PROVISIONAL PROGRAMME AND CALL FOR ABSTRACTS 7TH EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON PESTICIDES AND RELATED ORGANIC MICROPOLLUTANTS IN THE ENVIRONMENT AND 13TH SYMPOSIUM ON CHEMISTRY AND FATE OF MODERN PESTICIDES Porto (Portugal), 7-10th of October, 2012 WELCOME On behalf of the Organising Committee, we are pleased to invite the scientific community engaged in Environmental and Food Chemistry to attend the 7th European Conference on Pesticides and Related Organic Micropollutants in the Environment and the 13th Symposium on Chemistry and Fate of Modern Pesticides, which will be held, jointly, in Porto (Portugal) on the 7-10th of October, 2012. VENUE Porto (“Cidade Invicta”), also known as Oporto, is the second largest city in Portugal and one of the major urban areas in the Iberian Peninsula. Located in the northern bank of the Douro river estuary in northern Portugal, Porto is one of the oldest European centres and registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. Cale, a pre- Roman settlement on the southern bank, was occupied by the Romans and became known as Portus Cale. This Latin name has been referred to as the origin of the name "Portugal". The Visigoths held the city from around 540 until 716, when the Moors gained control. They relinquished Porto in the late 11th century. Porto is famed for its rich port wine and Douro riverside hills where the grapes are produced. Porto features everything from medieval alleys to the remains of Roman city walls and fortresses. Also offers a number of rather Parisian-style plazas, magnificent churches and an enchanting atmosphere. The twin city of Vila Nova de Gaia offers a splendid view of Porto and holds the wine storage warehouses. The city itself has much to offer to tourists of all ages, with the balmy summer evenings seeing crowds regularly partying along the banks of the meandering Douro river. Among the points of interest of the city are the old quarter, with narrow, cobbled streets; the cathedral (12-18th century); and the 18th-century Torre dos Clérigos (Tower of the Clerics), a granite structure 75 m high designed by the famous architect Nicolau Nasoni. In the neighbourhood, the visitors can find the University of Porto (1911), the Higher School of Fine Arts (1836), and the National Museum of Soares dos Reis, containing a collection of paintings and antiquities. Modern architecture is represented by Casa da Música. The gardens and Art Gallery of Serralves Foundation call for a visit. The conference will take place at the Alfândega Congress Centre, an old Customs Building constructed in the second half of the 19th century, designed by the French architect Jean Colson. ABOUT THE IAREN th th IAREN - Water Institute of the Northern Region is honoured to organize jointly the 7 and 13 editions of these prestigious meetings. IAREN is a Non-profit Association of Public Utility devoted to Research and Development, and Other Scientific and Technical Activities in the field of Water Quality. It was founded in 1991 within the University of Porto. Its main mission is to provide support for the problems presented by its members: principally, town councils, non- governmental organizations and health services; private companies, who use water in production, and companies linked to treatment, distribution and analysis of drinking water. Its research activity is focused on the study of organic micropollutants in drinking water, surface water, ground water, sewage, soils and sediments. Nowadays, it is functioning in new purpose-built facilities in Matosinhos running an EN ISO/IEC 17025 Quality System Accredited by IPAC and ILAC-MRA for 280 parameters. IAREN joined NORMAN Association as Founding member and is a Reference Laboratory in Portugal for the determination of Emerging Pollutants. AIMS AND SCOPE The aims of this conference are: - to provide a communication forum for the exchange of knowledge and technology among scientists interested in Pesticide Analysis and related Organic Micropollutants in Environmental and Food matrices; - to promote the collaboration and transfer of knowledge among scientists, industry officers, official authorities and environmental managers concerning priority and emerging organic contaminants, particularly pesticides, risk evaluation in the environment and food, analytical breakthroughs, soil and water recovery and algorithms for fate modelling, experimental design and interpretation of data. - to encourage green analytical procedures and environmental awareness - to support informed regulatory decisions and compliance with legislation - to emphasize the contribution of Environmental and Food Sciences for the well-being of humankind The conference is organized under the auspices of the: IAREN - Water Institute of the Northern Region (www.iaren.pt) ENEAP - European-Mediterranean Association for Environmental Education Assessment and Protection (http://www.uoi.gr/research/labs/envitech/ENEAP_EN.htm) IAEAC - International Association of Environmental Analytical Chemistry (http://www.iaeac.com) Support is also provided by: NORMAN - Network of reference laboratories, research centres and related organisations for monitoring of emerging environmental substances (http://www.norman-network.net/index_php.php) JRC-IES - Joint Research Centre- Institute for Environment and Sustainability (http://ies.jrc.ec.europa.eu/) GRIFA - Pesticide and Environment Italian Research Group (http://www.grifa.org/index_en.htm) CONGRESS TOPICS - New analytical techniques and strategies for pesticide analysis - Trends in the analysis of emerging pollutants (pesticides and other organic pollutants) - Levels of pesticide residues in water, soil and air - Residue levels in agricultural products and food safety - Behaviour of pesticides and related organic micropollutants in the environment - Modelling of pesticide fate in the environment - Ecotoxicity and environmental risk assessment - Environmental Protection and remediation techniques - Application of chemometrical methods to pesticide and micropollutant analysis SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME The programme will include Invited Lectures given by outstanding scientists and, Oral and Posters Contributions chosen on the basis of abstract selection. Scientists and representatives of enterprises and manufacturers are welcome. A number of oral communications will be reserved to specialists of enterprises and manufacturers. Before closing the meeting, the “Roland W. Frei Award” sponsored by IAEAC will be given to the best poster presented by a young scientist. GRIFA will award a grant to the presenting author of an oral communication (young researcher, max. 35 years old) in the form of reimbursement of his registration fee, and/or travel and/or accommodation costs incurred to attend the conference, up to a maximum of € 500.00. Members of Scientific Committee will select the winners on the basis of scientific relevance of treated topics and the quality of the presentations. A special issue of the International Journal of Environmental Analytical Chemistry devoted to the conference will be edited, containing peer-reviewed papers following the regular rules of this journal.
