SUWANEE, Ga. – There is a familiar feeling heading into the 2008 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference soccer season. Trinity University finished second in the nation a year ago and has now won six straight SCAC titles. The Tigers will certainly be the favorite headed into this season however there is a lot of excitement around the campuses of the SCAC.

This year the SCAC will look to continue the success which has been building each season following the league’s expansion to 10 schools in 1998. Over the past nine seasons, the conference standings have shown at least five teams with ten or more wins at season’s end. But even that sustained top-to-bottom excellence has not resulted in a bevy of tournament bids for the membership. In fact, the league has not had more than one representative in the NCAA tournament over the last seven years.

One glaring thing about the league this year will be its youth. Over 120 new faces will join teams and play in the SCAC for the first time in their careers. Last season saw eight graduating seniors on the All-SCAC first team – the largest number of seniors ever represented on the team – since the SCAC reorganized in 1991. With all the young talent and key veterans, the league will be as competitive as ever and promises to shine in the national spotlight for yet another year.

Paul McGinlay, the 2007 SCAC Co-Coach-of-the-Year, begins his 18th season as the head coach of Trinity University. With his Tigers coming off a second national championship game appearance in just five years and preseason ranked second in the nation, expectations are once again high in San Antonio. Trinity will have its work cut out with the loss of ten seniors which left with a career record of 83-4-2. Senior captain Tyrone Petrakis and Patrick Floeck will lead the team this year. Petrakis, a two time All-American, was fifth in the league last year with ten goals – five of which were game-winners (second in the SCAC). Floeck, the 2007 SCAC Offensive-Player-of-the-Year, comes off a junior campaign that saw him find the back of the net nineteen times to lead the league. Trinity was ranked seventh in the nation in scoring last year and will look to continue that trend once again. Finding a replacement for first team All-SCAC goalkeeper David Steinberg will be important for a team that led the league in shutouts (13) in 2007. Adding more young talent to a veteran group with so many accolades already achieved, Trinity will be poised to make a run at the national title once again.

For the second straight year Southwestern finished second in the SCAC and just short of a bid to the NCAA tournament. Don Gregory, now in his tenth season, was the 2007 SCAC Co-Coach-of-the-Year and led last year’s team to the most wins achieved by the program since 2003. Eight seniors return this season, headlined by captains Kevin Jordan and Preston Hollis. Defensively the Pirates will look to build off its success from a year ago. Nine shutouts while allowing less than a goal a game was good enough for second in the conference. A solid core of seniors combined with an infusion of young talent should have this bunch of Pirates poised for an elusive berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Centre is coming off a year that saw the most wins in the program since 2000 and the most wins in a single season for head coach Jeb Burch in Danville, . The Colonels will look to make it twenty straight winning seasons in 2008, but will have to work hard after the loss of eleven seniors from last years 14-4-1 squad. Seniors Adam Boyer and Chris Bauman will lead the Colonels as they welcome thirteen new faces this season. Boyer was named to the first team All-SCAC last year and promises to be a leader on the field for Coach Burch. Bauman lead Centre last year in assists with seven – good enough for fourth in the league. One key item that will have to be addressed will be the replacement of goalkeeper Chris Creger, who finished second in the league with six shutouts as a senior.

A new chapter will begin this season at DePauw University as Brad Hauter will take over as head coach – following legendary coach Page Cotton who retired after 39 years on the sidelines. Coach Hauter returns to his alma mater and will have a good core of talent to work with. The Tigers twelve wins last season is the most since the 2002 season and the program has now won ten plus games over the past three years. DePauw returns thirteen letter winners including five starters. Leading the team will be senior Mike Harris, who was the team’s leading scorer and the league’s Newcomer-of-the-Year after coming into the program as a transfer last season. Senior Adam Davis, who poured in eight goals during his junior campaign, will also provide leadership on the field. Coach Hauter will have his work cut out on the defensive end, as he will have to replace goalkeeper John Fenley, who led a defense that only allowed just nineteen goals all of last year.

Horst Richardson returns for his 43rd season and second in the SCAC as the head coach of . The Tigers had a very impressive first-year campaign in the SCAC but finished the season not feeling satisfied as they just missed out on a bid to the NCAA Tournament. With twenty-four letter winners, seven starters and eighteen new faces joining the team there will be a lot of talent at the base of Pikes Peak this season. Headlining the Tigers will be senior Logan Boccard, who was named to the First Team All- SCAC last year and led the team in points with 20. Concern may come from having to find replacements for two All-SCAC performers from a year – Matt Samson and goalkeeper David Khuen. With nine shutouts, Khuen finished atop the league in that category.

The winningest coach in school history, Andy Marcinko returns for his 18th season at Rhodes. The Lynx will return sixteen players and welcome eleven new faces to Memphis this year. Patrick Deveau returns as one of the leaders this year. Deveau was named to the All-SCAC third team a year ago and will play a key role in anchoring the midfield for the Lynx. Finishing at .500, last season was an improvement for Rhodes, however Coach Marcinko and the Lynx will look to get back into the top four of the conference for the first time since 2004.

