MSOC: Keegan named scac offensive potw Hendrix College junior forward Duncan Keegan has been named the SCAC Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for matches played from Oct. 25 through Oct. 31. The Signal Mountain, Tenn. native gave his team a much needed boost over the weekend. Keegan stepped it up on Friday night as the league’s leading scorer, sophomore forward Connor Silvesrti, was required to sit out a match due to a red card in the Warriors’ previous contest. Keegan netted two goals in the Warriors 3-2 victory over Birmingham-Southern on Friday night and then added the opening goal in Hendrix’s 3-0 victory over Millsaps on Sunday. Keegan put Hendrix on top early Friday with a penalty kick in the 10th minute. He then netted his seventh goal of the season in the 23rd minute off a rebound from about eight yards out. Keegan scored his final goal of the weekend in the 13th minute against Millsaps. He beat the keeper in a one-on-one breakaway from 20 yards out. Junior forward Colin Thompson volleyed the ball over the top of the defense to send Keegan through, forcing the keeper to charge out of the box.

FH: stick it to cancer drive The ultimate “Stick it to Cancer” Challenge is under way and will last through the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Field Hockey Tournament in Greencastle, Ind., on November 5-7. All five SCAC field hockey teams have come together to see who can raise the most funds for cancer research! The teams are raising money now, and the winner will be announced during the SCAC Tournament. All proceeds benefit the National Foundation for Cancer Research (NFCR). Men’s Soccer Hendrix College earned its first SCAC weekend sweep of the season after a 3-2 victory over Birmingham-Southern on Friday night and then a 3-0 win over Millsaps on Sunday after- noon. The Warriors jumped from an 11th place ranking in last week’s SCAC standings to a tie for sixth with Rhodes in this week’s league standings. The Warriors now stand at 7-7-1 overall and 3-5-1 in the SCAC. The Hendrix College men’s soccer team scored just enough goals in the first half to outlast Birmingham-Southern on a cold night at Warrior Field. Warriors’ junior forward Duncan Keegan scored a pair of goals to lead the way. Keegan put Hendrix on top early with a penalty kick in the 10th minute. He then netted his seventh goal of the season in the 23rd minute off a rebound from about eight yards out. Sophomore midfielder Dylan Reed would score the Warriors’ final goal, his first of the season, in the 35th minute off an assistfrom junior midfielder Kevin Gregory. Reed hammered home a shot from about 12 yards out off a brilliant pass from Gregory. Warriors’ junior goalkeeper Adam Legg made six saves on the night. The Panthers split goalkeeping duties at the half as senior Shachar Hovan started the match and made three saves, while first year Alex Levinson finished the contest withfour saves. The Warriors sent its lone senior, Mac Barnes, out on top with a dominant win over Millsaps on Sunday. The Warriors’ earned their third conference win of the season and second shutout. Keegan recorded the opening goal when he beat the keeper on a one-on-one breakaway from 20 yards out. Keegan netted his eighth goal of the year off an assist from junior forward Colin Thompson. Sophomore defender Grant Womack scored his first goal of the season with a low shot to the opposite corner from five yards out in the 68th minute. Reed made his fourth assist of the campaign on the score. Thompson put the game well out of reach with his second goal of the season in the 82nd minute off a double-assistfrom sophomore midfielder Connor Silvestri and junior midfielder Taylor Davenport. Legg denied two shots in his fifth career shutout. Women’s Soccer Hendrix College picked up its first conference win of the season with a 2-1 overtime thriller against Millsaps on Sunday afternoon. Hendrix dropped a 3-0 contest to Birmingham- Southern on Friday night. The Warriors now stand at 3-11-1 overall and 1-7-1 in SCAC play, good for ninth place in league standings. Birmingham-Southern scored two goals in the first half and netted an