Beginning with the upheavals of the Reformation, and ending with the Enlightenment, it was a time of fundamental change in society, religion, ideas and everyday life, but also one of strong continuities with earlier times. This free course, Early modern Europe: an introduction, provides an introduction to the early modern period in Europe, exploring how historians have defined and approached the period, and analysing the key aspects of the time. Please note that terms in bold are defined in the glossary at the end of the course. This OpenLearn course is an adapted extract from the Open University course A223 Early modern Europe: society and culture, 1500 to 1780. 4 of 40 http://www.open.edu/openlearn/history-the-arts/early-modern-europe-introduction/content-section-0 Monday 12 March 2018 Learning Outcomes By the end of this course, you should be able to: l identify the fundamental features of the early modern period and understand the problems of defining the early modern period l appreciate that there are different approaches to the study of historical periods l understand what evidence we can obtain from historical sources used in the study of early modern Europe. 1 Welcome to early modern Europe 1 Welcome to early modern Europe You will begin the study of early modern Europe with an account by Richard Pococke, an English visitor to Venice on Ascension Day (the Christian festival marking the day when Christ is believed to have ascended into heaven) in 1734. (Figure 1 shows the ceremony in 1730.) There are some unfamiliar words here. The Doge was the elected ruler of Venice, and the procurators were officials of the city. The Pope’s nuncio was a diplomat sent from the Vatican. There is also a phrase in Latin, ‘testimonium perpetui dominii’, which is a misquotation of the ceremonial words Desponsamus te, mare, in signum veri perpetuique domini (‘We wed thee, sea, in the sign of the true and everlasting Lord’). We saw the ceremony of the Doges marrying the sea one of the finest sights in the world. About 9 I saw the Doge at Mass in the chapel of the Palace with the Nobles, thence they went in procession to the Bucentaur or fine Galley, with flags displayed, the sword of state going after the Doge before the Procurators and head Nobles, the Popes Nuncio on the right of the Doge, and the Emperors Ambassador […] on the left […] the Doge went in to the Bucentaur […] being sett off shes rowd by 44 oars, two fine large Galleys of the state row at some distance after, the boats of ambassadors keep near the stern and many thousand Gondolas all about, musick in several boats, the bells all ringing the ships firing as it passd by […] thus they went above a mile to the Isle of St Nicolas where the army of the state were drawn up […] the vessel turnd, and [the Doge] […] threw the ring in to the sea making use of words to this purpose by this ring I marry the sea in testimonium perpetui dominii, on which all the Guns fird, and they returnd to St Nicolas and landing went in procession to the church where mass was celebrated solemnly by the Bishop calld the Patriarch of Venice. Photo: Aldo Crespi Collection/Bridgeman Images. What was your response to reading this passage? It probably prompted many questions. How can you marry a city to the sea, and why would you want to? Why was this ceremony so significant that important people like ambassadors and thousands of Venetian citizens followed the procession? By the end of this course you should be able to answer at least some of these questions – not because you will spend a lot of time studying festivals in Venice, but because you will explore the fundamental aspects of life in early modern Europe, including the role of religion, the structure of society, the organisation of work and trade, and developments in knowledge and ideas. This gives you a set of tools to understand early modern life, including its apparently strange and dramatic public rituals. This course asks some very basic questions – What do we mean by ‘early modern’? What was ‘Europe’ at this time? – and introduces you to a set of themes that will help to structure your understanding. So, it’s time to leave Venice and the Doge’s barge, and turn to early modern Europe, its society and culture. 2 When was the early modern period? The term ‘early modern’ is an example of periodisation: dividing the long expanse of past time into ages or periods. Periods can be defined in different ways.     Venice’s Marriage to the Sea Blog post by Jeanne Willoz-Egnor published May 31, 2019 This weekend marks the annual Festa della Sensa in Venice. Although the festival didn’t start until 1965 it commemorates and recreates the ancient traditional ceremony of Sposalizio del Mar, the event in which Venice is symbolically married to the sea. Hand-colored copperplate engraving titled The Doge in the Bucintoro Departing for the Porto di Lido on Ascension Day. The original artwork was created by Canaletto and engraved by Giovanni Battista Brustolo. This third state engraving was printed by Teodoro Viera in Venice sometime around 1787. [Accession# LE 831] The origins of the ceremony date to the period when Venice was a sovereign state (from 697 AD to 1797 AD). It commemorates two important events in the state’s history: the May 9, 1000 departure of Doge Pietro II Orseolo with a fleet on the successful mission to subdue Narentine pirates threatening Venetian power, trade and travel on the Adriatic and Doge Sebastiano Ziani’s successful negotiation of the Treaty of Venice in 1177. The treaty ended a long standing conflict between the Holy Roman Empire headed by Frederick Barbarossa and the Papacy. Following Orseolo’s victory, each year on Ascension Day Venice celebrated the Doge’s conquest of Dalmatia with a solemn procession of boats led by the doge’s maestà nave to the San Pietro di Castello where the Bishop blessed the doge. The procession then proceeded to the lido at San Nicolò, Venice’s entrée to the Adriatic Sea, where the prayer "for us and all who sail thereon, may the sea be calm and quiet" was offered.

The novel is set in Ferrara in February, 1579, an Italian city at the height of its powers but deep in debt. Amid the aristocratic pomp and popular festivities surrounding the duke’s wedding to his third wife, the secret child of the city’s most celebrated singer goes missing. A street-smart debt collector and lovelorn bureaucrat are drawn into her increasingly desperate attempts to find her son, their efforts uncovering the brutal instruments of ostentation and domination that gave rise to what we now know as the Renaissance. In the critical component, I draw on the experience of writing The Angel of Ferrara and nonfiction works to explore the relationship between history and fiction. Beginning with a survey of the development of historical fiction since the inception of the genre’s modern form with the Walter Scott’s Waverley, I analyse the various paratextual interventions—prefaces, authors’ notes, acknowledgements—authors have used to explore and explain the use of factual research in their works. I draw on this to reflect in more detail at how research shaped the writing of the Angel of Ferrara and other recent historical novels, in particular Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall.