There is a sense of excitement in Jackson, this season as Millsaps returns nine starters from a team that won more games in conference play than any other Majors’ team since 1999. Coach Lee Johnson enters his sixth year at the helm and invites eight newcomers to the program this year. The Majors offensively should improve this year as they return all four of their top scorers from a year ago. Coach Johnson will have to find an answer early on for replacing four year starter in goal – Jake Milner. Expectations may be as high as ever heading into the ’08 season for Millsaps and the four seniors on this year’s squad want to go out on a high note.

After three straight seasons of eleven plus wins, Coach Jon Akin will look to turn a team around that struggled to only five wins a year ago. The Petrels return six starters led by co-capitans Michael Muller and Brett Wooten. With seven assist last year, Muller finished fourth in the conference and needs thirteen this year to break the Oglethorpe career record. Oglethorpe will be a fairly young team this year adding thirteen new faces after the graduation of the winningest class in Oglethorpe history. Junior Danner Marsden, a two time All-SCAC selection, returns as the team’s leading goal scorer. Marsden will have a lot of weight on his shoulders for an offense that was down last year after being ranked eighth nationally in 2006.

This season will mark the 40th anniversary of soccer on the Mountain at The University of the South- Sewanee. Head Coach David Poggi returns for his second season and will have work to do as the Tigers graduated six seniors and a wealth of leadership from last year’s team. Like most teams in the SCAC, this year’s edition of the Tigers will be fairly young with the addition of twelve new faces. Leadership will have to come from senior captains Brad Willis and Taylor Triplett. Coach Poggi and the Tigers will be looking for their first winning season since 2004.

Austin College will begin its third year of SCAC play in 2008. Coach Mark Hudson, in his second season with the ‘Roos, is excited about what lies ahead for his team. Austin returns fifteen players who will be joined by sixteen fresh faces creating a pool of talent in Sherman, Texas. Hudson will relay on seniors Tommy Haney and Miles Vaughn to provide leadership for his team. Vaughn was named All-SCAC back in 2006.

A new leaf has been turned over in Conway, and it begins with new head Coach Doug Mello. Hendrix returns eight players – five of which started a year ago. But it is the twenty-two incoming freshmen that have Coach Mello really excited. The Warriors are young with no seniors on this year’s squad so leadership will have to come from the junior class – led by Will Brown, Braden Jones, Kent Combs, Tom Robins and Thatcher Crawford. With a wealth of new talent and the coaching experience of Doug Mello the Warriors are looking for their first winning season since 1993.

In his 26th season as the head coach of Birmingham-Southern, Preston Goldfarb may have his toughest coaching challenge yet. The loss of ten starters from a year ago and only five upperclassmen returning, the Panthers will be the youngest they have been in Goldfarb’s career. The lone returning starter is sophomore defender Andrew Stein. Birmingham-Southern will have plenty of cleats to fill – especially on the offensive end – as the Panthers lost twenty-seven of its thirty goals from a year ago due to graduation.

2008 Preview Austin College Kangaroos

The Austin College men’s soccer team will be looking to improve on their 2007 campaign as Mark Hudson enters his second year as the program’s head coach. The Kangaroos will feature a significant youth movement with 16 new faces joining the team, many of whom could see immediate playing time this season.

Along with the talented recruiting class, Hudson’s squad returns 15 players from last year’s team including seniors Tommy Haney and Miles Vaughn, both of whom Hudson will be counting on heavily in 2008. “Tommy and Miles have had a great offseason,” said Hudson. “They have really become the foundation for this team. They are quality players that will bring much needed leadership to the field.” Also returning is talented forward Alex Dawson, who enters the year as the team’s top scoring threat. Dawson enters the year with 12 career goals and was an All-Conference performer during his freshman season in 2006. “Alex has grasped what is expected of him and I expect his numbers to improve significantly from last fall,” said Hudson. “He is stronger and mentally tougher than he was just a year ago.”

Hudson will be relying on several of his newcomers to be able to step in and make an early impact, including midfielder Luis Castillo, defender Landon Bowersock, and goalkeeper Grant Gosselin. In addition to those three, Hudson said that he expects first year players Kyle Fitzpatrick, Johnny Lara, and Chris Stein to push for playing time. “Luis was a great catch for us,” said Hudson. “I expect him to have an impact right away. He is exceptional on the ball and reads the field very well. Chris has been successful on every level he has competed, and I expect college to be no different. He is a dynamic player on and off the ball that teams will have a tough time defending.” Hudson also had high praise for Gosselin, who he believes will push returning keepers Nate Noel and Matt Dickinson all throughout the fall. Over the summer Gosselin manned the net as his club team took a third place finish at the US Youth Club National Championships. “Grant is an exceptional goalkeeper that has the size and ability to play right away,” said Hudson. “It is going to be fun to watch the competition play out.”

Hudson will need his young players to acclimate to the college game early on, as he’ll be forced to replace several starters from last years team that were lost to graduation. Overall though, Hudson appears to have the program on an upswing with the influx of talent and the implementation of his system in his second season at the helm. “I’m excited about this fall,” said Hudson. “The upperclassmen have finally grasped what is expected of them on and off the field. They have had a tremendous offseason. Add to this what I feel is an exceptional group of young players, and I think people are going to see a completely different mentality than what we had last year, and I think that will show in our results.”

