View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Apollo British Domestic Security Policy and Communist Subversion: 1945-1964 William Styles Corpus Christi College, University of Cambridge September 2016 This dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy William Styles British Domestic Security Policy and Communist Subversion: 1945-1964 This thesis is concerned with an analysis of British governmental attitudes and responses to communism in the United Kingdom during the early years of the Cold War, from the election of the Attlee government in July 1945 up until the election of the Wilson government in October 1964. Until recently the topic has been difficult to assess accurately, due to the scarcity of available original source material. However, as a result of multiple declassifications of both Cabinet Office and Security Service files over the past five years it is now possible to analyse the subject in greater depth and detail than had been previously feasible. The work is predominantly concerned with four key areas: firstly, why domestic communism continued to be viewed as a significant threat by successive governments – even despite both the ideology’s relatively limited popular support amongst the general public and Whitehall’s realisation that the Communist Party of Great Britain presented little by way of a direct challenge to British political stability. Secondly, how Whitehall’s understanding of the nature and severity of the threat posed by British communism developed between the late 1940s and early ‘60s, from a problem considered mainly of importance only to civil service security practices to one which directly impacted upon the conduct of educational policy and labour relations.

Books About Winston S. Churchill Annotated and edited by Richard M. Langworth Annotations through 2004 were compiled for Curt Zoller’s Bibliography of Works About Sir Winston S. Though untainted by knowledge of future greatness, the admiring author predicted that Churchill would become prime minister. 1907 Leech, H. J. Mr. Winston Churchill. Manchester: Abel Heywood. Churchill was “deselected” as Member of Parliament for Oldham after he defied its Conservative majority by becoming a Liberal in 1904. Denied the Tory nomination in Oldham for the general election of January 1905, he was invited to stand as a Liberal for North West Manchester, one of nine Manchester seats, with a tiny electorate of 10,000, a third of whom were Jewish. Churchill spoke strongly for Free Trade, popular in Manchester’s mill industries, and was duly elected. 1909 Batchelor, H. Crouch, compiler. Mr. Winston Churchill On The Radical Party: Before He Donned Their Livery And Accepted Their Pay. London: Pall Mall, 4 pp., softbound. An attack book by a Conservative critic of Churchill’s early career as a Tory before he “crossed the floor” to the Liberals in 1904, dwells on Churchill’s earlier critiques of the party he now spoke for.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract of Thesis This thesis examines the birth of secondary education for Jews in England, focusing on the middle classes as defined in the text. This study explores various types of secondary education that are categorised under one of two generic terms - Jewish secondary education or secondary education for Jews. The former describes institutions, offered by individual Jews, which provided a blend of religious and/or secular education. The latter focuses on non-Jewish schools which accepted Jews (and some which did not but were, nevertheless, attended by Jews). Whilst this work emphasises London and its environs, other areas of Jewish residence, both major and minor, are also investigated.

  • “Run with the Fox and Hunt with the Hounds”: Managerial Trade Unionism and the British Association of Colliery Management, 1947-1994
“Run with the fox and hunt with the hounds”: managerial trade unionism and the British Association of Colliery Management, 1947-1994 Abstract This article examines the evolution of managerial trade-unionism in the British coal industry, specifically focusing on the development of the British Association of Colliery Management (BACM) from 1947 until 1994. It explores the organization’s identity from its formation as a conservative staff association to its emergence as a distinct trade union, focusing on key issues: industrial action and strike cover; affiliation to the Trades Union Congress (TUC); colliery closures; and the privatization of the coal industry. It examines BACM’s relationship with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the National Association of Colliery Overmen, Deputies and Shotfirers (NACODS), the National Coal Board (NCB) and subsequently the British Coal Corporation (BCC). This is explored within the wider context of the growth of managerial trade unions in post-war Britain and managerial identity in nationalized industries. Keywords: Managerial unionism; white-collar trade unions; public ownership; coal industry The British Association of Colliery Management was a very British institution in that it seemed to have the freedom both to run with the fox and hunt with the hounds … Although it never really joined in the dispute [1984-5 miners’ strike] when it came, it took some getting used to a situation in which people who clearly laid full claim to being representatives of “management” could, and did, through their union, criticize that management.1 Former NCB chairman Ian MacGregor’s vituperative attack on BACM reflected the breakdown between the two parties and their distinct 1 outlooks on the future of the industry in the 1980s.

  • Modern Records Centre Annual Report 2014-2015 2 Modern Records Centre Introduction
Modern Records Centre Annual Report 2014-2015 2 Modern Records Centre Introduction 2014-2015 has been an action packed year. We have developed links and projects with new and different audiences and researchers, extending our educational work and introducing many more students and schools to the archives we hold. Nuala’s Archives aLive project was particularly exciting and certainly enthused some of our younger visitors. The Centre also started to work with the Students Union on a series of talks and exhibitions and this has provided a foundation for a programme of events which we hope to develop in the next academic year. Details on all of these activities are included in this report. The fiftieth anniversary placed significant demands on the Centre and provided impetus for the digitisation of large amounts of the University’s material including many photographs and student publications. Our front cover this year shows the building of the main Library in June 1966 and highlights the dramatic changes which have occurred to the Warwick campus over the 50 years. We have delivered talks to external audiences, hosted exhibitions and even took part in the Cheltenham Science Festival alongside Warwick’s Science Faculty with tea, cake and photographs of our LEO computer material (suitably protected). An interesting and eventful year! Annual Report 2014/15 3 Collections/Accessions We received 62 deposits during the year ranging in size from a few items to several hundred boxes. Some of the highlights are listed below. By far the largest deposit during the year was the archive of the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain, which arrived in March 2015 and fills well over 400 boxes.

Research was carried out under the auspices of the Department of Politics, University of Warwick. This thesis was submitted in December 1987. SUMMARY Immigration to Britain from the New Commonwealth began in earnest in the late 1940s and the early 1950s. British governments, both Socialist and Conservative, found the issues raised by such immigration difficult to deal. with. This is evident from the succession of immigration control and race relations measures in the period 1961 to 1981. These dates mark respectively the Parliamentary debates on what became the 1962 Commonwealth Immigration Act and the 1981 British Nationality Act. As such these measures delineate clearly the development of this major policy area. One of the noticeable features of this policy area is the recognition by participants of the existence and importance of values and attitudes characterised by the term "liberal". Such liberal values were commonly associated with opinion formers in a wide variety of institutions, but particularly amongst leaders of the Labour and Liberal Parties, the churches and government- sponsored race relations bodies.
