. Carolyn Beckenbaugh TIME TO LOOK AT

Presented by THE WOMEN STUDENTS

OF THE UNIVERSITY OF THE 1951 DOLPHIN

The chimes of Irvine clearly resound across the Pennsylvania Campus above the din of city traffic and hum of construction work. Professors step up on the lecture platforms, students remove the caps from their fountain pens, and late corners hurriedly dis appear into the ivy covered buildings. And so the day begins and passes, and the week, and the month. The academic year comes to an end, leaving behind the memories of classes, friends, and extracurricular activities, touched by uncertainty, as the United Nations seeks to meet the challenge of aggressive. countries. Looking back, however, we sense more than just a year of memories; to each of us it has been a wonderful experience, meaningful and integrated. DEDICATED with

"Come right on in" were the friendly words that greeted us, when as Fresh- men we stood on the door marked Anne B. Speirs, Assistant to the Dean of Women. From that moment of our Freshman Interview with Miss Speirs, we knew that we had a real friend in 114 Bennett Hall, one who was interested in us not only as a class, but as individuals. In our infant days at the University it was to her that we came when we needed advice in planning teas, luncheons, and other class functions, and how many times have we listened to her famous lecture on "the manner and procedure of drawing money from the class treasury"! In our Sophomore year she counseled us on such matters as class blazers, Pirates Ball, and Soph Supper. As Juniors we passed to another advisor, but by that time we needed no official claim to stop in to see her when our numerous weighty problems needed solutions. Now, as we leave the University, we carry with us many memories of Miss Speirs—clutching a freshman list in her hand, laughingly accepting at Under gradCamp the title of "the walking dictionary," and sitting up a night at Freshman Camp, because upper clansmen had accidentally mislayed her bedding. In appreciation of her guidance, understanding, and unselfish service to us in our years at Pennsylvania, we dedicate this yearbook to Anne B. Speirs. Sincere Appreciation ADMINISTRATION

Under the leadership of Dr. Stassen, the administration of the University has continued to expand the curricular opportunities for women, as well as to give impetus to the devel opment of the new campus. In closer contact with the women students is the personnel of 114 Bennett Hall. Dr. Hottel and her staff have been so helpful guiding the numerous extra- curricular activities and assisting each co-ed to find her place in the University.

Webster defines graduate "to admit to an academic degree at the end of a course." All of us are aware of the value of this degree we are about to receive. But how many have thought seriously of the greater sig- nificance of arriving at the end of a course? We are apt to become engrossed in the excitement of these approaching days: Tensions are released; examinations terminated; responsibilities vanish. At such a time it is easy to under-value the privilege of four years of uni- versity experience. ATHLETIC SAGES

A broad intra-mural program was empha sized by the W.A.A., headed by Squeaky Stull. Either I.F. or class games were played in volley-ball, basketball, and softball. The annual spring swimming meet was also planned by this group of class officers, team captains and managers, and Athlon. Class trophies, current team pictures, and indi- vidual plaques will be placed in the W.A.A. lounge.

Sportsmanship and scholarship are equally stressed in the Womans Athletic Honorary Society. President Gayle Meacham and the other six members of Athlon have undertaken several projects this year. One was the codi fication of a strong managerial system and equally beneficial was a food concession during I.F. basketball contests to purchase sports equipment for University Camp for Girls.

Newcomers to Penn invaded the hockey squad last fall and exhibited enough skill to become active on all three teams. Particularly impressive was Eussie Thayer, freshman cen ter forward, who along with Peggy Smythe, Sue Budd, and Andy Anderson, contributed the majority of varsity goals. The final hockey scoreboard shows that Penn succumbed to Swarthmore, Bryn Mawr, and Beaver, but the only decisive victory was Beavers 5-0 upset. In the other two games, both teams were so evenly matched that it was a toss-up in the minds of the spectators. The outstanding contest of the season was the Temple game, which ended in a 3-3 deadlock. For Penn, however, it was still a moral victory. Noteworthy among the newcomers were Frances Hessert, Mary Ellen McNichol, Lois Dilks, Barbara Scott, Eussie Thayer, and Sally Gerlach. Although the backfield will bemoan the loss of stalwarts McKaig, Stull, and Nelson, the future looks far from dim.

Lack of time caused by scholastic pressure and outside activities did not dampen the enthusiasm of the sixty girls who came out for the 1951 team. Coaches Welsh and Funk spent many hours conscientiously screening for the final varsity list. Judged on skill, spirit, and attendance, the remaining players diligently practiced three days a week, and even parted with Saturday morning sleep. The formidable trio, Squeaky Stull, Betty McKaig, and Rocky Nelson proved an iron block for even the trickiest forwards. The collossal combination of Hawk, Johnson, and newcomer ORourke became proficient in mid-court, hook, set, lay-up, and free shots. ORourkes dodging skill and accurate eye, Hawks speedy rebound recoveries, and John sons domination under the basket made Penns hoopsters a strong challenge to all who opposed them.

This season, the womens rifle team distinguished itself by becoming the first womens group to be admitted to the American Rifle Association. Led by cap- tain-manager Polly Shook, the team, comprised of nine other sharpshooters, met New Hampshire, Penn State, and Ohio State in a series of postal matches.

TOUCHE!

Encouraged by new jackets, foils, and masks, the fencing team opened this years schedule with a match against Bryn Mawr, later including Tyler and New Jersey State Teachers College in its six-match season. Captain Lois Ben son, Dodie Thayer, and Eileen Sallom returned from the 1950 team to strengthen the duellists.

STRIKE!

The Walnut Street bowling alleys were kept active by Penns bowling team practicing to improve its scores before meeting Temple and Drexel. Helen Payne captained the 1951 team, which aided by Mrs. Farquhar, also included Angela Manno, Betty Sheen, Sandra Nippon, and Ruth Moore. BADMINTON—First Row: E. Nelson, M. Rice, M. GOLF—C. Winter brought the badminton courts back into full swing—Sue Budd in the spotlight as captain. Eight of last years point-collectors returned to Coach Lyle for another swat at the birdie. The season concurred with varsity basketball and swimming—still, more girls came out than ever before. Twenty-five girls remained on the squad. All four of last years golfers are again crying "fore!" on Miss Lyles golf team. They spend most of their club-wielding career practicing at the St. Martins course of the Philadelphia Cricket Club. They only match tees with Beaver and Swarthmore. Seven performances, highlighted by an appearance with the Philadelphia Orchestra, has comprised the modern dance groups most provocative season.
