  • Unbound Jazz: Composing and Performing in a Multi- Cultural Tonality
Unbound Jazz: Composing and Performing in a Multi- Cultural Tonality By Carlo Estolano Commentaries for the PhD folio of compositions University of York Music December 2017 2 3 Unbound Jazz: Composing and Performing in a Multi-Cultural Tonality Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of a PhD degree in Music at The University of York, December 2018 by Carlo Estolano. Abstract This folio is conceived to propose and demonstrate music realisation of original compositions throughout the employment of elements of mainly two distinct sources: a selection from the wide palette of Brazilian folk styles that have improvisation as a strong element, which is internationally acknowledged as Brazilian Jazz; and its intersections with a certain style of European Jazz represented by artists notable by their keenness to combine elements from distinct musical genres with their Classical background, such as Ralph Towner, Jan Garbarek, John Abercrombie, Eberhard Weber, Kenny Wheeler, Terje Rypdal, Keith Jarrett to name a few. Both Brazilian and European approaches to Jazz seem to share processes of appropriation of foreign musical languages, as well as utilising characteristic features of their own traditions. Another common ground is their relation with some elements and procedures of classical music. The methodology to accomplish an organized collection of musical material was to divide them in five major influences, part of them by composers and part by genres notable by having evolved through absorbing elements from distinct cultural sources. In five projects, fifteen original compositions are provided along with their recorded and/or filmed performances and commentaries about the compositional aspects, concerningthe style or composer focused on.

  • Latin American Gala
LATIN AMERICAN GALA SAT 17 AUG 2019 CONCERT HALL, QPAC PROGRAM | LATIN AMERICAN GALA I WELCOME Dear Concertgoer, From early in my career I have championed Latin American music. In my 20s, I founded the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas which was dedicated to performing and recording these works, some of which you will hear tonight. I know for many people, orchestral music is associated with European traditions, but there really is so much amazing music from all corners of the globe. As a travelling conductor, I am always discovering new orchestral sounds and flavours, brought to life by new composers. It is my hope that you will enjoy this journey to Latin America, and may discover you love the music too. It is my great joy to welcome my dear friend Yamandu Costa to Brisbane this evening. He is a remarkably talented musician, and he will perform his very own Concerto for us this evening. It is sure to be a treat. Another highlight of tonight's concert is Enrico Chapela's ĺnguesu. Inspired by a soccer final in 1999 where Mexico beat Brazil – an event which has become a legend in my home country – this piece shows how orchestral music can create a unique musical space. The instruments become characters, animated and passionate. This piece is an explicit reminder that music is about communication between performers and audience. I hope you feel that connection with your Queensland Symphony Orchestra as we perform for you tonight. Finally, I must say a special thank you to the students of Brisbane Girls Grammar School who are joining us this evening.

  • The Brazilian Seven-String Guitar: Traditions, Techniques and Innovations
The Brazilian seven-string guitar: Traditions, techniques and innovations Adam John May Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Music - Musicology/Ethnomusicology (with course work component) September 2013 Melbourne Conservatorium of Music The University of Melbourne Produced on archival quality paper i Abstract Since the early 1980s a new and unique repertoire has emerged for the seven-string guitar, known in Portuguese as the violão de sete-cordas, a Brazilian instrument typically played in choro ensembles. This thesis demonstrates, through musical analysis, that this new repertoire is a result of two converging musical influences, both the Brazilian six-string guitar repertoire and the traditional accompaniment role of the seven-string guitar in choro ensembles. Choro is a genre of Brazilian instrumental music that developed in Rio de Janeiro during the late nineteenth century and continues to be played throughout Brazil, as well as gaining popularity in other parts of the world. The Brazilian seven-string guitar emerged in Rio de Janeiro at the beginning of the twentieth-century; photographic evidence and recordings confirm that it was included in choro ensembles as early as the 1910s. Traditionally strung with steel strings and played using a metal thumb-pick, the instrument provides a counterpoint accompaniment line that is generally improvised. In the early 1980s a small number of musicians experimented with the use of nylon strings; this resulted in timbral variations and greater expressive qualities similar to the standard classical guitar. Guitarists began to use this new version of the seven-string guitar as a solo instrument, as well as in other musical settings outside of typical choro groups; this significant development is referred to as the duas escolas or two schools of performance practice.

  • Yamandu Costa Biografia

  • Tradition and Innovation in Brazilian Popular Music: Keyboard Percussion Instruments in Choro
Tradition and Innovation in Brazilian Popular Music: Keyboard Percussion Instruments in Choro by Mark James Duggan A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts Faculty of Music University of Toronto © Copyright by Mark James Duggan 2011 Tradition and Innovation in Brazilian Popular Music: Keyboard Percussion Instruments in Choro Mark James Duggan Doctor of Musical Arts Faculty of Music University of Toronto 2011 Abstract The use of keyboard percussion instruments in choro, one of the earliest forms of Brazilian popular music, is a relatively recent phenomenon and its expansion into university music programs and relocation from small clubs and private homes to concert halls has changed the way that choro is learned and performed. For many Brazilians, this kind of innovation in a “traditional” genre represents a challenge to their notion of a Brazilian cultural identity. This study examines the dynamic relationship that Brazilians have with representations of their culture, especially in the area of popular music, through an in depth discussion of the use of keyboard percussion instruments within the genre of choro. I discuss the implications of using keyboard percussion in choro with a detailed description of its contemporary practice and a critical examination of the sociological and academic issues that surround choro historically and as practiced today. This includes an historical overview of choro and organology of keyboard percussion instruments in Brazil. I discuss multiple perspectives on the genre including a ii consideration of choro as part of the “world music” movement and choro’s ambiguous relationship to jazz. Through an examination of the typical instrumentation and performance conventions used in choro, I address the meanings and implications of the adaptation of those practices and of the various instrumental roles found in choro to keyboard percussion instruments.

I thank Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) and the Center for Latin American Studies for the opportunity to learn Portuguese in Rio de Janeiro (especially Amanda Wolfe). I thank Dr. Welson Tremura for introducing me to the Brazilian guitar, for mentoring me in all of my various studies, for yelling at me in rehearsals, for being a friend when I needed him, for letting me stay at his great house in São Jose do Rio Preto, and for all of the wonderful opportunities to play Brazilian music. • A Milonga E As Narrativas Na Região Do Pampa
Palavras chave: milonga – fronteira – identidade – pampa ABSTRACT: To understand the frontier is to understand the symbolic representations of the platinum space and pampa composed of political and cultural borders that unfold from the colonial period to the present day. Therefore, we discuss in this paper the milonga, its origin in the platinum region, its relationship to daily life on the frontier and the identity of the contemporary border from reports, research in historical archives and bibliographies.
