Saint Augustine was born in Thagaste, Numidia (modern-day Souk Ahras, Algeria) into an upper-class family. His father Patricus (Patrick) was a pagan who converted to Christianity on his deathbed. Augustine’s mother Saint Monica was a Christian and raised Augustine in the faith, though he was not baptized until he was an adult. Young Augustine delighted in worldly pleasures and participated in what Saint Paul referred to as “youthful passions” (2 Timothy 2:22). At age 19 Augustine had a long -term relationship with a woman who gave him a son whom Augustine named Adeodatus (Latin, given by God or Gift of God). Saint Monica prayed relentlessly for her son’s conversion and baptism which took place around the year 388 in the City of Milan by the bishop of the city, Saint Ambrose. Unfortunately, Saint Monica died as she, Augustine, and his son Adeodatus were returning home to Hippo shortly after Augustine’s conversion. ST. Our faith tells us that while God allows the wheat and the weeds to coexist, the wheat will always triumph. As long as we can cultivate even a little faith and a small measure of desire for God, He can produce abundant blessings and good things. Even when the weeds seem to have triumphed, there still may be a small measure of faith remaining that can be cultivated and grown. It doesn’t take much! While God will deal with all things in due time, we are responsible for keeping things in check in the short term.
