the modern foreign languages field or those in the field of EFL/ESL/ESOL. “I've been pleasantly surprised by the level of this This doctoral programme is for those is for those program, and also by the professionalism and who wish to research their practice in language support I get from the staff. Experiencing a learning and teaching in more depth, whether research program such as an EdD can be arduous working in early years, primary, secondary, FE, at times, especially for people who have been away HE, adult or community settings. The course aims from higher education for a long time but here you to provide students with both a thorough grounding get the feeling that everyone and everything are in the philosophy, principles and practice of there for you to help overcome any obstacles and educational research, and a critical understanding achieve your targets. I would recommend the LLT of key contemporary issues in relation to the route not only to those who are in language teaching and learning of languages in all sectors of teaching but also to those who are interested in education and training. what teaching languages really is about. On a more personal note, apart from being a means of professional development, I see this as a chance to try myself at something more advanced research- wise and, particularly during thesis-writing, to really delve into my main area of interest in the field of LLT. Having reached almost half-point, so far the program is everything I expected it to be - well, besides February's chilling weather that is”.

Constantinos Tsouris Special Teaching Staff (English) Language Centre of Cyprus Welcome to The

Structure of the Sheffield EdD The EdD programme is divided into two parts. Part I is the taught component which most students complete over 2 years. Part II is the research element, leading to the thesis, when students receive regular supervision from academic tutors. It is expected that students will take 2-4 years to complete their research in Part II. Extensions to completion are possible.

Part I Part I comprises of six compulsory modules, taught at weekend schools in October, February and May each year and assessed by 6,000-word assignments. The residential aspect of the programme is essential and supports the development of productive learning and research relationships that often continue beyond graduation.

Three modules provide a critical introduction to research in education. Three modules examine key issues in education and training.

Part II Students move on to Part II of the programme when they have received a Pass grade for all 6 modules, one of which is a research proposal. Part II takes the form of a research thesis of 50,000 words focusing on a topic of their choice, supervised by a member of the School with relevant expertise and interests. The thesis should offer a substantial contribution to the knowledge and understanding of education, and will be examined through a viva voce examination to ensure the highest research standards.

The Aims of the Language Learning and Teaching EdD are: To examine and critically evaluate contemporary issues in education policy relating to the teaching and learning of language, drawing on contemporary theories of language education. To explore the relationship between research and policy formation and enactment in relation to key theoretical concepts in language education. To explore the connections between research, policy, culture and society in relation to language education in an inter-disciplinary context, and relating this to students’ own professional practice.
