Driving from Peja through Rugova Gorge is excit- ing in itself: rocky mountains, tunnels, a narrow road and won- derful sightseeing. But of course, for your own safety, all of this needs to be accompanied with steady hands on the wheel and total concentration on the road. After some 20 km of driving, one reaches a mountain road (still passable in a normal pas- senger vehicle), which continues for about 5 km to the village of Bogaj. On arrival one can notice a number of small chalets and motel-like restaurants, which Photo by Asdren Rrahmani Rrahmani Asdren by Photo offer good prices for a night’s stay, around 22 euros including dinner. After parking your vehicle you get to start climbing the moun- tain. The real story begins here, as enchanting views open up on all four sides. The mountain is ringed by greenery from many different trees, though most are pine. The local people are extremely hospitable and friendly. They may not speak a word of English, but they’ll do what they can to help you on your way. It takes about an hour to climb throughout the Bogaj hills but the terrain is pretty safe. At the top of the hill one can see all the mountains surrounding Rugova Gorge and the rest of the range that divides Kosovo, Montenegro and Albania. In Albanian tradition, you don’t need to know someone personally in order to express your condolences and visit a family in which a death has occurred. I met Uke Kurtaj, the man’s father, sitting on a wooden bench outside the family cabin. I could see the grief in his eyes, the pain from the loss of his son evident just at first glance. He made me sit next to him, gave me a hug and started asking the ritual questions: how my family was, where I came from and how I ended up there.
