On Thursday 9th December 2010, Her Majesty the Queen visited St Mary & St Pancras, Somers Town and their federated school Emmanuel, West , joined the celebraons. The Queen was greeted by members of the public and three local primary schools, while their brass band played a fanfare as well as being introduced to Karen Thomas, Mayor of Camden; Liz Wolverson, LDBS; Alice Aharon, Head of School and Sheila McCalla-Gordon, Execuve Headteacher. The Queen toured the school seeing Y4 doing History, Y5 learning French (with which she was very impressed as a fluent French speaker), Y2 doing Art and the Foundaon Stage. She was interested to hear about the school community and met many members of staff, children, parent volunteers and governors. In 2011 the King James Bible celebrates its 400 year anniversary. It is being read by celebries and is being videoed for YouTube and The Queen asked two children to read the passageon Navies from Luke 2. Becky Cho and AJ LeMaitre (Y6) read beaufully for the Queen and this was broadcast in The Queen’s Christmas Message on Christmas Day. The brass band, the school choir and dancers and all the junior children from Emmanuel and St Mary & St Pancras performed before the Queen who unveiled a plaque, signed the guest book and was presented with a gorgeous bouquet of handmade flowers by the Y1 class.

It was a wonderful visit and words cannot explain the long-lasng impact it has had on the school and local community.

NEW BUILDING FOR A NEW SCHOOL YEAR... Since September 2010, students at Hackney Free and Parochial Secondary School have enjoyed learning in a brand new building. The School, which celebrated record GCSE results in the summer, is undergoing a £17 million rebuild on its current site, with all construcon work due to be finished by the end of 2011. The Watson Building, named aer Joshua Watson, one of the founders of the Naonal Society, opened its doors to students and staff on the first day of term. Meg Hillier, MP for Hackney South and , became the first VIP visitor to the Watson Building. where she was met by Head Prefects Hannah Oladugba and Ferdos Daqiq who gave her a guided tour of the building, which includes state of the art classrooms for subjects including Maths, Science, English, Art, Technology, ICT and Humanies and an environmental Brown Roof. The second phase of the school’s new building, which will include a large sports hall and acvies studio, new canteen and dining area and specialist facilies for the teaching of music and drama, will be ready next September.

St Mahew’s, Yiewsley recently celebrated Harvest but also celebrated a new beginning for part of the school. The school was very pleased to welcome Revd Dr Howard Worsley on 29th September 2010, who opened the new front entrance to the school and led worship in Church for Harvest. St Mahew’s had been planning this building work for 10 years, lack of funding has previously prevented them from undertaking this work. The once small corridor leading onto the main office has now been replaced by a modern entrance hall which will serve the school community and provide a beer service for parents and has significantly improved the security of the school. WATCH OUT SPURS AND ARSENAL - we are up for a challenge!... St Paul’s and All Hallows’ Infant and Junior boys are Haringey primary school football champions aer spending 2 long days in October playing against all the other schools in Haringey. They will now go on to represent Haringey for any future football matches against other boroughs. The boys won 2 sets of medals and a shield. The girls were also successful and came 4th out of all the schools in Haringey and also received medals. In October Bishop Ramsey Secondary, Ruislip was one of only five schools in the country, to win the chance to see an exclusive screening of a brand new film, ‘Africa United.’ Students filled Screen 4 at the Odeon, Uxbridge to see the film before it went on general release. Africa United tells the extraordinary story of three Rwandan children and their bid to achieve their ulmate dream – to take part in the opening ceremony of the 2010 Football World Cup in Johannesburg. The film was enjoyed by all the students: ”It was funny but also sad”, “I really enjoyed it”, “9 ½ out of 10” said Rebekah, Daisy and Jane (Y7), and Tina (Y13) commented, “I found the film very realisc and it provoked a lot of emoon. I would recommend it, as its main focus is relevant to contemporary society. 125TH ANNIVERSARY... was celebrated from 1–7th November 2010 by the children and staff of St Andrew & St Francis, Willesden. Staff and pupils were encouraged to wear Victorian costumes and many classrooms were set out in Victorian style with rows facing the board. Children were taught many of their lessons during the week in the style of the 1800s, taking part in rote-style spelling, handwring and mes-tables lessons. Anyone who misbehaved, or made a mistake were under threat of being sent to see the Headteacher or Deputy Headteacher for punishment. Along with the old-fashioned 3Rs, the children had many opportunies to sample the sort of fun available to children who may have aended the school on its opening days with a visit from a Punch & Judy performer; a travelling fairground came to school and the children were able to take part in hoopla throwing, coconut shies and to ride on a carousel . The school doors were thrown open to the local community and former school pupils and staff joined in a Victorian tea-party and on the final aernoon the various cra-compeons were judged. The week was rounded off on Sunday 7th November when parents and staff joined the congregaon of St. Andrew’s Church, Willesden in their celebraon mass led by Fr. Colin Paerson, Parish Priest and Vice- Chair of the school’s Governing Body and the sermon was delivered by Dr Howard Worsley, former Director of Educaon for the London Diocesan Board for Schools.

LDBS Schools Newsletter Issue 14 ~ January 2011 page 9 of 11 ST CECILA CONCERT... Over 100, Bishop Ramsey, Ruislip students took part in the St Cecilia Concert in November. The annual concert commemorates the patron saint of musicians and Church music. The concert catered for all tastes from ballet to Monty Python including: classical, jazz and modern, instrumental and choral music. The evening opened with the upliing March from Verdi’s Aida and Ferdinand Harold’s Clog Dance from the ballet La Fille Mal Gardee. The audience were transported to the hey day of film musicals when the concert band played ‘Pung on the Ritz’ to end the first half of the evening. KICKING IT... This term 9, St Mary’s High, Hendon Y10 Design students (Pedro,Claudio, Neo, Laura, Chelsea, Tolu, Irini, Roshni and Cesar) were specially selected to take part in the Kickers Design Challenge held by the internaonal ‘Pentland Group’. Students aended a briefing session, along with ten other schools from Barnet, and were asked to create a new ‘Kicker’ shoe design for the company, the winning design would go on to be manufactured. The students were split into two groups and each group had to create the following: consumer A2 display board; mood board of ideas; final design for the new shoe .
