EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTRE PRE VISIT

Ngohe Tuatahi : Activity One Waiata Tuatahi : Song One

Learn this simple waiata and teach it to the Kaiapoi Pā tamariki. You could add hand actions to make it more memorable. Kaiapoi Pā 2x Tūrākautahi 2x Please see resource pack He pā tūwatawata 2x Mō te

Ngohe Tuarua : Activity Two Manu Rākau Use the pictures provided in the resource pack to Kēti teach the kupu to the tamariki. When you visit Kai Kaiapoi Pā you will be able to use these kupu to discover the many corners of the pā. Create cut out pictures of the manu, rākau and kai as well as the kupu and practice saying the words Please see resource pack and counting.

Extra activities TEACH: There were few landmarks emerging Tī kōuka - marker game from the mists of what was then essentially swampland. If weather obscured the hills there was no way of knowing where you were. That is if Please see resource pack it were not for the tī kōuka (cabbage trees) that were carefully planted in significant places to mark out routes across the land like green spiky beacons.

GAME: Create cut out tī kōuka and attach to stick to make a sign that can stand in the ground. Have kids prepare a course in a park etc. where the class follows the course of tī kōuka.

Ideas: Perhaps have a kaupapa to discuss (tree etc.) where each marker is placed

EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTRE VISIT

Ngohe Tuatoru / Activity 3 Take photos of the tamariki at Kaiapoi Pā collecting leaves and any treasures they find. Use Taking photos and creating memories the kēti/gates to show the journey around the pā. Use the photos to write a learning story about their visit. Make sure to include every tauira (student).

At the end discuss and reflect on what tamariki heard, felt, smelt, saw. Have them walk again and now point to the things that they remember

Have them sing or recite their waiata at different points around the pā site.

EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTRE POST VISIT

Ngohe Tuarima: Activity Five Waiata Tuarua : Song Two

Ngohe Tuaono: Activity Six Use a template of a raukura to colour in. Write the tamaiti’s name on the raukura on completion. Raukura Colouring Activity Bring the raukura together to create a korowai and display this in the centre. Please see resource pack

Junior Primary Year 1-4 PRE VISIT

Ngohe Tuatahi : Activity One Use the slideshow provided to show the tamariki what they will see when they come out to the pā. Teach the kupu on Brainstorm/Discussion and explore prior the slide show to the tamariki by saying them when the knowledge slides shows a picture of the kupu. When you visit Kaiapoi Pā you will be able to use these kupu to discover the many Slideshow Presentation corners of the pā.

Ngohe Tuarua: Activity Two

Teach the tamariki the poem - We Are Work with the tamariki to write their own Kaiapoi Pā Hunt. Going on a Bear Hunt.

You could teach them something like this and then ask them to collectively help write a new version.

We’re going on a taonga hunt 2x We’re so brave, we’re so brave I wonder what we’ll find there? 2x Maybe manu, maybe manu.

Ngohe Tuatoru: Activity Three As well as creating simple poems/waiata to describe the pā - students can create their own with a simple acrostic poem or Create/teach simple poems/waiata to use a couple of descriptive sentence starters e.g. describe Kaiapoi Pā - Kaiapoi Pā had a whare - Kaiapoi has lots of manu - Kaiapoi Pā had a chief

Option: create a picture/poster to accompany writing.

Ngohe Tuawhā: Activity Four Who was Tūrākautahi?

Tūrākautahi What kind of a warrior was he? What did he do? Draw an outline of a warrior on large paper and think of words to describe him. The kaiako will add these kupu to the outline. Tamariki could colour him in.

Ngohe Tuarima: Activity Five Take photos of the tamariki at Kaiapoi Pā collecting leaves and any treasures they find. Use the keti/gates to show the Taking Photos and Learning Stories journey around the pā.

Use the photos to write a learning story about their visit. Make sure to include every tauira.