2008 Preview Birmingham-Southern College Panthers

Beginning his 26th season directing the Birmingham-Southern Men’s Soccer program, Preston Goldfarb calls the 2008 team one of the youngest in the program’s history. Eight freshmen, eight sophomores, one junior and four seniors make up the 21-man roster.

“Our team is going to be very inexperienced and young,” said Goldfarb. “We lost 10 starters from last year’s team leaving defender Andrew Stein as our only returning starter. Our midfield will be the most inexperienced of all the positions. Of the eight incoming freshman, all eight could start. Whether they will or not I don’t know but at some point during the season you will probably see all eight in the lineup. When you have 12 seniors and nine of them start, you have got some real issues with youth. This will be one of the most challenging season in our history because of so much inexperience.”

After losing 27 of its 30 goals scored last season due to graduation, the Panthers’ offense was dealt another blow just before preseason when senior striker Robert Geil was lost for the season due to an illness that will prohibit him from playing soccer for a minimum of 12 months. Geil scored three goals with one assist, starting in 19 games in 2007.

With the striker job wide open, returnees Joe Burrage and Andrew Burkhardt along with newcomers Daniel Jackson, Tyler Evans and Garner Shivers will battle to become the starters in the preseason. Burrage and Burkhardt saw action in a combined seven games playing behind leading scorer Gino Cozzolino. Jackson comes to BSC from Friendswood High School in Friendswood, Texas, where he scored 31 goals and 18 assists as a senior while Evans tallied 37 goals his senior year at Arnold High School in Panama City Beach, Fla. Shivers scored 22 goals and had 10 assists last season at Oxford High School in Oxford, Miss.

Returning midfielders include Stephen Rumble, Scott Shelton, Carter McClean, Andrew Shelton, and Timothy Tincher. Rumble and McLean saw action in 11 games while Scott Shelton played in 10 games. Andrew Shelton played in six games and Tincher saw action in seven.

Newcomers Brice Hunt, Sean Head, Logan Jones and Drew Hemeter are projected to contribute in the midfield immediately. Hunt, who is out of West Plains High School in West Plains, Mo., scored 13 goals with four assists his senior year. Head is another product of Friendswood High School, scoring 33 goals with 18 assists during his career. Jones was a 2008 All-State selection for Madison Central High School in Madison, Miss., and Hemeter helped Farragut High School in Knoxville, Tenn., to the 2007 state championship.

Nick Pihakis and Ivy Duggan and freshman Michael Alfano join Stein in the defense. Pihakis moves from the midfield after playing in 10 games with three starts and Duggan played in six contests as a reserve. Alfano played at Decatur High School in Decatur, Ala., and helped the Birmingham United Soccer Association 90 Select team to a 2007 club state championship.

Hal Halbert is expected to replace the graduated Joe Nasco in goal. Halbert made three starts early in the 2007 season for an injured Nasco and finished the year playing in nine games with 25 saves. Sophomores Alan Eckler and Shachar Hovan will play key reserve roles. “Hal has come a long way in goal,” said Goldfarb. “He is getting more vocal and is becoming more aggressive. He got some playing time last year because of Nasco’s injuries but he didn’t play his first two years so this is a real learning curve for him at this level too. Hal is a natural leader and he is aggressive and tough. Shachar Hovan and Alan Eckler are both very capable backups.”

The 2008 schedule features four round-robin style tournaments to open the season. BSC will host three of the four tournaments starting with the BSC Labor Day Classic, on August 29-31, the BSC Invitational, on September 12-14, and the BSC Armed Forces Classic, on September 19-21. The Panthers will play Westminster and Washington University in the Labor Day Classic and Mississippi College and Spring Hill in the BSC Invitational before hosting Army and Navy in the BSC Armed Forces Classic. BSC takes on Johns Hopkins and the University of the Ozarks in the Kyle Rote, Jr., Invitational, on September 5-7 in Sewanee Tenn.

Rounding out the 10 home games are SCAC foes Centre College, DePauw University, Millsaps College, Sewanee and Oglethorpe University. The road portion of the 2008 slate has the Panthers traveling to Colorado College, Austin College, Maryville College, Trinity University, Southwestern University, Rhodes College and Hendrix College.

2008 Preview Centre College Colonels

After seeing the graduation of 11 seniors who shared an overall class record of 50-16-6, the 2008 Centre College men’s soccer team will look to extend its consecutive winning season streak to 20 as the Colonels have reloaded with an incoming class of 11 freshmen and two transfers.

The Colonels, which finished the 2007 campaign with a 14-4-1 record, will be paced by two seniors, Adam Boyer (Louisville, Ky.) and Chris Baumann (Louisville, Ky.). The two former National Club Champions are joined by two other seniors in Eric Brown (Memphis, Tenn.) and Jeff Kedrowski (Chattanooga, Tenn.) to create the core of the 2008 squad.

