National Aeronautic Association FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: David Ivey, 703-527-0226 E-Mail: [email protected] SpaceShipOne Team Named 2004 Collier Trophy Winner Arlington, VA – SpaceShipOne, the first-ever privately financed, manned spacecraft has won the prestigious Robert J. Collier Trophy Monday, taking its place alongside the greatest advances in aviation history. The Collier Trophy has been awarded each year since 1911 by the National Aeronautic Association “for the greatest achievement in aviation in America…” SpaceshipOne went into space for the first time on June 21, 2004, when Mike Melvill piloted the craft 100 kilometers above the Earth’s surface, an altitude considered to be the beginning of space. In the fall of last year, SS1 made a pair of return trips to space within a week of each other to earn the $10 million Ansari X-Prize, given to the first team to prove that civilian manned spaceflight is feasible. The amazing vehicle was designed and built by a small firm in Mojave, California, Scaled Composites, LLC, which was founded in 1982 by aircraft designer Burt Rutan. The cost of the project, about $26 million, was covered by investor Paul G. Allen, the co-founder of Microsoft. Capable of carrying a pilot and two passengers to space, SS1 is made primarily of graphite and epoxy. It reaches space much like a rocket would, traveling straight up at many times the speed of sound after being released from its carrier ship, White Knight. It featured the revolutionary idea of a “carefree” re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere, by reconfiguring its wings, which are then moved back into position to allow the pilot to glide the craft back to Earth. -

Regional geologic experts from the U.S. Geological Survey and other governmental organizations and universities s also played vital roles in these exercises. NeilA. Armstrong Director Institute of Engineering & Medicine University of Cincinnati Neil A. Armstrong is the Director of the Institute of Engineering and Medicine at the University of Cincinnati. The Institute is a research organization concerned with interdisciplinary approaches to problem solving in a variety of engineering and medical- areas. Professor Armstrong also teaches at the university, primarily in the School of Aerospace Engineering. As a naval aviator, he flew 78 combat missi ons during the Korean action. As a civilian, Professor Armstrong served the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and its predecessor agency, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, for 17 years, as engineer, test pilot, astronaut and administrator. As a test pilot at NASA's flight Research Center at Edwards, California, he was a project pilot on many pioneering high speed aircraft, including the well known 4000 mph X-IS. He has flown over 200 different models of aircraft including jets, rockets, helicopters and gliders. Professor Armstrong transferred to astronaut status in 1962. He was assigned as a command pilot for the Gemini 8 mission. Gemini 8 was launched on March 16, 1966, and Armstrong performed the first successful docking of two vehicles in space. As spacecraft commander for Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing mission, Armstrong gained the distinction of being the first man to land a craft on the moon and the first to step on its surface. Professor Armstrong subsequently held the position of Deputy Associate Administrator for Aeronautics, Office of Advanced Research and Technology, NASA Headquarters, Washington, D. C. In this position, he was responsible for the coordination and management of overall NASA research and technology work related to aeronautics. -

National Aeronautic Association FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: David Ivey, 703-527-0226 February 16, 2006 ECLIPSE AVIATION WINS 2005 COLLIER TROPHY Eclipse Aviation Corporation has won the 2005 Robert J. Collier Trophy "for the greatest achievement in aeronautics or astronautics in America.” The 95 year-old trophy, aviation’s most prestigious award, will be presented to the company “for leadership, innovation, and the advancement of general aviation” in the production of very light jets, specifically, the Eclipse 500. Eclipse joins past winners of the trophy including Orville Wright, Howard Hughes, Chuck Yeager, Scott Crossfield, the crew of Apollo 11, and SpaceShipOne. The award has been administered by the National Aeronautic Association (NAA) since 1911. Announcing the 2005 winner, NAA President and CEO David Ivey said the selection committee’s criteria included recognition of the rich heritage of the Collier Trophy, and “the spirit of entrepreneurship, technical innovation, and the impact on American aviation,” exemplified by the Eclipse 500. Led by Eclipse’s founder, president and CEO Vern Raburn, Eclipse is applying innovations created in the technology industry to drive down cost, increase performance, improve safety, and spur a new type of air travel—the air taxi. Gemini & Apollo Astronaut, BGEN, USAF, Ret, Test Pilot, and Author Dies at 90 The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF) is saddened to report the loss of space man Michael Collins BGEN, USAF, Ret., and NASA astronaut who has passed away on April 28, 2021 at the age of 90; he was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Pat and his son Michael and is survived by their daughters Kate and Ann and many grandchildren. Collins is best known for being one of the crew of Apollo 11, the first manned mission to land humans on the moon. Michael Collins was born in Rome, Italy on October 31, 1930. In 1952 he graduated from West Point (same class as future fellow astronaut, Ed White) with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He joined the U.S. Air Force and was assigned to the 21st Fighter-Bomber Wing at George AFB in California. He subsequently moved to Europe when they relocated to Chaumont-Semoutiers AFB in France. Once during a test flight, he was forced to eject from an F-86 after a fire started behind the cockpit; he was safely rescued and returned to Chaumont. He was accepted into the USAF Experimental Flight Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base in California. In 1960 he became a member of Class 60C which included future astronauts Frank Borman, Jim Irwin, and Tom Stafford. His inspiration to become an astronaut was the Mercury Atlas 6 flight of John Glenn and with this inspiration, he applied to NASA. In 1963 he was selected in the third group of NASA astronauts. -