Ngohe Tuaono: Activity Six Activity: Ask tamariki what they can identify and remember - follow up with check in questions to allow them to give Exploring flora and fauna reasons. Refer to the description activities on textures. Describing plants and wildlife Perhaps also talk about colours and sizes too.

Ngohe Tuawaru: Activity Eight Activity: Shoe box size or equivalent. Paint, use pebbles, rocks, sand, glitter, cardboard etc. and get kids to create their own Create a simple box pā Kaiapoi Pā.

FOR PRIMARY (EARLY) - Tamariki can add and write some sentences describing their pā. e.g. There are trees in my pā and 4 manu

Ngohe Tuaiwi / Activity Nine Use the template of the raukura to colour in. Write the tamaiti’s name on the raukura on completion. Bring the raukura together to Raukura colouring activity create a korowai and display this on the wall.

Learning Story Use the photos taken on the visit to write stories about their experience and what they saw while they were visiting. You could use this for their e portfolios.

Ngohe Tuatahi : Activity One Give the material provided from the Ngāi Tūāhuriri blue booklet on Kaiapoi Pā ( Page 6) and the slide Inquiry Activity show link with the different areas of Kaiapoi Pā that the tamariki will see when they visit Kaiapoi Pā.

From this ask the tamariki to develop a broad inquiry question that they might have now based on the information shared.

From the big inquiry question work in collaborative groups to develop further questions with more detail.

Use an inquiry process that your kura supports or use the template that has been provided.

Ngohe Tuarua / Activity Two Activity: Students must prepare a map and directions from the school to Kaiapoi Pā Map work Can use Google maps or maps. Directions

Ngohe Tuatoru: Activity Three Teach the following kupu by matching the kupu with the pikitia. Kupu Develop your own slideshow and overlay the kupu on the pictures. Add a sound file with correct pronunciation.

Ngohe Tuawhā: Activity Four Identify the places in the pā and pinpoint them on the map given. Mapping and photos Take photos of each area and write a description Please see resource pack about how it might have been in the 1930’s and what it is like now. What can you see, feel and hear?

Ngohe Tuarima: Activity Five Activity: Have students take photos of as many plants and wildlife as they know and write notes Photo hunt on what their observations in person of each plant (to be completed in post visit) and wildlife.

Materials: ● iPad or camera to take photos ● Computers at school for uploading ● A platform to showcase work (blog, vlog, print photos and make paper poster)

Senior Primary Year 5-8 POST VISIT

Ngohe Tuawhitu: Activity Seven Hold a class debate. Groups are for and against having Kaiapoi Pā restored to its original being. Debating You will need to teach the art and rules of debating.

Ngohe Tuawaru: Activity Eight Write a letter of thanks to the guide who came in to talk and perhaps give back some of the Write a letter students work.

Ngohe Tuaiwa: Activity Nine Prepare a pamphlet/e-book/ppt on Kaiapoi Pā to market what the Pā and surrounding areas offer. Marketing The pamphlet must be:

Interview Rangatahi will make inquiries into different views on the Kaiapoi Pā and its importance.

Rangatahi will prepare interview questions and interview a range of people (family, friends, teachers). They can present back in a form the choose. They will also give their own view.

This will draw on pre-visit discussions and the visit to Kaiapoi Pā.

SECONDARY PRE VISIT

Tikanga TEACH: Kaiapoi Pā is a sacred/tapu site where certain restrictions are placed to keep the sanctity of the site. It was papa and a place of meeting and trade. It is also a place that was invaded and many people died.

Research tikanga. What are some tikanga that we observe at kura? Home? At the marae?

What types of tikanga are we going to need to understand before the visit? Who could help us?

What are some of the old tikanga that might have been adhered to around gardening and warfare?

Trading What was traded at Kaiapoi Pā? How did trade happen in NZ? Where did people come from to trade and did they bring anything special to trade with them?

Comparative study: How did other cultures trade? Write a description on three other cultures and how they participated in trade traditionally.

How does trade happen now? What methods do we have to trade? Describe importing and exporting goods. What does NZ import and export? China? Taiwan? South America? Russia?
