendrixWarriors.com 2 coaching staff coaching staff Thad McCracken - Head Coach First Year Hanover ‘04 Thad McCracken, a Bedford, Ind. native, enters his first season at the helm of the men’s basketball program after a standout 2009-10 season as the Hendrix women’s head coach.

McCracken first served as the men’s assistant coach under Dan Priest’s tenure for four seasons (2005-09) and was named the head women’s coach after Chris Hitchcock resigned following the 2008- 09 season.

McCracken guided the Warriors through one of the most excit- ing women’s campaigns in Hendrix history with its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Western Division title after finishing 20-5 overall and 13-3 in SCAC play. Hendrix’s post season run ended with an 86-77 loss to in the semifinal round of the conference tournament.

He takes over a men’s team that won just seven games last season and will look to bring back a winning tradition. “I expect our upperclassmen to bring back the winning mentality like we had in years past. I think they need to accept nothing less than their best, continue to work hard every day, bring out the best in their team- mates and lead by example. I hope to see a lot of discipline out of my team. I hope fans will see a defensive minded team that pays attention to details and plays with a lot of discipline.”

McCracken’s first coaching position was at (Lexington, Ky./NCAA D-III) as an assistant coach, where he helped lead the Pioneers to a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Championship in 2004-05.

While he was coaching at Transylvania, McCracken earned his master’s in Sports Administration from Eastern Kentucky University.

A 2004 graduate of Hanover College, McCracken earned a bachelor’s in Business Administration. He won four HCAC Championships and made two NCAA D-III National Tournament appearances during his playing career at Hanover.

McCracken was honored as a NCAA D-III All-American and HCAC Player-of-the-Year his senior year and HCAC Tournament MVP his junior year. McCracken holds the record for most 3-pointers in a season (76/2003-04) and is tied for most career 3-pointers (216/2001-04) in Hanover’s rich program history.

“I played for a winning program at Hanover and losing was never something we talked about,” said McCracken. “We need to change the mindset here at Hendrix after a tough season last year and get the team to believe in themselves and look at the schedule without thinking there is anyone we cannot beat. I think they are ready to win and prove to people that they have the talent and are a team to be reckoned with in the SCAC.”

In exclusive voting by the head coaches of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), senior guard Kola Alade of Austin College was selected as SCAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Year while ‘Roos head coach Rodney Wecker was named the league’s Coach of the Year. First-year guard Andrew Galow of Rhodes College and sophomore guard Jasen Jonus of Birmingham-Southern College split the vote to share the league’s Newcomer of the Year award while junior center Alex Lloyd of Centre College was named the SCAC Defensive Player of the Year. Alade was the heart and soul of an Austin College squad that matched a school record with 19 wins and earned the top seed in the SCAC West this season. During the regular season, Alade ranked in the top 10 in the league in scoring (15.6 points per game – fourth), steals (1.7 per game – fifth), field goal percentage (49.3% - third) and free-throw percentage (73.5% - seventh). A three-time all-SCAC performer, Alade was the league’s career scoring leader among active players with 1,356 points – which ranks sixth all-time in Austin College history. A three-time SCAC Player-of-the-Week selection over his career, Alade is the first male student-athlete at Austin College – which joined the conference in 2006 – to earn Player-of-the-Year honors in any sport. Wecker, in his third season with Austin College, led the ‘Roos to a 19-6 overall mark, a 12-4 conference record, and the No. 1 seed from the SCAC Western Division in the confer- ence tournament. Since Wecker took over the Austin College program in 2007-08, the program has been on a steady climb. After posting a 9-17 mark his first season, the ‘Roos posted a 13-13 mark in 2008-09 and the 2009-10 squad equaled the school record for single-season wins with 19. In very tight balloting, Wecker received four votes for Coach of the Year followed by Pat Cunningham of Trinity University with three votes. Greg Mason of Centre and Mitch Cole of Birmingham-Southern received two votes each while Bill Fenlon of DePauw University received the remaining vote. Galow was the only first-year player in the conference to average double digit points (10.2 points per game), and also added 3.2 assists (eighth in the SCAC) and 3.4 rebounds per game. He was second in the SCAC in free-throw percentage (86.6 percent) and also in the top five in minutes played, the only freshman ranked in top five. Galow led the Lynx in scoring on five separate occasions. Jonus was one of the SCAC’s best three-point shooters all season – finishing third in the league in three-point field goal percentage (41.0 percent) and fourth in three-pointers made per game (2.7). He was Birmingham-Southern’s second-leading scorer at 11.5 points per contest. Jonus, who played the final eight games of the season with a torn PCL ligament, posted his numbers while playing only 18.9 minutes per game. Centre’s Lloyd ranked 34th in the nation in blocked shots per game (2.0 – second in the SCAC) and 25th in rebounds per game with 9.7 – which led the SCAC. The Colo- nels ranked fourth nationally in scoring defense and sixth in field goal percentage defense nationally and Lloyd plays a big role in those rankings. He was the team’s leading rebounder or tied for the team-high in 16 of Centre’s 23 games this season.

