Family Size Ideals in Pakistan: Precarity and Uncertainty Abstract Increasing contraceptive use and awareness of the benefits of a small family has been amongst the primary activities of the Pakistan’s family planning program. Despite their efforts, an ideal family size of four children has persisted in Pakistan for the last two decades. A significant body of literature has sought to disentangle and make sense of the dynamics informing these ideals in Pakistan. This work has highlighted financial insecurity, its effects on parents' aspirations for large families, and son preference. Missing, however, is an in-depth investigation of the social, economic, political, and cultural contexts in which family size ideals are embedded. We draw upon 13 months’ worth of ethnographic data from a village in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to situate family size ideals within their wider sociocultural, political, and economic context. Our findings demonstrate that respondents’ preference for larger families with several sons was an attempt to manage the precarity of daily life structured by regional conflict and violence, structural, intergenerational poverty, class-based exclusion from systems of power and patriarchy. These results allude to the importance of addressing the larger structural factors that contribute to large family size ideals. Introduction Established in 1965, Pakistan’s family planning program has sought to modify the fertility behaviour of Pakistani citizens by increasing their contraceptive use and awareness of the benefits of a small family (Robinson, Shah, and Shah 1981). Despite their efforts, an ideal family size of four children has persisted in the country since the 1990’s (Avan and Akhund 2006, National Institute of Population Studies 2013). -

i An Ethnographic Investigation of Swara among the Pashtun People of Jalalabad, Afghanistan: Exploring Swara as a Conflict Settlement Mechanism from the Perspective of Men By Masood Khan A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Manitoba in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of MASTER OF ARTS Department of Anthropology University of Manitoba Winnipeg Copyright © 2016 by Masood Khan ii Abstract This thesis presents an ethnographic analysis of the practice of swara marriage among the Pashtun people of Jalalabad, Afghanistan, based on nine weeks of fieldwork in 2015. Swara is a form of compensation marriage practiced by Pashtun people in Pakistan and Afghanistan through which disputes between men are resolved through the giving away in marriage of girls, often minors, by guilty parties to victim parties. By employing practice theory and the theory of sacrifice, swara marriages are analyzed through the conceptualizations of honor, revenge, and ghairat (“bravery”). Focusing on six swara cases, the first half of the thesis explores the concepts of honor, revenge, and ghairat during the time of feuds. The second half of the thesis directly focuses on swara marriages and analyzes them through the concepts of symbolic capital and sacrifice. iii Acknowledgements Though only my name appears on the cover of this thesis, it is the product of efforts of many people. Chapel Hill 2010 Approved by: Yasmin Saikia Daniel Botsman Charles Kurzman ABSTRACT Zaheer Abbas: Construction of Bengali Muslim Identity in Colonial Bengal, c. 1870-1920 (Under the direction of Yasmin Saikia) This thesis explores the various discourses on the formation of Bengali Muslim identity in colonial Bengal until 1920s before it becomes hardened and used in various politically mobilizable forms. For the purpose of this thesis, I engage multiple articulations of the Bengali Muslim identity to show the fluctuating representations of what and who qualifies as Bengali Muslim in the period from 1870 to 1920. I critically engage with new knowledge production that the colonial census undertook, the different forms of non-fictional Bengali literature produced by the vibrant vernacular print industry, and the views of the English-educated Urdu speaking elites of Bengal from which can be read the ensemble of forces acting upon the formation of a Bengali Muslim identity. Intekhab Hossain Lecturer, Department of Sociology, Aliah University, Kolkata, India; e-mail: [email protected] KEYWORDS ABSTRACT Muslims; deprivation; West Bengal is a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual and multi-religious state of India where various seclusion; backwardness; ethnic groups and creeds have been living side by side since long past. Muslims are the principal development minority of this multi-religious state and constitute about 27% of the state’s total population. Yet little is known about the socio-economic and political dynamics of this community due to lack of fieldwork. This paper focuses on the contemporary dynamics of the Muslim life in West Bengal from an anthropological perspective. A especial effort has also been made in order to find out the factors contributing to form a bottleneck in development and social change. Introduction The economic growth of a country cannot be attained without the development of its entire population at both micro and macro level. Poverty is considered to be a curse to any economy and Muslims are generally the poorest segment of Indian society in spite of the fact that they are both able and willing to be educated and work in any field. They are considered a backward community in India both educationally and economically. Moreover, unless an assessment is made in order to find out the root causes of their backwardness and poverty, they will remain so and thus continue to contribute negatively to the economic progress of the country (Rahaman and Bhuimali 2011:9). -
Pakistan 2017 International Religious Freedom Report
PAKISTAN 2017 INTERNATIONAL RELIGIOUS FREEDOM REPORT Executive Summary The constitution establishes Islam as the state religion and requires all provisions of the law to be consistent with Islam. The constitution also states, “subject to law, public order, and morality, every citizen shall have the right to profess, practice, and propagate his religion.” The courts continued to enforce blasphemy laws, whose punishment ranges from life in prison to the death sentence for a range of charges, including “defiling the Prophet Muhammad.” According to civil society reports, there were at least 50 individuals imprisoned on blasphemy charges, at least 17 of whom had received death sentences. According to data provided by civil society organizations (CSOs), police registered at least 10 new blasphemy cases against 17 individuals. CSOs reported lower courts often failed to adhere to basic evidentiary standards in blasphemy cases. In April a mob shot and beat to death Mashal Khan, a student at Abdul Wali Khan University in Mardan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), following an accusation of blasphemy later deemed by investigators to be false, which prompted widespread condemnation in the country. Ahmadiyya Muslim Community leaders and human rights organizations continued to express concerns about the government’s targeting of Ahmadis for blasphemy, and Ahmadis continued to be affected by discriminatory and ambiguous legislation that denied them basic rights. On October 2, the president signed into law a bill that changed the electoral oath affirming belief that the Prophet Muhammed is the final prophet of Islam to a “declaration” and abolished separate voter lists for Ahmadis, sparking weeks of protest. In response, the government attributed the change in the oath to “clerical error,” and parliament reversed the provisions. -

Since 2003, we have published the calendar in a daily planner format that provides our consumers with a variety of information related to international terrorism, including wanted terrorists; terrorist group fact sheets; technical issue related to terrorist tactics, techniques, and procedures; and potential dates of importance that terrorists might consider when planning attacks. The cover of this year’s CT Calendar highlights terrorists’ growing use of social media and other emerging online technologies to recruit, radicalize, and encourage adherents to carry out attacks. This year will be the last hardcopy publication of the calendar, as growing production costs necessitate our transition to more cost- effective dissemination methods. In the coming years, NCTC will use a variety of online and other media platforms to continue to share the valuable information found in the CT Calendar with a broad customer set, including our Federal, State, Local, and Tribal law enforcement partners; agencies across the Intelligence Community; private sector partners; and the US public.
