Nationalism Through Sacred Chant? Research of Byzantine Musicology in Totalitarian Romania Nicolae GHEORGHIță National University of Music, Bucharest Str. Ştirbei Vodă nr. 33, Sector 1, Ro-010102, Bucharest, Romania E-mail: [email protected] (Received: June 2015; accepted: September 2015) Abstract: In an atheist society, such as the communist one, all forms of the sacred were anathematized and fiercly sanctioned. Nevertheless, despite these ideological barriers, important articles and volumes of Byzantine – and sometimes Gregorian – musicological research were published in totalitarian Romania. Numerous Romanian scholars participated at international congresses and symposia, thus benefiting of scholarships and research stages not only in the socialist states, but also in places regarded as ‘affected by viruses,’ such as the USA or the libraries on Mount Athos (Greece). This article discusses the mechanisms through which the research on religious music in Romania managed to avoid ideological censorship, the forms of camouflage and dissimulation of musicological information with religious subject that managed to integrate and even impose over the aesthetic visions of the Party. The article also refers to cultural politics enthusiastically supporting research and valuing the heritage of ancient music as a fundamental source for composers and their creations dedicated to the masses. International Conference KNOWLEDGE-BASED ORGANIZATION Vol. XXIII No 2 2017 THE INTERNATIONAL IMAGE OF ION I. C. BRĂTIANU IN 1919 Gheorghe CALCAN Petroleum-Gas University of Ploiești, Romania [email protected] Abstract: Our paper aims to present how Ion I. C. Brătianu was perceived outside national borders in a very important moment of the Romanian national history, namely the international recognition of the Great Union, within the Peace Conference at Paris-Versailles in 1919 -1920. Ion I. C. Brătianu was at that moment Prime Minister and the leader of the Romanian delegation at Versailles. Foreign countries perceived him as a very powerful personality, capable to influence other states with similar interests in Central and South Eastern Europe. Brătianu stoutly and patriotically defended the Romanian interests. Therefore, although his position was correct, it came into conflict with the interests of the great powers. Brătianu would not give up his principles and decided to leave the Peace Conference. French media was objective in their accounts and proved favourable to the Romanian position. Keywords: Ion I. C. ABSTRACT The research presented in this thesis addresses the significance of Romanian WWI sites as places of remembrance and heritage, by exploring the case of Maramureș against the standards of national and international heritage standards. The work provided the first ever survey of WWI sites on the Eastern Front, showing that the Prislop Pass conflictual landscape holds undeniable national and international heritage value both in terms of physical preservation and in terms of mapping on the memorial-historical record. The war sites demonstrate heritage and remembrance value by meeting heritage criteria on account of their preservation state, rarity, authenticity, research potential, the embedded war knowledge and their historical-memorial functions. The results of the research established that the war sites not only satisfy heritage legal requirements at various scales but are also endangered. -

Received: 25 September 2020; Accepted: 29 October 2020; Published: 2 November 2020 Abstract: Currently, most countries have to deal with multiple discrepancies that have arisen between the constraints of sustainable development and the return to traditions, involving food producers, as well as consumers, aspects that are also easily noticed in Romania. Thus, the main purpose of this study was to assess the nutritional quality of the Romanian traditional diet using a nutrient profiling method based on the Nutri-Score algorithm, applied to several representative Romanian traditional dishes. Because this algorithm has the capacity to highlight the amount (%) of fruits, vegetables, and nuts from a certain dish, it might be considered an indicator of the sustainable valences of the selected meals. The results showed that the traditional menus do not correspond to a balanced and sustainable eating behavior; thus, it is recommended to improve the Romanian pattern of food consumption and to ensure its sustainable basis. In order to achieve this goal, we propose the development of a new paradigm of the contemporary Romanian food style incorporating three main directions of action: acceptance, adaptation, and transformation. -

The poetry, a christian resistance support in Romanian prisons Ana NECHITA Abstract: Documents of special importance for their content, giving the voice of a tumultuous and broken destiny, which marked the young generation of the 1960’s, the poems of communist prisons are a significant sound of experiences had in suffering by those who wrote them. Pages written with blood, these poems by their testimonial value, require from us not to ignore their long sacrificial experience, using the freedom, stolen to these authors, for the rebuilding of the nation and the reconstruction of historical truth. The prison poetry, being between the fighting weapons of spiritual resistance, is located near the divine, tending to transfiguration, thing which is happening not few times. Thus, poetry of the prisons becomes a direct way of communicating of the one behind the bars with God. Endowed with the talent of rhyme and having the conscience of fight for truth, for a Romanian creed, these „angels of pain”, as they were called poets of communist prisons in Romania, assured their spiritual survival by sacrificing the best of them on the country altar, replacing the moments of indignation with life in spirit, and here pain is receiving a salvation sense. The lyrics of the imprisoned poets, springing out from pain and completed through pain, formed bright candles from the overflowing of their hearts for all those which was facing the same situation. In the shadow of the cell, under the lightless Professor of Romanian language and literature at “Ion Holban” Technical College, Iaşi. Romania Ana NECHITA vault of the lead mines, along with prayer, the poetry was a saving word, a flasher that lightened and assuaged in the darkness. -

1st International Conference: The Psaltic Art as an Autonomous Science, 29 June-3 Jult 2014, Volos, Greece Contributions to the adaptation to Romanian of chants in the 3rd volume of the Antologhia by Nectarie Frimu Zamfira- Irina Dănilă* [email protected] Nectarie Frimu, the bishop of Tripoleos (†1856), born in Moldavia, is known in specialised literature as the translator and composer of Romanian psaltic music. His creation, which is of great importance, is contained in the two musical collections he published, Anthology of church chants, 3rd volume (Neamţ, 1840) and a Book of church chants (Iaşi, 1846). They were sung and appreciated especially in the second half of the 19th century, when they were circulated both in printed form and in manuscript. The present study aims at revealing a part of the means used in the process of “adaptation to Romanian” used by Nectarie Frimu in his translations in the 3rd volume of the Anthology containing chants performed during the Holy Liturgy. The main musical sources of his translations into Romanian are the pieces by the great post Byzantine composers Daniil Protopsaltis, Petros Lampadarios, Petros Vyzantios as well as the interpretations of the reformers Chourmouzios Chartofilax and Gregorios Protopsaltis. In terms of melody contour, the composer observes the patterns of the Greek musical model by faithfully absorbing the specific formulae, of the main musical cadences and of the modulations of the musical text. In terms of the relation between text and melody, psaltic melodies are adapted or sometimes even masterfully recreated according to the prosodic characteristics specific of Romanian, which offers the musical discourse fluency.
