SUMMARY OF THE ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL PROFILE

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Moses Muhumuza was trained as a graduate teacher by profession specializing in Biology and Chemistry teaching subjects. He eventually advanced his career to focus on Biological Sciences. He has a Masters of Science Degree in Biology specializing in Natural Resource Management, and a PhD in Animal, Plant, and Environmental Sciences focusing on social aspects of rural communities neighboring protected areas in an African context. He also has certificates in project planning and management, project monitoring and evaluation, data analysis and various short course trainings.

His expertise stretches across a wider spectrum in both the natural and social sciences. By virtue of teaching at secondary school and university levels, he has engaged in a variety of teaching and research methodologies and accumulated experience in developing self-study materials, writing competitive research proposals and informative research reports. He currently lectures introductory and advanced courses in Biological Sciences, Social science for Conservation, Science education, Climate Change, and Research Methods at Mountains of the Moon University. He has supervised to completion over 30 students’ research projects in sciences and liberal arts both at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Moses has developed, won and conducted various research projects as an academic on university assignments, personal interest, and as a freelance consultant. As a freelance consultant, he has undertaken research and produced technical reports in natural science, social science and anthropology. Over thirty publications emerging from research projects have been published in form of books, book chapters, monographs, scholarly journal articles, conference proceedings and technical reports.

Moses is a member of various professional bodies and organizations, a peer reviewer of at least 10 international academic journals, and the Chief Editor of the Rwenzori Journal. He is also co-founded the Centre for Action and Applied Research for Development (CAARD) (U) Limited (www.caard.co.ug) which is a publishing company and Universal Institute of Research and Innovations (www.uniri.ac.ug) which supports individuals and organizations in areas of research, monitoring and evaluation and development of online and physical institutional systems.

6 RECENT AND CURRENT RESEARCH PROJECTS (8 projects)

1. Community Engagement for Development project- VLIR-IUC Programme: Moses Muhumuza is the leader of the Research for community development project (Project 1) under the VLIR-IUC Programme. The programme is an inter university cooperation between Mountains of the Moon University and Universities in Belgium.

2. Community Engagement for Development project- VLIR-IUCProgramme: Moses Muhumuza is the leader of the Transversal institutional strengthening project (Project 2) under the VLIR-IUC Programme. The programme is an inter university cooperation between Mountains of the Moon University and Universities in Belgium. 3. Flemish project for water conservation: Moses Muhumuza is a researcher in the Flemish project for Water conservation in the Rwenzoriri region. The Project is

aimed at providing local communities neighboring the Mpanga river catchment with appropriate technologies that shall facilitate proper utilization and conservation of water resources. 4. AFROMISON project: Moses Muhumuza is a researcher in the AFROMAISON international project in the Rwenzori Mountains/ Albertine Rift case study. This is a European Union funded project that aims at developing a tool box that shall facilitate integrated natural resource management in the Rwenzori Region. 5. Landslide intervention project. Moses Muhumuza is a team leader for the Landslide Intervention Group (LIG). The landslide intervention group is a distinguished group in the Rwenzori region by its desire and passion for environment and biodiversity conservation. The team was formed in March 2010 by members of staff of Mountains of the Moon University who were previously engaged in environmental conservation works and were concerned about the landslide phenomena that had occurred in various hilly areas of Uganda. Although the initial proposal for the formation of a landslide intervention group was conceived by a team of Mountain of the Moon University lecturers, other interested parties from within and outside the Rwenzori region have joined the team. 6. VLRI/IUC Project. Moses Muhumuza is involved in the VLRI/ IUC project as a project researcher and coordinates the process of selecting PhD and Masters research students. The project focuses on Rwenzori region community empowerment for socio-economic development though sustainable use of natural resources. 7. APPEAR Project. Moses Muhumuza is involved in the APPEAR project (2016 - 2019) as the coordinator of the project and specifically responsible for the dissemination work package. The project aims at developing a participatory and applied curriculum in Agro-ecology at Mountains of the Moon University. 8. Peace project for the Rwenzori. Moses Muhumuza is involved in the Peace project for the Rwenzori as a leader researcher. The project aims at identifying the underlying causes of the current conflicts in the Rwenzori region in order to propose a context based and informed peace building strategy.