The graduation of goalkeeper Chris Creger will give way for J.C. Spalding (Bardstown, Ky.) and Aaron Arndt (Madisonville, Ky.) to compete for the starting position in goal. Arndt returns after a very successful stint at the PDL level with the Cincinnati Kings. The heart of the defense will be led by juniors James Kusak (Louisville, Ky.), Andy Burke (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Chris Allen (Louisville, Ky.), along with sophomore Brad Fansher (Chicago, Ill.). Sophomore transfer Peter Strand (Berea, Ky.) also figures to be a factor for playing time with this back four.

The Colonels see 13 new faces this fall, led by freshman Austin Hall (Indianapolis, Ind.), The Indianapolis Star Player of the Year. Hall and fellow freshman Matt Skaff (Radcliff, Ky.) will join junior Richard Hinton (Ft. Wayne, Ind.) to create an impressive new strike force for the Colonels. Brian Fay (New York, N.Y.), a former club national champion, along with Cameron Bayse (Louisville, Ky.), Tony Distler (Louisville, Ky.), Aleister Cardwell (Louisville, Ky.) and transfer Patrick Garvey (Louisville, Ky.) will all factor into immediate playing time.

There are several unknowns with this year’s 2008 squad. Yet, the talent level and depth brings hope to a program that has kept pace with the top four teams each year in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Centre opens up with a pair games at the Glenn Hyundai Classic in Lexington, Ky. before returning home for the 19th Annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic. Matches with LeTourneau University and Illinois Wesleyan University as part of the Bob Allen Nissan Classic will hopefully create a rhythm necessary for the trip to Ohio with games at Heidelberg University and .

The Colonels are fortunate to host seven conference matches this year, while playing only four on the road. Having gone 7-3 in SCAC play last year, this should benefit Centre as two of those three losses came on the road. For the second straight year, the Colonels will play Austin College, coached by former Centre assistant Mark Hudson as part of the Komen Game II, a charity event for the fight against Breast Cancer. Centre will then head to Colorado College, which handed the Colonels one of their three SCAC defeats in 2007. The 2008 regular season will wrap up with home stands against the other two conference teams that defeated Centre in 2007. Trinity University will be in Danville, Ky. Friday, Nov. 7 followed by the regular-season finale against Southwestern University Sunday, Nov. 9.

2008 Preview

The Colorado College men’s soccer team made a successful debut in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in 2007, finishing in a three-way tie for third place with a 7-2-1 record. Successful, yes. Satisfying, no. A disappointing loss in the final game of the season cost the Tigers sole possession of second place and a possible berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs. With 24 letterwinners and seven starters back, including senior captain Ben Beadle-Ryby, co-captain Jimmer Comerford and junior captain Trevor Cobb, this year’s squad is prepared to use last season’s finish as motivation to achieve its lofty goals in 2008.

But instead of focusing on the conference championship and a return to the NCAA playoffs at the beginning of the schedule, head coach Horst Richardson plans to break the season – as well as each game – into much smaller segments. “It’s a real psychological mistake to set ambitious goals for a conference title and be looking toward the end of the season at the beginning of the season,” said Richardson, now in his 43rd campaign at CC. “What we’re going to do is divide the season into various parts and work our way through them. “My instruction to the players will be to concentrate on training, concentrate on playing a minute at a time, a half at a time, a game at a time. Concentrate on your performance. Don’t worry about the outcome or the end of the season at the beginning of the season.”

This year’s training camp may turn out to be one of the most interesting segments of the season. In addition to the veterans, the Tigers could have as many as 18 newcomers attempting to earn one of 25 coveted spots on the roster. “We’re excited that there are some potentially gifted players in this year’s freshman class,” Richardson said. “There is the potential of more freshman starters, and certainly among the top 18, than ever before, which puts a lot of pressure on the rest of these guys.” The coaching staff isn’t immune from the pressure, either, as the final roster of 25 will need to be trimmed from 43 players at the start of camp. While some veterans could be cut to make room for the talented newcomers, others might need to change positions. “It will be a difficult task to make sure we come up with the right number and combination of players,” Richardson said.

One of the primary goals will be to increase offensive production. The Tigers welcome back six of their top nine point producers from last season, including senior Logan Boccard and Cobb, who led the team with 20 points apiece. But other than those two, only junior Jordan Reese was able to reach double-figure points with 11. Fortunately, CC does have several players with the potential to significantly increase their scoring output. Seniors Berk Korustan, Mike Richardson, Wes Rikkers and Warren Takashima, along with juniors Chris Ellis and David Van Sicklen, all have the skills to convert their chances as well as set up their teammates. Keeping everyone healthy and putting players in the right position should help increase the offensive production. A renewed emphasis on set plays also could have a dramatic effect on scoring ability. “We improved a little bit last year on corner kicks,” Richardson said. “I’ve let it be known that we’re looking for specialists. Many of the players are educating their feet on free kicks, penalty kicks, corner kicks, and even throw-ins.” While there is no denying the individual talent on this year’s roster, scoring opportunities will ultimately go to the players who perform best as a team. “It’s not necessarily going to be the best 11 players who are on the field,” Richardson said. “It will be the 11 players who play best together. All I can say is that I’m really excited because of the options that we will have.”

