Umeshmani Lecturer (Contract) in History, Department of History, University of Kerala, Kerala, India Abstract Agrarian unrest in world context or Indian context of historical research always tends to relate itself with some kind of reaction or retaliation against some kind of oppression meted out to the people belonging to the lower strata of society by the privileged class better known as class of elites. While analyzing the impact of such struggles upon the society one can clearly understand the changes it brought about in the society affecting various spheres of development directly or indirectly.It also provides a vivid picture about the underlying reasons behind such outbursts and thereby serves as an apt indicator of the nature of the then society affected by such unrests.This eventually happensas agrarian sector plays a major role in affectingsociety as it is unduly depending upon the same for basic sustenance. Hence, it is always advisable to understand the problems related with agrarian sector to clearly analyze the problems related with society which is exactly what the nationalist leaders of Indian freedom struggle did to find solution to a long period of suppression by British regime.British always targeted the agrarian sector and land revenue settlement related with the same to control the basic crux of the society. Furthermore, it also played a major role in impacting upon the socio-political scenario of India. -

Department of History University of Calicut, Kerala Abstract: The Khilafat movement which started as an international Muslim agitation against the sovereignty of the British colonial forces all over the world had its repercussions in India also, and its effects were felt among the Muslims of Malabar too. The Malabar Rebellion which started as a violent protest against the exploitation of the feudal landlords, who were mostly Hindus and the supporters of the British colonial rule, soon turned into a part of the freedom struggle and gathered momentum. But unfortunately due to the misguided directions of religions leadership what started as a struggle for freedom against oppression and exploitation soon deteriorated into the horrors of a series of communal conflicts. An examination of the Khilafat movement in Malabar would reveal that the Muslims of Malabar began to identify themselves as part of the National Muslim Community only by the dawn of the 20 th century. The political scenario of Malabar from 1920 to 1925 is specifically marked by the life and activities of Muhammed Abdurahiman. International Journal of Science and Research (IJSR) ISSN: 2319-7064 ResearchGate Impact Factor (2018): 0.28 | SJIF (2018): 7.426 Social Exclusion of Ravuthar Community: A Case Study Mohammed Rishad K P M.Phil Scholar, Gandhigram Rural Institute (Deemed to be University) Centre for Applied research Dindigul, Tamil Nadu, India Abstract: India, the world’s largest democracy, has a multi-cultural rash that has numerous religious communities. According to the 2011 census, 79.8 percent are practicing Hinduism and 14.2 percent are adheres to Islam, while the remaining 6 percent are other religions. According to Rizvi and Roy (1984), Indian Muslims are not a homogeneous community as it appears in the general perception Muslims are divided based on different religious ideologies, caste differentiation and customary practices. Among the different Muslim communities, Ravuthar is one of the Muslim communities from the South Indian States of Tamil Nadu and Kerala who are socially excluded at a wider. The etymology of the word suggests ‘ravath’ means ‘warriors’. But in reality, the Ravuthar community is facing high discrimination among the Muslim community. The present study is focused on how the Ravuthar community is excluded or discriminated among the Muslim community at Thiruvegappura Panchayat, Palakkad District, and Kerala by using descriptive research design. The researcher has employed an interview guide and case study. From the case studies, the relevant information was collected by the researcher. In the community, they were facing various issues such as stigma discrimination based on their linguistic and spatial. Their representation in any religious or social positions is very less. -