insurance score just two minutes into the second half on Friday. Panthers’ junior forward Alicia Plotky scored two goals and made one assist to lead her team to their third conference win. Plotky scored the Panthers’ opening goal in the 34th minute off an assist from first year defender Amanda Bab- bin. Babbin sent a high corner kick to the far post and Plotky headed the ball to the back of the net for her seventh goal of the season. Junior midfielder Linda Amaya put Birmingham- Southern on top 2-0 off an assist from Plotky in the 39th minute. Plotky then scored the final goal in the 47th minute off an assist from Amaya. Hendrix goalkeeper Allison Mosley denied 13 shots in the match, bringing her season total to 138 saves. Hendrix junior midfielder Hannah McGrew sent a screaming shot to the back of the net from 30 yards out in the 92nd minute to give the Warriors their first conference win of the season on Sunday. McGrew found space and sent a rocket off her left foot to the low corner just 2:34 into overtime. Junior forward Tristan Stolz netted the Warriors’ opening goal in the ninth minute off an assist from sophomore forward Ana Contreras. Millsaps sophomore defender Margaret Eggers knotted the game in the 23rd minute off a cross from senior midfielder Emily Townsend. Hendrix outshot Millsaps 19-12, while the Majors owned a 13-9 advantage in corner kicks. Mosley added seven saves to her league-high total. Field Hockey Hendrix College dropped its final regular season game, 1-0, at on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors now stand at 5-9 overall and 1-7 in SCAC play. Rhodes’ senior forward Lyndsey Gurkovich scored the game-winning goal in the eighth minute. She beat the keeper in a one-on-one breakaway for her seventh goal of the year. Warriors’ senior goalkeeper Alyssa Havens had a solid day in front of the net and Rhodes’ senior goalie Sarah Dockery earned her fifth shutout of the year. The Lynx outshot the Warriors 14-3 and owned an 11-9 advantage in penalty corners. Volleyball Hendrix College went 2-0 this weekend as host of the 2010 Hendrix Ghost Host. The Warriors earned a 3-0 win over and a 3-1 win over Williams Baptist College on Satur- day afternoon at Grove Gymnasium. The Warriors cruised to a 25-10, 25-8, 25-19 win against Rust. First year outside hitter Jordan Spennato stepped up in a big way to lead the team with eight kills. Senior outside hitter Becca Clancy added six kills and senior middle blocker Leah Groat tallied five kills. First year setter Zoe Calhoun paced the team with 25 assists, while senior defensive specialists Sara Gawor and Kim Larson made 13 and 10 digs, respectively. Larson racked up four of the Warriors’ 10 aces. First year middle blocker Alyssa Jaksich was in on four block assists. Hendrix earned a come-from-behind win in the opening set against Williams Baptist, 25-23. The Warriors fell behind early and dropped the second set 19-25, before jumping out to a 10-0 run in the third set and eventually taking a 25-22 win. Hendrix overpowered early in the final set to earn another 25-22 result. Sophomore middle blocker Melissa Clement and first year outside hitter Katie Burchfield hammered 13 kills apiece, while Clancy made 10 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Katie Bates made some powerful swings to bring home eight kills. Calhoun dished out 42 assists and Larson led the way with 24 digs. Clancy’s 18 digs matches her season-high total and marks her fourth double-double of the season. Gawor made 11 digs in the contest. Nov. 2 - 8, 2010