The defensive alignment, as well as who will fill those positions, will take shape during preseason training. The losses of Dave Khuen, Matt Samson and Jason Steiert to graduation, along with the possibility of others moving forward to bolster the offense, will lead to opportunities for playing time at the defensive end. One priority will be identifying a No. 1 goalkeeper. Joey Wykowski posted a 4-1 record with a 0.93 goals-against average as a sophomore two years ago, but missed all of last season with an ankle injury. Andy McGhie played a backup role in 2007, finishing the season with a 2-2 record and a 1.93 goals against average as a freshman. “The biggest question mark will be who will tend goal for us this year,” Richardson said. “Joey Wykowski was injured last year and we hope that he’ll be ready to compete. Andy McGhie, who played some last year, and Brian Engle also will be in the mix. We also have a new keeper in Colin Prather, who’s got some real credentials.”

For the first time since 1999, the Tigers will begin their season on the road when they take on St. Olaf College on Aug. 29. The following weekend, CC plays host to Cal Tech and MIT in the 10th Annual Bill Boddington Memorial Tournament. “That's a coast-to-coast tournament featuring three of the finest academic schools in the country,” Richardson said. “Everyone has heard of MIT and Cal Tech.” Conference play begins on Sept. 26 when Birmingham-Southern College and Millsaps College visit Stewart Field. The following weekend, the Tigers will make the first of three conference road trips when they travel to Texas to face the only two teams which finished ahead of CC last year – Trinity University and Southwestern College.

There is a fine line between accomplishing goals and having a successful season, but Richardson is confident this year's team will do whatever it takes to reach its full potential. “This team should be capable of competing for the conference title,” he said. “If they are willing to make the necessary sacrifices for a relatively short period of time, we will have a very successful 2008 season. With the leadership we have on the team, we should be able to do that.”

2008 Preview DePauw University Tigers

First-year head coach Brad Hauter brings a new face and a new system to the DePauw men’s soccer program after Page Cotton wrapped up an outstanding 39-year career with his retirement last season.

The Tigers return 13 lettermen and five starters from last year’s 12-5-1 team which finished in a third-place tie in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Senior Mike Harris, the SCAC Newcomer of the Year in 2007 after transferring to DePauw, is the top returning scorer from last year. An SCAC second team selection, Harris scored seven goals and shared the team lead with five assists. Senior Adam Davis also scored seven goals a year ago.

Other returning starters include senior Jake Dodds and juniors Andrew Parsons and Beau Sorg. The Tigers allowed just 19 goals last season, but will need to find a new goalkeeper and a replacement for an all-conference defender.

Hauter, a DePauw Athletic Hall of Famer, is no stranger to the soccer program as the 1987 graduate served as the Tigers’ starting goalkeeper all four years.

He comes to DePauw with 11 years of men’s head coaching experience including the last five as the men’s coach at Rose-Hulman. Hauter also served double duty as the Engineers’ women’s coach for the last seven years and earned Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors in both last year.

2008 Preview Hendrix College Warriors

The Hendrix College men’s soccer team has adopted a new motto ‘Ex Unitate Vires,’ which stands for ‘Strength Through Unity. The Warriors begin a new era in men’s soccer under first-year head coach Doug Mello. Hendrix welcomes back eight returners and 22 newcomers to the 2008 squad.

Mello brings a 377-188-32 overall coaching record as a men’s coach to Hendrix and will build on a group of talented returners and eager newcomers for a successful 2008 season. Mello joins the Warriors after serving as the head men’s and women’s soccer coach for 18 years at in Decorah, Iowa. During his time with the Norse, his men’s team won six conference titles, made five NCAA Division III National Tournament appearances and tallied a 240- 119-13 overall record. Mello holds the NCAA Division III record for consecutive conference wins with 42.

Hendrix returns seven lettermen from the 2007 stretch, including five starters. The Warriors will have to look to their junior class for veteran experience as the team will not feature any seniors this season. Will Brown, Braden Jones, Kent Coombs, Tom Robins and Thatcher Crawford each started in all 17 games last year. We will have a corral of young and talented shot blockers who will all be competing for playing time to begin the season,” Mello commented.

The Warriors will have five players vying for the starting goalkeeper position as the team lost last season’s starter Kyle Beene to graduation. Junior Jon Moore is the only returning keeper, while first years Adam Legg, Bill Hyatt, Matt Long and Nick Marks will all compete for playing time.

This year’s 22 newcomers will include 11 midfielders, four forwards and four defenders. “All of these recruits are top-level players,” said Mello. “What makes them special is that they are from winning programs that will help us establish a tradition of soccer excellence at Hendrix College.”

2008 Preview Millsaps College Majors

After one of the more successful men’s soccer seasons in recent years, sixth- year head coach Lee Johnson will work with 9 of 11 returning starters in addition to eight newcomers in hopes of taking another step forward in the conference standings.

A 5-12 overall record and 3-7 mark (t-seventh) in SCAC play was Millsaps’ best finish since 2005, while the three wins in league play were a first since 1999. Over the course of the season, the Majors landed their first SCAC Player of the Week selection (Milner, twice) since the 1994 season and were four, 1- goal losses away from a .500 season.

