Ali Musliyar Scholar Turned Freedom Fighter-Malabar Pages
ALI MUSLIYAR SCHOLAR TURNED FREEDOM FIGHTER-MALABAR PAGES Hussain Randathani 1 In Malabar, on the coast of Arabian sea in South India, Musliyar is a familiar epithet to the Islamic scholars. The word owes it s origin to Arabic and Tamil, a south Indian language- Muslih an Arabic term meaning, one who refine and yar a honorific title used in the area. The word was coined by the Makhdums as a degree to those who completed their studies in the Ponnani mosque Academy and later it came to be used to all those who performed religious duties. The Musliyars, hither to remained as religious heads turned into politics during colonial period starting from 1498 with the coming o the Portuguese on the coast. Muslims, as a trading community had become influential in the area through their trade and naval fights against the colonial invaders. Islam is said to had reached on the coast during the time of the prophet Muhammad, ie., in the seventh century, and prospered through trade and conversion making the land a house of Islam (Dar al Islam). The local rulers provided facilities to the Muslim sufi missionaries accompanying the traders, to prosper themselves and the presence of Islam naturally did away with caste restrictions which had been the oar of discrimination in Malabar society. Ali Musliyar (1854-1922), as told above, belonged to the family of scholars of Malabar, residing at the present Nellikkuthu, 8 Kilometer away on Manjeri Mannarkkad Road in the district of Malappuram, in South India. The Place is a Muslim dominated area, people engaging mainly in agriculture and petty trades. -

Contempt and Labour: an Exploration Through Muslim Barbers of South Asia
religions Article Contempt and Labour: An Exploration through Muslim Barbers of South Asia Safwan Amir Madras Institute of Development Studies, University of Madras, Chennai 600020, India; [email protected] Received: 9 September 2019; Accepted: 4 November 2019; Published: 6 November 2019 Abstract: This article explores historical shifts in the ways the Muslim barbers of South Asia are viewed and the intertwined ways they are conceptualised. Tracing various concepts, such as caste identity, and their multiple links to contempt, labour and Islamic ethical discourses and practices, this article demonstrates shifting meanings of these concepts and ways in which the Muslim barbers of Malabar (in southwest India) negotiate religious and social histories as well as status in everyday life. The aim was to link legal and social realms by considering how bodily comportment of barbers and pious Muslims intersect and diverge. Relying on ethnographic fieldwork among Muslim barbers of Malabar and their oral histories, it becomes apparent that status is negotiated in a fluid community where professional contempt, multiple attitudes about modernity and piety crosscut one another to inform local perceptions of themselves or others. This paper seeks to avoid the presentation of a teleology of past to present, binaries distinguishing professionals from quacks, and the pious from the scorned. The argument instead is that opposition between caste/caste-like practices and Islamic ethics is more complex than an essentialised dichotomy would convey. Keywords: barber; Ossan; caste; Islam; contempt; labour; Mappila; Makti Thangal; Malabar; South Asia 1. Introduction The modern nation-state of India has maintained an ambiguous relationship with caste and minority religions especially concerning reservation policies in various state and non-state sectors. -

Migration of Muslims from Kerala to Gulf Countries, Evidenses for Forced Migration from the Villages of Malappuram in Kerala, India
Migration of Muslims from Kerala to Gulf Countries, evidenses for forced migration from the villages of Malappuram in Kerala, India The struggles I had to undergo the next one week! Every Gulf worker who had no relative in the Gulf to support him will have a similar story. I finally fixed up the total by mortgaging the house and the little amount of gold Sainu had as jewellery, and by collecting small amounts from other sand miners and by borrowing from everyone I knew. Yes, ‘fix up’ best describes it. Suffice to say I gave my friend’s brother-in-law the money the night before he left. (I could have asked Sainu’s brothers in Abu Dhabi, but she refused to let me. She resented them for not helping me till then.) Two months passed, months of waiting and dreaming. And there was another round of borrowing. I had to arrange the remaining ten for the agent. Even that was fixed up. Meanwhile, I dreamt a host of dreams. Perhaps the same stock dreams that the 1.4 million Malayalis in the Gulf had when they were in Kerala—gold watch, fridge, TV, car, AC, tape recorder, VCP, a heavy gold chain. I shared them with Sainu as we slept together at night. “I don’t need anything, ikka. Do return when you have enough to secure the life of our child (son or daughter?). We don’t need to accumulate wealth like my brothers. No mansion either. A life together. That’s all.” Maybe the wife of every man who is about to leave for the Gulf tells him the same thing. -