Men’s Cross Country The Hendrix College men’s cross country team earned an eighth-place finish at the 2010 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championships, hosted by Trinity University on the campus of Texas Lutheran University Saturday morning. Colorado College successfully defended their SCAC crown with its second-straight league title. Colorado scored 57 points in the 10-team meet. DePauw was runner-up (72), and Rhodes placed third (74). Centre finished fourth (94), and host Trinity was fifth (99). Southwestern came in sixth place (162), Sewanee earned seventh (164), and Hendrix was eighth (198). Oglethorpe finished in ninth place (296) and Millsaps was 10th (310). Senior Drew Kellum was the Warriors’ top finisher at 21st overall. Kellum ran the 8K race in 26:18.9 for a 5:17 pace. Sophomore Wes Haynie was the second Hendrix runner to cross the line at 27:17.2, good for 40th overall. Sophomore Andres Ramirez was 43rd at 27:32.2 and sophomore Stephen Borutta raced for 46th overall at 27:37.9. Sophomore John Dyer rounded out Hendrix’s top five at 27:44.8. The top 14 finishers in each race garnered All-SCAC Team honors. Hendrix has finished eighth in three of its last four conference races (2010, 2009, 2007). The Warriors tied for seventh in the 2008 SCAC Championships. Women’s Cross Country The Hendrix College women’s cross country team gathered an eighth-place finish at the 2010 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championships, hostedby Trinity Univer- sity on the campus of Texas Lutheran University, Saturday morning. Rhodes College dethroned DePauw University for the 2010 SCAC Title. Rhodes won the event with 18 points. The Lynx took home their seventh SCAC cross country trophy, and their first since 2002. DePauw, which had captured the title forthe past seven years, was runner-up with 63 points. was third in the team event (95), Colorado College placed fourth (107), and host Trinity finished fifth (109). In sixth place was South- western (180), Sewanee came in seventh (186), Hendrix was eighth (236), and Millsaps registered ninth (268). Oglethorpe was disqualified after the race, and did not amass team points. The Warriors outing on Saturday was their first race of the season to qualify for team points. Senior Claire Corban (pictured) led the way with a 41st place finish at 25:38.4. Junior Lolly Plummer, in just her second race of the year, finished 45th overall at 26:04.7. Sophomore Stephanie Davenport was the third Warrior to cross the line at 46th overall with a 26:05.8. Senior Emily Uhar was just 3.9 seconds back from Davenport with a 47th place finish. First year Caiti Rolfes-Haase rounded out the Hendrix five in 56th place at 28:32.4. The top 14 finishers in the race garnered All-SCAC Team honors. This year was the lowest team finish for Hendrix since placing ninth in 2004. The Warriors earned third place in 2009, fourth place in 2008 and tied for sixth in 2007. Hendrix was seventh in 2006 and sixth in 2005. Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving The Hendrix College men’s and women’s swimming teams hosted the 43rd Annual Hendrix Classic on Friday afternoon and then the 48th Annual Hendrix Relays on Saturday morning at Bob Courtway Pool. The women’s team finished sixth overall with 189 points on Friday, while the men ranked seventh with 148 points. The women placed ahead of Southern Collegiate thleticA Conference foe Austin College (105) and the University of New Orleans (94). First year Jo Claire Robertson highlighted action for Hendrix in the Classic with a first place nishfi in the 200 backstroke. Robertson raced for a 2:10.95, just 0.15 faster than second place Ouachita Baptist swimmer Katie Patterson. Junior Vanessa Morris touched the wall sixth in the 500 freestyle at 5:28.58, just 0.33 behind UALR’s Megan Nelson. The women’s 400 medley relay team ranked sixth with a 4:31.25. The men’s 400 freestyle team placed sixth. Seniors Blake Stroud Seth Daves combined with junior Alex Koeppel and first year Blake Givens to post a 4:15.94. The men’s 400 medley relay squad added a seventh place finish. Sophomore Justin Flanagan brought home an eigth-place finish in the 200 freestyle. On Saturday, the women’s 300 breastroke relay team posted the Warriors’ highest finish of the day at fourth (4:00.53). The women’s 200 freestyle relay team placed fifth at 1:53.67 and the 800 freestyle relay squad ranked fifth at 8:31.02. The women’s 1,500 freestyle team grabbed another fifth place finish at 17:27.82 The men’s 800 freestyle relay earned Hendrix’s top finish on Saturday at fourth (7:55.85). The 300 butterfly relay team added a fifth place finish at 2:50.00 and the 400 freestyle squad rounded out the Warriors’ top five finishers at 3:34.76.