Millsaps lost four seniors from last year’s squad, two of which made significant contributions over their four years. Goalkeeper Jake Milner, who started nearly every game in net for the Majors since his freshman season, is gone after ranking in the top of the SCAC in saves the past two seasons and racking up a total of 325 for his career. Heath Smith, a two-time all-conference selection on defense, earned the start in 64 games during his time at Millsaps and was team captain his final two years.

Returning for the Majors in 2008 are four seniors in Todd Schneck, Luke Campbell, Anthony Amaya and Domenick DiPaolo, on top of 13 letterwinners. Schneck and Amaya combined for 16 points (five goals, six assists) on the offensive attack, while Campbell held serve on the defensive backline. DiPaolo will be fighting for a starting spot between the posts with a pair of incoming freshmen after a 1-year hiatus and 10 months of service in Iraq.

Millsaps also welcomes back its top four scorers in juniors Brandon Mong, Aaron Hyatt, Andres Colocho and Colin Thompson in addition to 3 of 4 returners on the defensive backline.

The Majors ranked near the bottom of the conference in a handful of statistical categories, including ranking 10th in goals scored with 25 while giving up 58. “We must improve getting quality shots on target,” Johnson said. “And we must also become more organized on the defensive third.”

The 2008 slate features 10 home games and 10 away contests, with the season kicking off on Aug. 30 at the Rhodes College Classic with Fontbonne University. The SCAC schedule kicks off on Sept. 26 with Austin College on the road – one of seven road conference games – and ends on Nov. 9 at Rhodes College. The home schedule is highlighted by a four-game homestand from Sept. 5-14, including three games in four days.

2008 Preview Oglethorpe University Stormy Petrels

The Oglethorpe University men’s soccer team looks to rebound after a disappointing 2007 season for their standards that saw them compile an overall record of 5-12 (4-7).

The team returns six starters off of last year’s squad including midfield seniors and co-captains Michael Muller (Walton HS, NASA) and Brett Wooten (NASA, Cobb Christian). Left back Daniel Brown of Palmer, Alaska and GK Michael Hadjisimos (Lakeside DeKalb HS) will anchor the defense for a Petrel team that will sorely miss the presence of graduated All-Conference performer David Mueller. The three most attacking players on the Petrel’s roster, Bryan Burnick (Mountain Brook HS and BUSA), Italo Cardosa (NASA and Riverwood HS) and leading goal scorer Danner Marsden (Pace Academy, TYSA) will spearhead the offensive attack.

After feverish recruiting efforts, head coach Jon Akin has added thirteen new players to the roster after losing four seniors from last year’s team. Senior transfer Scott Devault highlights the recruiting class after transferring to Oglethorpe from Division I Georgia Southern University. “This incoming freshmen class is the largest and strongest in my tenure at Oglethorpe,” said coach Akin. The class includes a bevy of players expected to compete for starting positions including Randy Spoon (Harrison HS and Cobb FC) Nathan Post, (Parkview HS and G.S.A), Jovan Phillips (PA Classics), Greyson Surges (Richmond Hill HS and CGSA), Aaron Walker (Etowah HS, NASA) Harrison McConnell (Concorde Fire, Chamblee HS) and GK Jon Beaver (Knoxville, TN).

Other newcomers Caio Lima (A.I.S.), Sean Lovett (Norcross, Chamblee HS), Isaac Baron (The Ashville School), Alex Van Zandt (Baton Rouge, LA), Balbir Khalsa (Vardar Soccer Club), Jimmy Harter and Will Spooner (Dunwoody HS) should all see some quality minutes over the course of the season.

Coach Akin enters his sixth season as head coach for Oglethorpe carrying an all- time record of 45-41-3 and a “deuces wild” SCAC record of 22-22-2.

2008 Preview Rhodes College Lynx

Lost to graduation were All-SCAC midfielder Chase LaFont, goalkeeper Alex Mathis, midfielders Chris Chugden and Mike Hadler and defender Arian Moshref.

The Lynx return 16 players from the team that finished 10-8-1, 5-4-1 in SCAC play for 6th place in 2007. The returning squad includes past All-SCAC selections Patrick Deveau, a senior midfielder and captain from Atlanta Ga, Alex Margolin, senior goalkeeper from Austin TX, and junior forward Logan Eberly of Evansville IN.

A strong incoming class of 11 freshmen will help continue Rhodes’ push to getting back into the top four of the SCAC.

2008 Preview Sewanee – University of the South Tigers

The 2008 season promises to be a new beginning for Sewanee Soccer. Marking the 40th anniversary of Tiger Soccer will be the opening of the Kyle Rote Jr. Facility (named after for All-American Kyle Rote, Jr. ’72) and the official stadium dedication of the Puett Pitt. In addition, renewed competition with top 20 non-conference foes Washington University, Wesminster, Johns Hopkins, and Emory will remind alumni and friends of seasons past.

