Martedì 2 ottobre , a Bologna , Tom Leighton , ideatore di una rivoluzionaria soluzione per eliminare il problema della congestione del traffico dati sul web, riceverà il Marconi Prize 2018 . Assegnato dalla Marconi Society , il Marconi Prize è il più prestigioso premio a livello mondiale nel campo dell’Information and Communication Technology (ICT) e può essere accostato, per l’importanza e per la fama degli scienziati ai quali è stato conferito (ad esempio i fondatori di Google Larry Page e Sergey Brin o il padre del web Tim Berners-Lee), a un Premio Nobel. La cerimonia di consegna è ospitata ogni anno in sedi diverse in tutto il mondo, ma ciclicamente torna a Bologna, la città che ha dato i natali a quel Guglielmo Marconi – inventore della radio e padre delle moderne telecomunicazioni – a cui il premio è intitolato. E in questi casi ad organizzare l’evento è la Fondazione Guglielmo Marconi , l’istituzione con sede a Villa Griffone – storica dimora di Guglielmo Marconi, a pochi chilometri da Bologna – che si occupa, insieme anche all’ Università di Bologna , di promuovere la ricerca nel campo delle telecomunicazioni e la diffusione dell'attività scientifica di Marconi, sotto la presidenza del prof. Gabriele Falciasecca . Proprio a Villa Griffone, nella mattinata di martedì 2 ottobre, si terrà il 2018 Marconi Society Symposium . Studiosi, innovatori e imprenditori leader nel campo delle ICT si incontrano per affrontare le grandi emergenze che agitano la rete : i social network utilizzati come arma per influenzare opinioni e (forse) elezioni, il delicato tema della privacy e della gestione dei dati personali, i cyber attacchi che minacciano la sicurezza di sistemi finanziari, infrastrutture, intere nazioni. CHI È TOM LEIGHTON Cofondatore e oggi CEO di Akamai Technologies , una delle più grandi e importanti aziende al mondo per la distribuzione dei contenuti online (ma anche per i servizi di cloud computing e per la cyber security ), Tom Leighton ha in realtà un passato da accademico. A metà degli anni ’90 era un professore al MIT di Boston e si occupava di matematica applicata ai problemi dell’informatica. È qui che nel 1995, su impulso del collega Tim Berners-Lee (l’inventore del World Wide Web), inizia a pensare ad un sistema in grado di organizzare in modo efficace la distribuzione dei pacchetti di contenuti online, evitando così il pericolo di congestione della rete internet . Una sfida a cui lavora insieme ad uno dei suoi studenti più brillanti, Danny Lewin . Dopo due anni di ricerche, gli sforzi di Leighton e Lewin vengono premiati: riescono a mettere a punto un metodo innovativo basato sui Content Delivery Network (CDN) – reti di server che duplicano i contenuti online – grazie al quale risolvere le difficoltà di gestione del traffico dati sul web. Il problema ora era convincere il mondo che quel sistema poteva funzionare. Per farlo, nel 1998, i due – pur senza alcuna esperienza imprenditoriale – decidono di fondare una società – che chiamano Akamai – con l’obiettivo di fornire a parti terze il proprio servizio di content delivery. Il successo arriva nel giro di pochi mesi: nel 1999 Akamai viene quotata in borsa, cresce esponenzialmente e dimostra di essere una realtà fondata su basi più che solide. Tanto che, pur con qualche difficoltà, nel 2000 riesce a sopravvivere al terremoto generato dall’esplosione della bolla speculativa delle dot-com. Denny Lewin, l’ex studente di Leighton che con lui aveva fondato la società, è uno dei passeggeri dell’aereo che si schianta sulla Torre Nord del Word Trade Center di New York. Un dramma che, per una tragica ironia della sorte, si rivela anche il test perfetto per gli studi su cui Lewin si era impegnato per anni . Quel giorno e nei giorni successivi, infatti, centinaia di milioni di persone si collegano online per seguire le notizie e cercare informazioni: se l’impalcatura di internet, all’epoca ancora piuttosto fragile, riesce a reggere senza eccessivi problemi l’impatto di quelle giornate, il merito è anche dei sistemi di Content Delivery Network (CDN) messi a punto da Tom Leighton e Denny Lewin. Da allora, Akamai ha continuato a crescere, arrivando a gestire e smistare ogni giorno migliaia di miliardi di richieste di contenuti online . E da quando, nel 2013, Tom Leighton ha assunto il ruolo di CEO, la società ha ampliato ulteriormente i suoi orizzonti, fino a diventare una delle piattaforme di cloud computing e cyber security più importanti al mondo. L’assegnazione a Tom Leighton del Marconi Prize consacra questa sua “ doppia identità ”: da un lato uno dei migliori computer scientists al mondo e dall’altro uno degli imprenditori e CEO di maggior successo a livello globale . “È un