Tracing various concepts, such as caste identity, and their multiple links to contempt, labour and Islamic ethical discourses and practices, this article demonstrates shifting meanings of these concepts and ways in which the Muslim barbers of Malabar (in southwest India) negotiate religious and social histories as well as status in everyday life. The aim was to link legal and social realms by considering how bodily comportment of barbers and pious Muslims intersect and diverge. Relying on ethnographic fieldwork among Muslim barbers of Malabar and their oral histories, it becomes apparent that status is negotiated in a fluid community where professional contempt, multiple attitudes about modernity and piety crosscut one another to inform local perceptions of themselves or others. This paper seeks to avoid the presentation of a teleology of past to present, binaries distinguishing professionals from quacks, and the pious from the scorned. The argument instead is that opposition between caste/caste-like practices and Islamic ethics is more complex than an essentialised dichotomy would convey. Department of History, N.S.S.College, Manjeri, Malappuram (Kerala) Abstract: Malabar rebellion must be reckoned as a turning point in the modern history of Kerala and a significant event in the history of India. It was mainly a revolt of the mappila population mainly peasants “against the lord and state” .The mass insurrection lasted for about 8 months and proved to be a more violent and devastating than any other earlier out breaks. The rebellion was a bloody and traumatic experience for the whole population of Malabar. The army and police unleashed a reign terror; both men and women became the victims of the terror. The present paper aims to bring out the views and comments of the people regarding the anti- colonial and anti- land lord struggle. The people who didn‟t have a direct experience of the rebellion also framed a view of the struggle through the tales and stories passed through the generations. An oral history is an account of information that has been passed down through the generation. An oral report must be a true description of an event. In collection of oral testimony historian should be sensitive to gender differences. The answer provided by male and female may not be alike. Women do have their own style and tools (Language, gestures, expressions etc.) to recall the tale of day to day life in the past and how the event affected the personnel life of their as well as their immediate relatives. -

Every Gulf worker who had no relative in the Gulf to support him will have a similar story. I finally fixed up the total by mortgaging the house and the little amount of gold Sainu had as jewellery, and by collecting small amounts from other sand miners and by borrowing from everyone I knew. Yes, ‘fix up’ best describes it. Suffice to say I gave my friend’s brother-in-law the money the night before he left. (I could have asked Sainu’s brothers in Abu Dhabi, but she refused to let me. She resented them for not helping me till then.) Two months passed, months of waiting and dreaming. And there was another round of borrowing. I had to arrange the remaining ten for the agent. Even that was fixed up. Meanwhile, I dreamt a host of dreams. Perhaps the same stock dreams that the 1.4 million Malayalis in the Gulf had when they were in Kerala—gold watch, fridge, TV, car, AC, tape recorder, VCP, a heavy gold chain. I shared them with Sainu as we slept together at night. “I don’t need anything, ikka. Do return when you have enough to secure the life of our child (son or daughter?). We don’t need to accumulate wealth like my brothers. No mansion either. A life together. That’s all.” Maybe the wife of every man who is about to leave for the Gulf tells him the same thing. -

CHAPTER FOUR Pointers to New Social Order Introduction This chapter tries to look into the changes that had occurred in the social structure of Malabar during the eighteenth century. An attempt is made to understand the social structure of the period and to see how the changes that were mentioned in the previous two chapters led to the changes in the social structure. Every society has its own social hierarchy that is moulded according to the economic base. In the previous chapters we have seen how new social groups had come into land and also the subsequent changes in the political structure. In this chapter, an attempt is made to see if these changes led to corresponding change in the social hierarchy of Malabar. 1. Tracing the Social Formations of Malabar: Historical Antecedents 1.1. The Society of Cera Period With the coming of Brahmins into Karaka one can see the reorganization of the social structure into the mould of the varnasramadharma. At the apex of the society were the Brahmins, followed by antarala jatis, the Sudras, the Ezhavas and the host of untouchable castes who stood outside the pale of the caste system. There were a handful of the Kshatriya castes in Kerala. Most of them followed the matrilineal system and the women had sambandham relationship with the Brahmins. Similarly, the Vaysya caste too was not present and the functions of the caste were done by the Christians, the Muslims and also the Jews. As in other regions of Kerala, the Malabar society was also the temple oriented one in Cera period; the hoards of temple inscriptions, Tamil and Sanskrit literature are the testimonial to this fact.