With the departure of graduated seniors, Tab Wood (7g, 2a, 16pts), Robbie Wynne (11g, 8a, 30pts), Jake Dougher, Kyle Lester, John Diefenderfer and goalkeeper Kevin Karpay the Tigers will have big shoes to fill. “That group of seniors not only were responsible for the majority of our scoring (last year), but also served a major leadership role during last season’s coaching transition,” said head coach David Poggi.

While the task at hand might appear daunting “this is exactly what we want,” says Poggi. “When putting together this years non-conference schedule I had two choices: play opponents who (on paper) appear easier to beat or play opponents who would better prepare us for conference play. I feel the lessons learned against tougher opponents are longer lasting and better to build on. I am excited for this challenge and so is the team.

In 2008 – unlike last season - SCAC conference play begins almost a month earlier than it did a year ago. The Tigers open league play and will get their first test on the road with DePauw and Centre (9/19 and 9/21). Hendrix (9/26), Rhodes (9/28) and Oglethorpe (10/4) follow that, back “on the Mountain”. Trips to Southwestern and Trinity (10/10 and 10/12) and Birmingham Southern and Millsaps (10/31 and 11/2) finish off the rest of the away Tiger SCAC schedule.

This years Homecoming game will be a Friday night (7:30pm) encounter with regional power and nationally ranked Emory. The team will close out its regular season at home against visiting Colorado College (11/7) and Austin College (11/9).

Several familiar faces and a larger group of new ones will be given the opportunity to navigate this new beginning for the Tigers. Four of the seniors who will have a significant role play predominately in the backfield. Goalkeeper Johnny Nalley (Gainsville, Ga.) will start the season as the #1. “Johnny has worked hard for this opportunity and has earned the spot. He showed last season that he has the tools to be a top keeper at this level,” added Poggi. Returning Captains, Brad Wills (Atlanta) and Taylor Triplett (Jackson, Miss.) will anchor a backline with the return of Ben Swann (Asheville, N.C.) who missed the entire 2007 campaign (due to injury).

The junior class is made up of midfielders Patrick Johnson (Cleveland, Tenn.) and Matt OBrien (Lawrenceville, Ga.), defender Chris Tipler (Birmingham, Ala.) and forward Henry Kiser from Marietta, Ga. All four saw significant playing time last year and will be called upon immediately in 2008.

The sophomore and freshman class make up the majority of this year’s roster. Jackson Gannaway (Collierville, Tenn.) and defenders Matt Engle (Chambersburg, Pa.) and Jett Fisher (Sewanee) were starters in their first season and have larger roles this season. Like last year, several of this year’s freshmen class will fill important roles and see playing time. While 12 new faces will be wearing the “purple and white” for the first time, Coach Poggi feels confident they will be able to help fill the shoes of last years departed seniors. “Defenders Mark Meyer (Roanoke, Va.) and Walt Doty (Knoxville) can both step in immediately into our back-line and are both versatile enough to help out in the midfield if need be. Midfielders Stuart Maxey (Roanoke, Va.) and Alec Peter (Denver) will give us an added dimension on both sides of the ball. Maxey is a great playmaker and Peter is a strong ball winner. Finally in attack, Matt Lightfoot (Germantown, Tenn.) and Kai Sanders (Notts, England) will be both asked to help us create and score goals in their first year,” says Poggi.

“But you know, regardless of what I say now a lot of things happen in a season. Anyone and everyone on our roster has the potential to contribute to the success of this team and will undoubtedly be given the opportunity”. “That’s why its such an exciting time to become part of Sewanee Soccer,” he added.

When a player puts on the Sewanee shirt they have to play with a certain kind of spirit and that is what we must create,” concluded Poggi. “My ambition is to arrive at the top. We have to work to change the mentality of the past few years. I believe we can do that but the players must also believe. We have a short time to come together as one group. We must work hard and suffer together. It is very important we help everyone. Without the group, it’s impossible to win.”

2008 Preview Southwestern University Pirates

Southwestern University Men's Pirates Soccer will begin practices Saturday, August 16th. Over 40 players are expected the first day to begin the 2008 season.

Senior captains Kevin Jordan (Austin), Preston Hollis (Austin) and Kevin Jordan (San Antonio) will lead the squad. Five other seniors - Winston Pool (Austin), Josh Spencer (Huntsville), Phil Stehling (Houston), Ryan Tasin (Georgetown) and Suresh Thomas (Round Rock) - look to close out their four year SU career in good form.

In addition to the highly competitive SCAC matches, the highlight of the season will be an invitational tournament at Trinity in October. Three of the four teams are former national champions - Trinity, St Lawrence (NY) and Wheaton (IL).

The 2008 schedule also includes the highest number of Regional matches the Pirates have ever played in a season. 16 of the 19 regular season matches are against In-Region opponents.

2008 Preview Trinity University Tigers

The Trinity University Tigers came ever so close to reclaiming the NCAA Division III National Championship they had won in 2003. Trinity, led by Paul McGinlay, now in his 18th season at the Tigers’ helm, advanced to the NCAA Championship game for the second time. The field of competition was Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. With both teams battling through 110 minutes of scoreless play, the title game came down to penalty kicks. Middlebury (Vt.) edged the Tigers 4-3 in PKs to take home the championship.