onore ricevere questo riconoscimento dalla Marconi Society”, dice Leighton. “Non solo per me, ma anche per Danny Lewin, che con me ha creato Akamai, e per tutte le persone che nel corso di oltre vent’anni hanno lavorato duramente con l’obiettivo di applicare la nostra tecnologia e rendere internet un luogo sempre più sicuro e affidabile”. Tom Leighton devolverà i 100.000 dollari assegnati con il Marconi Prize alla Akamai Foundation , il cui obiettivo è sostenere giovani studentesse e studenti tra i 4 e i 12 anni che si dimostrano particolarmente brillanti in matematica e incoraggiare così la prossima generazione di innovatori in campo tecnologico. Nel Selection Advisory Committee e nel Board of Directors della Marconi Society è incluso anche un membro indicato dalla Fondazione Marconi di Bologna , che quindi partecipa attivamente all’assegnazione del premio. Tra i Marconi Fellow – coloro che negli anni hanno ricevuto il Marconi Prize – ci sono innovatori come gli inventori di Google Larry Page e Sergey Brin (2004), il padre del web Tim Berners-Lee (2002), i pionieri di internet, ideatori dei protocolli TCP/IP, Bob Kahn (1994) e Vint Cerf (1998), l’ideatore del primo microprocessore Federico Faggin (1988), il creatore di Arpanet, la rete da cui ebbe origine internet, Paul Baran (1991), il pioniere delle fibre ottiche Charles Kuen Kao (1985), l’inventore del primo telefono cellulare portatile Martin Cooper (2013), lo scrittore, divulgatore e ideatore delle comunicazioni satellitari Arthur C. Clarke (1982). Al premio principale, inoltre, è affiancato lo Young Scholars Award , assegnato ogni anno a quattro ricercatori under 27 che, per le loro capacità ingegneristiche e di ricerca, mostrano di avere le potenzialità per creare importanti progressi in ambito scientifico e tecnologico. I quattro Young Scholars 2018 sono: Di Che (Nokia Bell Labs), Qurrat-Ul-Ain Nadeem (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology - KAUST), Rajalakshmi Nandakumar (University of Washington) e Ding Nie (Apple). A loro sarà dedicato lo Young Scholars Symposium , in programma lunedì 1 ottobre all’ Accademia delle Scienze di Bologna : un incontro pensato per immaginare il futuro delle telecomunicazioni e capire come continuare ad ampliare il numero di persone connesse in rete nel mondo.     DR BRADFORD PARKINSON TO RECEIVE THE 2016 MARCONI PRIZE Dr. Bradford Parkinson, a Stanford professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics, will receive the 2016 Marconi Prize, a pinnacle honour in the field of information and communication science. This was reported by the Marconi Society in recent weeks. The $100,000 prize, given annually, recognizes major advances in the field which benefit humanity. Parkinson’s contributions to the development of GPS helped create a vast global utility that provides positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) information to the world and is a vital part of today’s global information infrastructure. GPS has been transformative in virtually every aspect of how people work and live, and in their use of time and spatial information. But its development was very nearly derailed and the (US) Air Force would have abandoned its development had they not been forced to fund it. Despite their opposition, they ended up selecting someone to lead the project who was uniquely qualified to make it a success. Tkach, research partners for more than two decades, have been awarded the 2009 Marconi Fellowship and Prize for their research into optical fiber nonlinearities and their development of novel mitigation techniques that vastly increased the transmission speed and capacity of optical fiber communications systems. The duo will receive the award October 9th at the annual Marconi Awards Dinner at the Palazzo Re Enzo in Bologna, Italy. The dinner and the preceding two-day Marconi Symposium are being hosted by the Bologna-based Fondazione Guglielmo Marconi. The Marconi Society, established in 1975, annually recognizes a living scientist whose work in the field of communications and information technology advances the social, economic and cultural improvement of all humanity. Recent winners have included Professor David Payne of the University of Southampton in the UK, another optical fiber pioneer who led the development of the erbium-doped optical fiber amplifier; Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page; MIT Professor Ron Rivest, co-inventor of RSA encryption; Stanford Professor John Cioffi, the inventor of modern high speed modems that enabled DSL; and French Professor Claude Berrou, whose discovery of turbo codes led to important advances in mobile telephony, satellite and radio communications.
