Steers to £1270 Heifers to £1120

All types of stores a cracking trade again with the rising beef price fuelling demand for those stronger forward cattle and with plenty of bulk buyers around looking for grazing types, they did look particularly expensive too on Friday. Top priced steers rose to £1270 for a grand Aberdeen Angus (28m) from David & Stella Drew of Lapford whilst later born Angus bullocks (17m) from Peter Hendy of Plymouth eased to £1095 apiece for a pen of four. Plenty of top quality South bred steers on offer which included a strong pair (27m) from Rachel Leonard, drawing £1245 a life, a bunch of four at £1120 for David Horton of West Alvington and an eye catching trio (24m) from Phil Coaker of Postbridge which reached £1085 a head. A couple of super Simmental bred steers (26m) from Dave Pollard of Black Dog easily made £1220 with several fine runs of Limousin bullocks selling readily to £1170 (27m) for Rachel Leonard and £1140 for Jimmy George up from Falmouth (only 15m). A single Montbeliarde steer (23m) fetched £1065 for Tracey Tope of whilst two decent British Blue steers (23m) ran to £1060 for P Wedden & Partners of Crediton. A pair of well covered Limousin’s (23m) topped the heifer section at £1120 for David Horton again whilst a pen of five striking South Devon’s (24m) From David Cane of Plympton easily reached £1055 apiece. A rangy Limousin heifer (27m) from Peter Slade of Ipplepen looked good money at £1100 as did a pair of Simmentals (22m) also at £1100 for Tracey Tope and a bunch of Charolais heifers (24m) at £1095 for the Shervington family of Hittisleigh. British Blue’s (21m) hit £995 for WA & AR Bater of with the same seller seeing Aberdeen Angus heifers (30m) to £905. Best of the younger females came from Jimmy George with pens of tremendous yearling Limousin’s to a creditable £900 and £880.

A tight entry this week saw stirks and suckled calves remain a good trade with the top hitting £780 for Limousin cross steers

(8m) from Peter & Jake Chisholm of with others off the same good farm and of a similar ilk to £775 and £725, Ray Tratt of Honiton realised £725 for Aberdeen Angus steers (13m), a pen of Simmental cross dairy steers from Paul Mills and Family of Sampford Peverell obtained £605 (11m) whilst smart young dairy bred British Blue steers from AM Bond of Kingsbridge topped at £590 (7m). A lovely show of heifers from James & Rebecca Martin of Lewdown saw the best achieve £620 with others to £610, £580, £550 and £540, all being Limousin crosses (11-14m). Aberdeen Angus heifers from Ray Tratt levelled out at £610 (13m) whilst younger British Blue heifers from AM Bond realised £485 (7m). Bulls topped at £750 for Peter & Jake Chisholm with Fleckviehs (10m) from Frank Pike of Clayhidon achieving £620.

A very small entry of Calves when Farmers are at home making the most of this weather ahead of the CALVES - 10.15 am rain forecast tomorrow! Heifers topped at £258 for a Charolasi heifer from Frank Pike who sold others to £250 & £235, other Charolais heifers to £245 for Messrs RH & MJ Hurford. Limousin Heifers to £225 for Phillip & Caroline Cox of Lifton and £200 & £195 for Messrs AT & GM Wilson of Kingsbridge. Aberdeen Angus heifers to £180 for Messrs RH & MJ Hurford. Dairy Shorthorn bulls a cracking trade to £135 & £125 for Roy Collins of Honiton. Friesians to £58 for Messrs RH & MJ Hurford.

157 Store Lambs & Hoggs A better number forward comprised of nearly 100 new season stores that sold away well for the quality on offer. Best pens to £100 for Robert & Edward Mortimer of Kennford who also had others at £88 whilst other lambs sold to £75.50 for Richard Pratt of Gittisham and £70 for Chris Hall of Poole. Hoggs to £88 for Matthew McCann of South Brent, £85 for James Skevington of Washbourne, £82 for M & M Ravnkilde of Cadeleigh and £77.50 for David Boyles of . Overall average of £69.80.

35 Grazing Ewes Thicker ewes to £69 for Matthew McCann whilst a mixed pen of Romney’s from P & P Howlett & Son Farming Ltd of Kingswear achieved £65, the Baxter family of Exwick saw their best make £58 and James Skevington sold a Jacob Ram at £53.50.
