L’état et les possibilités de promotion de la figure féminine dans le roman Celles qui attendent de Fatou Diome Mémoire Stéphanie Leclerc-Audet Maîtrise en études littéraires Maître ès arts (M.A.) Québec, Canada © Stéphanie Leclerc-Audet, 2013 RÉSUMÉ Nous proposons, dans ce mémoire, d’analyser l’état et les possibilités de promotion du personnage féminin dans le roman Celles qui attendent de Fatou Diome (2010) à travers les individualités de quatre protagonistes, Arame, Bougna, Coumba et Daba. Les contraintes et restrictions inhérentes à l’environnement social textuel ainsi que l’île sénégalaise de Niodior influent directement sur l’état de la figure féminine dans le roman. Dans cette optique, les pratiques sociales de la polygamie et de l’union matrimoniale orchestrée par les aînés sont deux vecteurs désignés comme tributaires de l’insatisfaction des héroïnes. En réaction directe aux pressions de leur société, laquelle prône pour la femme un travail acharné pour sa survie et un mutisme quant au mécontentement ressenti face à sa condition, la femme désire accéder à une élévation. Tandis qu’Arame, Bougna, Coumba et Daba sont secouées par les revers de l’existence, nous constatons que leurs possibilités de promotion s’organisent à l’encontre des règles établies par la tradition. La meilleure stratégie d’élévation, pour les héroïnes du roman Celles qui attendent, s’avère la conquête d’une plus grande liberté d’action et d’opinion pour le sujet féminin, au risque de bouleverser l’ordre socialement établi. iii AVANT-PROPOS Tout naturellement, mes premiers remerciements s’adressent à ma directrice de mémoire, Madame Olga Hél-Bongo. Elle a été pour moi, par son attitude joviale et sa rigueur professionnelle, un guide tout au long de ce processus. Je m’estime honorée d’avoir été son élève. C’est dans un élan respectueux que j’exprime ma reconnaissance à Monsieur Justin Bisanswa, titulaire de la Chaire de recherche du Canada en littératures africaines et Francophonie. Il représente pour moi un professeur et un mentor mémorable. De près ou de loin, il a toujours conservé un œil averti sur mes états et, bien entendu, sur mes possibilités de promotion. Je lance un salut résolument amical à mes camarades et collègues de la Chaire de recherche en littératures africaines et de la Francophonie, qui m’ont accueillie et accompagnée durant mes deux années d’études à la maîtrise. Ils ont ponctué, de leur présence active et sympathique, mon quotidien et mes recherches. Je ne manquerai pas de revenir aux sources que je partage avec eux, le temps d’une autre discussion d’un grand intérêt. Quelques personnes ont été des figures particulièrement marquantes durant ce parcours. Je cite, entre autres, Mbaye Diouf, que je remercie pour son soutien, ses encouragements, et de nombreux moments passés en sa compagnie à m’imprégner du Sénégal et de la recherche littéraire, au fil de mille questions. Résumé La condition de la femme africaine dans les romans africains contemporains se révèle aujourd’hui en pleine mutation : entre les traditions, qui la désirent confinée aux sphères intérieure et familiale, et une émancipation de son statut favorisant l’extérioration de son potentiel. Elle oscille, en fait, entre « la sauvegarde du passé traditionnel et l’avant-garde de l’évolution1 ». C’est dans cette lignée que s’inscrit l’écrivaine franco-sénégalaise Fatou Diome, dont la plume se positionne en instance de dénonciation et de révolution de tout état restreint, diminué ou même soumis de la figure féminine. Par le biais de ses romans, Diome effectue un portrait, mais s’avance parfois au-delà de la représentation vers une entreprise, parfois triomphante, d’élévation du personnage féminin. Figures conservatrices des mœurs, les femmes telles que décrites dans les premiers romans africains2 sont porteuses de la pérennité des traditions. Les protagonistes féminins diomiens, conscientes de cette réalité, la contemplent tout en ressentant l’urgence d’un changement. Salie, protagoniste du Ventre de l’Atlantique3, ressent fortement que la volonté d’émancipation qui l’anime scelle une différence idéologique l’isolant des autres femmes de son village : « Menhirs sur le socle de la tradition, le tourbillon du brassage culturel qui me faisait vaciller les laissait indemnes. Elles suivaient leur ligne, je cherchais la mienne vers une autre direction; nous n’avions rien à nous dire » (VA, 60-61). Le roman Celles qui attendent4, publié