5 24,132 6 9 NASA X-15 PROGRAM By: T.D. Barnes - NASA Contractor - 1960s NASA contractors for the X-15 program were Bendix Field Engineering followed by Unitec, Inc. The NASA High Range Tracking stations were located at Ely and Beatty Nevada with main control being at Dryden/Edwards AFB in California. Personnel at the tracking stations consisted of a Station Manager, a Technical Advisor, and field engineers for the Mod-2 Radar, Data Transmission System, Communications, Telemetry, and Plant Maintenance/Generators. NASA had a site monitor at each tracking station to monitor our contractor operations. Though supporting flights of the X-15 was their main objective, they also participated in flights of the XB-70, the three Lifting Bodies, experimental Lunar Landing vehicles, and an occasional A-12/YF-12/SR-71 Blackbird flight. On mission days a NASA van picked up each member of the crew at their residence for the 4:20 a.m. trip to the tracking station 18 miles North of Beatty on the Tonopah Highway. Upon arrival each performed preflight calibrations and setup of their various systems. The liftoff of the B-52, with the X-15 tucked beneath its wing, seldom occurred after 9:00 a.m. due to the heat effect of the Mojave Desert making it difficult for the planes to acquire altitude. At approximately 0800 hours two pilots from Dryden would proceed uprange to evaluate the condition of the dry lake beds in the event of an emergency landing of the X-15 (always buzzing our station on the way up and back). -

Of the original cadre, Paul Calle, an illustrator of science fiction book covers, joined Robert McCall and six others and began to sketch. As commissioned artists they received $800 and access to draw a blossoming manned space program. Over the years the NASA Art Program would include the works of pop artist Andy Warhol, photographer Annie Leibovitz, and American illustrator Norman Rockwell. Paul Calle remained associated with NASA from Mercury through Gemini, Apollo, and the Space Shuttle. Over the years, he helped guide his son Chris to become a serious artist in his own right. Paul would design over 50 stamps for the Post Office Department and the US Postal Service including the Gemini space twins in 1967 and the First Man on the Moon issue of 1969. To beat the Soviets in putting a man in space, the US Air Force selected nine pilots Chris collaborated with his father on two space stamps to celebrate the 25th for Man In Space Soonest (MISS). -

Kennedy May 25, 1961 Celebrate Apollo Exploring The Moon, Discovering Earth Less than five months into his new administration, on May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy, announced the dramatic and ambitious goal of sending an American safely to the moon before the end of the decade. Coming just three weeks after Mercury astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American in space, Kennedy’s bold challenge that historic spring day set the nation on a journey unparalleled in human history. Just eight years later, on July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong stepped out of the lunar module, taking “one small step” in the Sea of Tranquility, thus achieving “one giant leap for mankind,” and demonstrating to the world that the collective will of the nation was strong enough to overcome any obstacle. It was an achievement that would be repeated five other times between 1969 and 1972. By the time the Apollo 17 mission ended, 12 astronauts had explored the surface of the moon, and the collective contributions of hundreds of thousands of engineers, scientists, astronauts and employees of NASA served to inspire our nation and the world.