The Tigers, who completed the season with a 23-1-0 record, still have that fire in their eyes as they begin their quest Aug. 29 against Mary Hardin-Baylor in Georgetown, Texas. “It was an experienced and successful team,” said coach McGinlay, elected as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America South Central Region Coach of the Year. “Our returning players got a taste of what it’s like to play for a national championship. That will be the force which drives us forward.”

The team to which coach McGinlay referred amassed a record of 83-4-2. A total of 10 seniors were on the 2007 squad. That total included All-America defenders Kyle Altman and Thomas Owens. Another key loss was goalkeeper David Steinberg. Trinity captured its 11th Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title – with a 10-0-0 record – and coach McGinlay was voted the SCAC Co-Coach of the Year. Altman was chosen as the SCAC Defensive Player of the Year. He was later drafted by the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer. After securing the conference automatic bid to the playoffs, Trinity, making its 11th NCAA postseason appearance, beat UT-Dallas, Principia (Ill.), Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Washington (Mo.) through the quarterfinals. In their third NCAA semifinals, the Tigers defeated Messiah (Pa.).

But the 2008 edition of the Tigers promises to produce some distinction of its own. Senior midfielder Tyrone Petrakis of Albuquerque, N.M. (Sandia Prep), was elected to the NSCAA All-America Second Team, as he was in 2006. Petrakis, a Tiger team captain, scored 10 goals – with five game-winners – along with garnering five assists. The Tiger offense was ranked No. 7 in the nation with 88 goals, for 3.67 per game. Patrick Floeck, a senior forward from Carrollton, Texas (Creekview), was named SCAC Offensive Player of the Year. Floeck, also chosen for the D3kicks.com All-Region First Team, scored 19 goals (six game-winners) and made three assists. Senior midfielder Noe Casanova of Kingwood, Texas (Kingwood), made the All-SCAC Second Team. Casanova produced seven goals (one game-winner) and 12 assists. Junior midfielder Joseph DeCosta of Dallas (Lake Highlands) scored four goals and accounted for three assists last season. Cameron Hogsett, a sophomore forward from McKinney, Texas (McKinney), had three goals (one game-winner) and three assists. Michael Robertson, a senior defender and team captain, made the NSCAA All-South Central Region First Team. He will anchor an always solid backfield, which last year was ranked No. 5 in the nation in goals-against average (24 games, 10 goals against, .41 per game). Joining Robertson in protecting the Tigers’ turf will be junior Chris Schardon of The Woodlands, Texas (The Woodlands); along with sophomore Patrick Cunagin of College Station, Texas (A&M Consolidated). Getting the nod at starting goalkeeper will be junior Patrick Johnson of Houston (Memorial). Johnson, in a reserve role last season, allowed two goals in 12 games and made eight saves. Returning seniors include: defender Edward Cartee of Oak Ridge, N.C. (IMG Academy); midfielder Andres Aceves of Albuquerque (La Cueva); and defender Michael Hicks of Austin, Texas (LBJ). Kelly Altman is in his second season as a Tigers assistant. He was a standout defender for the Tigers from 2001 to 2004.

A number of talented newcomers will continue the legacy of Tiger soccer. Among those is defender/midfielder Kyle Porter of Albuquerque (El Dorado), who earned all-state honors. Midfielder Aaron Olson of Mendota Heights, Minn. (St. Paul Academy/Summit School), was captain of the under-18 USA team at the Maccabi Games. Other promising newcomers include midfielders Josh Adams of Houston (Cy-Fair), Jordan Wade of Phoenix (Pinnacle) and Zack Garcia of Dallas (Lake Highlands). Adding to the backfield will be defender Nick Alexander of Overland Park, Kan. (Blue Valley NW). Trinity will have an international presence on the team, including a returnee from two years ago, junior defender Ralph Petang of Cameroon. First-year defender Lachlan Fogarty hails from Sydney, Australia, and forward Peter Philpott is from Great Britain.

The Tigers will play 12 home games during the 2008 campaign, beginning with Hardin-Simmons on Sept. 5. UT- Dallas comes to campus Sept. 7 and Texas Lutheran, from nearby Seguin, will be Trinity’s opponent Sept. 12. The Tigers return home Sept. 28 to take on Christopher Newport (Va.). Trinity’s home SCAC schedule kicks off Oct. 3 with Austin College and Oct. 5 with Colorado College. Trinity’s Alumni Weekend begins Oct. 10 with Oglethorpe and concludes Oct. 12 with the University of the South-Sewanee. Two former NCAA champions will meet the Tigers Oct. 17 and 18: St. Lawrence (N.Y.), the 1999 champion, and Wheaton (Ill.), the 1997 titlist, respectively. Wheaton received votes on the NSCAA top-25 final poll. Trinity wraps up its regular-season home schedule with two conference games. Birmingham-Southern visits Trinity Oct. 24 and Millsaps closes out the lineup Oct. 26.

When asked what the fans can expect to see when they watch the Tigers this season, coach McGinlay responded: “They can expect to see an attractive passing game. With Trinity’s characteristic strength in defending, we’ve made a great habit of playing well on both sides of the field.”