41 2010-11 Hendrix Men’s Basketball Media Guide www.HendrixWarriors.com 42 athletic facilities hendrix athletic facilities ranked 13th in nation Hendrix College has always been considered one of the country’s best institutions for undergraduate education, however, according to the Warriors’ three- year-old athletic facilities ranks among the best in the nation.

The Princeton Review recently praised Hendrix College for its new Wellness and Athletic Center, Bob Courtway Pool and four outdoor playing fields by ranking it 13th in the country among all 2,500 four-year colleges. That includes all NCAA Division I, II and III schools.

Hendrix joined (Crawfordsville, Ind.) and (Middlebury, Vt.) as the only other NCAA Division III schools to make the Top 20 list. Hendrix was also the only Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) school on the list.

The Warriors finished construction of their new athletic facilities in August of 2007. The new buildings and playing fields replaced the 46-year-old Grove Gymnasium. Hendrix has also recently finished construction of the new Student Life and Technology Center, which has been erected on the west side of Harkrider where Grove Gymnasium formerly sat.

“Our new athletic facilities have helped us, along with the great work of our coaching staff, to increase the number of student-athletes participating in our 19 sports from about 180 a few years ago to over 350 this year,” said Athletics Director Danny Powell.

The SCAC has given Hendrix the opportunity to show off its new state-of-the-art facili- ties by appointing the school as host of the 2008 and 2009 SCAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships, 2009 SCAC Championships, 2010 SCAC Softball Championships and 2010 SCAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

The SCAC has chosen Hendrix as a host school for its conference championships because of the central location in the conference, ability to run on-campus tournaments and the abundant hotels and restaurants Conway has to offer. (Front view of the Wellness and Athletic Center)

One of the greatest aspects of Hendrix Athletics is the affordable admission to its 19 sporting event’s home games throughout the year, including SCAC Championships. Fans can come out and enjoy all the fun and excitement of college athletics for the best price of all, FREE.

In its profile on Hendrix (pages 280-281), The Princeton Review praises the college for its involved student body and accepting atmosphere. Hendrix students are quoted exten- sively throughout the review, discussing everything from the “phenomenal [financial] aid that would be ridiculous to turn down” to the “awesome theme parties”. A political science major noted that “one of Hendrix’s selling points is the personal relationships that students build with their professors,” while another student credited professors for being “courageously friendly.”

The Princeton Review’s 62 ranking lists in The Best 371 Colleges are entirely based on its survey of 122,000 students (about 325 per campus on average) attending the col- leges in the book. The 80-question survey asks students to rate their schools on several topics and report on their campus experiences. Topics range from student assessments of their professors, administrators, financial aid, and campus food.

Other ranking lists are based on student reports about their student body’s political leanings, race/class relations, gay community acceptance, and other aspects of campus life. A college’s appearance on a ranking list is entirely the result of a high consensus among its surveyed students about a topic compared with that of students at other schools answering the same survey question(s) on the ranking list topic.
