Laub, Delta State University Based on papers presented at a 2012 conference, Patrice Arnaud and Fabien Théofilakis have assembled a broad, provocative analysis of SS police forces in Belgium, France, and Greece during the Second World War. Contributions by editors and nine scholars analyze the personnel, behavior, and goals of SS police forces in a comparative study designed to identify common trends and explain unique features of police regimes across Western Europe. Building on research pioneered by Hans Mommsen, Gerhard Paul and Klaus-Michael Mallmann [1], contributors highlight manpower shortages that forced SS police forces to rely on local collaborators to maintain order, suppress resistance activity, and pursue the racial goals of the Nazi regime. Undermanned and loosely supervised by superiors in Athens, Brussels, Paris, and Berlin, members of the Gestapo (Geheime Staatspolizei or secret state police), Kripo (Kriminalpolizei or criminal police), SD (Sicherheitsdienst or SS security service), and Sipo (Sicherheitspolizei or security police) employed a range of methods to recruit local collaborators and cooperate with neighboring German agencies such as the German army, Fritz Sauckel's labor organization, and the GFP (Geheime Feldpolizei or secret military police). Police forces pursued different goals in, for example, the Ardennes, Lorraine, Antwerp, and Liège, but authors attribute regional variations to geography, Nazi racial ideology, the need to recruit local collaborators, and the incidence of resistance activity.

    Acteurs de la répression et dispositifs répressifs Lexique indicatif Organismes et administrations MBF (Militärbefehlshaber in Frankreich) : commandement militaire en France installé à Paris (hôtel Majestic). Le MBF est une sorte de gouverneur militaire qui dispose du monopole du pouvoir exécutif jusqu’en juin 1942, date à laquelle il cède ses pouvoirs à la Sipo-SD. Il est responsable du « maintien de l’ordre et de la sécurité » et son pouvoir s’étend partiellement à la zone sud après novembre 1942. Il utilise les services de la Feldgendarmerie et de la GFP (Geheime Feldpolizei). MBB (Militärbefehlshaber in Belgien und Nordfrankreich) : commandement militaire pour la Belgique et le nord de la France (Nord et Pas-de-Calais), installé à Bruxelles. Le MBB accorde une large autonomie à un commandement militaire spécifique aux deux départements français, implanté à Lille, l’OFK 670 (Oberfeldkommandantur 670). RSHA (Reichsicherheitshauthampt) : office central de sécurité du Reich dirigé par Heydrich puis par Kaltenbrünner, dont dépend la Sipo-SD et donc la Gestapo. En France, les services du RSHA sont dirigés, à partir de 1942, par Helmut Knochen, lui-même dirigé par un chef supérieur, le SS Karl Oberg.     Auxiliary Police Units in the Occupied Soviet Union, 1941-43: A Case Study of the Holocaust in Gomel, Belarus “…the corpses lay with their faces on the dirt. Hands on their heads. One woman lay in a way that showed she had been kneeling, and she fell over her baby. There were four identifiable corpses that revealed a bloody wound on their heads. It was established that they were not old bullet wounds, but it was clear that they and the baby had been murdered; with what extraneous object remains unclear. It was clear that people had been beaten with heavy objects and had then been (disorderly dumped) in a hole. One boy had clearly been buried alive. The corpses were in underwear, without clothes.” 1 This statement, given by Ivan Abramovich on January 16, 1944, was part of the ‘Soviet Extraordinary State Commission to Investigate Fascist Crimes Committed by the Invaders and their Accomplices on Soviet Territory’ during an investigation of German crimes in Gomel, Belorussia. The Soviet regime conducted similar investigations and hearings throughout areas formerly occupied by the Germans in an effort to understand precisely what horrors had occurred beyond the front lines. As the investigations progressed, they learned that the scope of the crimes was tremendously large. Even more disturbing, however, was the discovery that locals across Lithuania, Belorussia and Ukraine were deeply implicated, principally through service in auxiliary police units that openly collaborated with the German forces and participated in atrocities at almost every level.
