SCHOLARSHIP IN HONOR OF GENERAL CARL A. SPAATZ U.S. AIR FORCE General Carl A. Spaatz The story of the life of General Carl A. over Los Angeles and vicinity January 1-7, 1929, Spaatz is the story of military aviation in keeping the plane aloft a record total of 150 hours, the United States. 50 minutes and 15 seconds, and was awarded the T Distinguished Flying Cross. Carl Spaatz was born June 28, 1891, in Boyertown, Pennsylvania. Colonel Gordon Cooper, US Air Force Leroy Gordon
Colonel Gordon Cooper, U.S. Air Force Leroy Gordon "Gordo" Cooper Jr. was an American aerospace engineer, U.S. Air Force pilot, test pilot, and one of the seven original astronauts in Project Mercury, the first manned space program of the U.S. Cooper piloted the longest and final Mercury spaceflight in 1963. He was the first American to sleep in space during that 34-hour mission and was the last American to be launched alone to conduct an entirely solo orbital mission. In 1965, Cooper flew as Command Pilot of Gemini 5. Early life and education: Cooper was born on 6 March 1927 in Shawnee, OK to Leroy Gordon Cooper Sr. (Colonel, USAF, Ret.) and Hattie Lee Cooper. He was active in the Boy Scouts where he achieved its second highest rank, Life Scout. Cooper attended Jefferson Elementary School and Shawnee High School and was involved in football and track. He moved to Murray, KY about two months before graduating with his class in 1945 when his father, Leroy Cooper Sr., a World War I veteran, was called back into service. He graduated from Murray High School in 1945. Cooper married his first wife Trudy B. Olson (1927– 1994) in 1947. She was a Seattle native and flight instructor where he was training. Together, they had two daughters: Camala and Janita Lee. The couple divorced in 1971. Cooper married Suzan Taylor in 1972. Together, they had two daughters: Elizabeth and Colleen. The couple remained married until his death in 2004. After he learned that the Army and Navy flying schools were not taking any candidates the year he graduated from high school, he decided to enlist in the Marine Corps. -

Edwin C. Musick Collection History of Aviation Collection Biographical Sketch Born: St. Louis, Missouri 1894 Died: Near Pago Pago, Samoa 1938 Survey flight to New Zealand Education: Incomplete formal education in a Los Angeles high school Aviation Background: January, exposed to aviation at the Dominguez Field 1910 air races, Los Angeles, CA. With Arthur C. Burns, Harry Reynolds, and others 1912 built an airplane (note Burns photos) that flew nine feet off the ground and pancaked. Built another airplane that Reynolds crashed. 1913 Took a course at Schiller Flying School consisting of lectures, followed by taxiing and eventually flying in a single seat Curtiss Pusher. The trio purchased a used plane to build up time. 1914. Musick worked as mechanic for exhibition fliers 1915 in Venice, California, renting Schiller’s airplane for practice. Became exhibition flier for several months; then became 1915-16 instructor at Venice in Summer of 1916. Served as civilian instructor in the Army Air Corps, 1917 North Island San Diego; transferred to Call Field, Wichita Falls, Texas. Commissioned as Lieutenant in the Marine Corps and 1918 assigned to Miami, Florida; remained in service after the Armistice. In the Fall released from Marine Corps to join 1919-20 Plane and Motor Corporation, Keyport, New Jersey. Flew F5-L’s from Miami to Havana. May 14, Inaugurated New New-Atlantic City airline 1921 in F5-L’s. Because the airline attracted few passengers, Musick was sent on goodwill flights around the Great Lakes, down the Mississippi, and around the Gulf Coast. For the 1921-22 season, Musick returned to the Miami-Havana run. -

Daedalians gather for 2019 annual meeting The 2019 annual meeting started with a Commander’s Reception the evening before and was hosted by the staff at Daedalian Headquarters. Many out-of-town Daedalians, along with local members, enjoyed the perfect weather, tasty food and great camaraderie. The official meeting began Friday after an hour of introductions and networking over coffee. General Kehoe kept the presenters on task and a great deal of information was covered. Overall, the Order of Daedalians is growing its presence and working in a direction that keeps us relevant to active services. The Journal of the Orders and Medals Society of America The red centerline on the white band symbolizes the courage of the astronauts in the nation’s manned space program and the fire and power of the rockets that carry the astronauts through the earth’s atmosphere. The light blue represents the earth’s atmosphere and is the same color as the chief of the shield of the U.S. coat-of-arms, which appears on the President’s flag. The dark blue reflects the hostile environment of space, while the gold edges of the ribbon denote success and accomplishment. Red, white, and blue are also the U.S. national colors. NASA obtained its initial stock of twelve medals in April 1970 through the Institute of Heraldry, which had contracted the Medallic Art Company of New York to produce the medals at a total cost of ten thousand dollars. In August 1990, NASA contracted directly with His Lordship Industries for the production of 19 full-size medals, 13 miniature medals, 25 lapel badges, and a number of rosettes and ribbon bars. To date, only twelve astronauts have received this pres- tigious award. They are: Neil A. Armstrong (presented by President Carter on 1 October 1979) Neil Armstrong was among the nine members of astro- naut Group 2 selected by NASA in September 1962. He would later command the Gemini 8 mission and the Apollo 11 mission to the moon, Armstrong was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio, on 5 August 1930. He graduated from Purdue University and subse- Reverse of the CSMoH pendant and neck ribbon. -

Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg April 30, 1948–June 29, 1953 Portrait by Francis Henry Beaugureau OYT S. VANDENBERG was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on January 24, 1899. His father, William Collins Vandenberg, was president of a bookbinding company. HHis uncle, Arthur H. Vandenberg, went from newspaper publishing in Grand Rapids to prominence as a Republican member of the U.S. Senate. His family moved to Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1910 and Hoyt participated in the gamut of high school sports—baseball, football, hockey, golf, and track. He had an avid interest in scouting, ultimately becoming an Eagle Scout. His experience at the Plattsburg Junior Camp at Plum Island, New York—a sort of military school for the wealthy—in the summer of 1916 instilled a desire for a military career. Political connections and a year of hard work at Columbian Preparatory School in Washington, D.C., earned him an appointment to West Point, where he graduated and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Air Service in 1923. After completing the Primary Flying School at Brooks Field, Texas, in 1923 and Advanced Flying School at Kelly Field, Texas, the next year, he received his first assignment with the Third Attack Group at Kelly Field and assumed command of the 90th Attack Squadron. In Texas he married Gladys Rose, whom he had met as a cadet. They had two chil- dren. In 1927 he became an instructor at the Air Corps Primary Flying School at March Field, California. From 1929 to 1931 Vandenberg was with the 6th Pursuit Squadron at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, where he served as squadron commander for most of that period.
