Sophomore Listening Project

This project is designed to give you an idea of what your instrument sounds like as played by professionals in many different styles and settings. Listen to each selection and answer the following questions on a separate sheet of paper.

Winds: Tracks 1-4 (Listen to all four and choose two to write about – one paragraph each.) Listen carefully to the soloist. Briefly describe the piece and then discuss the performer’s tone and technique. How can yo u improve your own playing based on what you heard? What do you like or dislike about the piece?

Tracks 5-6 (Listen to both and choose one to write about – one paragraph.) Listen to how your instrument fits into the ensemble. How does this relate to your role in our band? What other instruments do you hear? What do you like or dislike about the piece?

Percussion: Tracks 1-3 (Listen to all three and choose two to write about – one paragraph each.) Listen carefully to the soloist. What instruments do you hear? Briefly describe the piece and then discuss the performer’s tone and technique. How can you improve your own playing based on what you heard? What do you like or dislike about the piece?

Tracks 4-6 (Listen to all three and choose one to write about – one paragraph.) What instruments do you hear in this ensemble? How does their technique, balance and blend relate to your own playing of the various instruments in our percussion section? What do you like or dislike about the piece?