PREAMBLE ‘In 1992, there were 1.3 million people arriving in a country outside that of their residence and spending an average of $764 million on accommodations, meals, entertainment and shopping’ (Segal, 1987). Total international tourist arrivals for 1989 have been established by the World Tourism Organization (WTO) at 405.3 million. And travel and tourism contribution to the world economy amounted to $US2 trillion in sales. In effect, the European Council on Development has deter- mined that, by the year 2000, the tourism industry will be the largest in the world (World Tourism Organization, 1994). Whereas in previous decades tourism has been largely shaped by transport technol- ogy advances, the future decade will be determined by a number of factors, already evidenced: socio-demographic changes; electronic information and communication systems; more knowledgeable and demanding consumers; de-regulatory market place (Fridgen, 1991: 3–26). Some influences on, and determinants of, tourism activity in the 1990-2000 period will be: the scale and variety of tourism development in all types of tourism destinations; the growing interest in peoples and cultures of developing countries; increases in the number of consumers with free time, financial ability and interest to travel; the growing importance of ethnic ties between different nations. Prime examples of market niche targeting related to sports, according to the WTO forecast, are: sailing, yachting, scuba diving, golfing, resort holidays and island hopping. Themed holidays are also becoming popular, accounting for a significant proportion of total tourist demands – approaching the stage of mainstream holiday rather than the traditional ‘beach’ sequence (McCourt, 1989: 13).

    05-425290.qxd:Main article template.qxd 31/3/10 08:45 Page 49 Anna Tüskés Venetian well-heads in nineteenth-century taste Venetian well-heads may not strike the modern researcher as objects of any special importance, rooted as they are in everyday life as basic parts in the water- system. Instead, these works of art are mostly displayed in museums or can be found in public and private collections from the United States to Russia. Many well-heads have been destroyed or lost. Surviving examples are, in many cases, deprived of their original function, and are used for decorative purposes, for example as flowerpots in private gardens or parks. This loss of function poses several problems for the researcher that render the actual historical investigation all the more difficult. The aim of this article is to show how the growing cult of Venice contributed to the emergence of well-heads in Anglo-American literature, and to the development and re-animation of the related branch of the art trade in the nineteenth century. After a review of travel journals and other literary works, copies, forgeries, and the activity of collectors and dealers in the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century art trade, three newly identified well-heads will be presented as examples. These were previously thought to have been lost and have not been analysed in the context of Venetian carvings. At first, interest in well-heads was often connected to commercial activities. During the nineteenth century, those who studied well-heads were mostly sculptors and art dealers, as well as art historians sent to Venice from foreign countries as agents for various museums.

    Primi influssi culturali italo-veneti sull’inglese: la testimonianza dei venezianismi in Florio, Coryate e Jonson Ronnie Ferguson 1. Premessa Questo saggio si propone di considerare alcuni venezianismi, assieme alla loro rilevanza culturale, che emersero nella scrittura in Inghilter- ra – e in alcuni casi penetrarono in inglese – intorno al 1600. Il periodo sotto considerazione, post-rinascimentale nel contesto italiano, è nel contesto inglese pienamente rinascimentale.1 Gli autori esaminati sono tre. Il primo, John Florio, è un lessicografo inglese, di famiglia tosca- na, autore del più importante e completo dizionario italiano-inglese di quell’epoca,2 e appassionato di teatro. Il secondo, Thomas Coryate, è un eccentrico scrittore-viaggiatore inglese, anch’egli appassionato di teatro, che trascorse nel 1608 un’estate a Venezia, dandone la più com- pleta e vivace descrizione fin allora mai scritta da un britannico nelle sue Coryats Crudities (1611). Il terzo, Ben Jonson, è uomo di teatro, il più influente commediografo, con Shakespeare, dell’epoca elisabettiana e di Giacomo i d’Inghilterra, che ambientò la sua commedia più nota, Volpone,3 proprio a Venezia. In the space where his portrait should be, on the wall of the Great Hall of the Palace of the Doges, there is a painted curtain drawn across (see illustration above). Two years later, Byron tells us in his preface, he sought out the actual tomb, and was shown “a sarcophagus in the wall with an illegible inscription”.1 It would have coincided eerily with the fates of so many of his own protagonists – the Giaour, Conrad, Lara, Kaled, Ezzelin, Alp, Parisina, Hugo … and even the recently-created Astarte – creatures of his own imagining, none of whom are properly buried.

    ‘MAPPY’ IMAGERIES OF THE WATERY CITY: The cartographic figure of the Venice Lagoon across epochs and media [Received August 28th 2020; accepted February 1st 2021 – DOI: 10.21463/shima.103] Tania Rossetto Università degli Studi di Padova, Italy <[email protected]> ABSTRACT: Adopting a cultural approach to cartographic repertoires, this carto-essay highlights the immense visual heritage of the Venetian Lagoon in order to extrapolate a series of ‘mappy’ images that have given shape to the cartographic figure of the city on water. In light of the current convergence of visual culture and cartography, and by adopting visual juxtapositions, the article evokes different cartographic variations of the watery city: from the city sitting on the sea to the city sitting on the lagoon, from the port city to the archipelago, from the maritime city to the (wet)landscape city par excellence. This contribution thus proposes a journey across a range of Venetian cartographic imageries, which include different media and epochs, as well as different genres and registers, from the majestic to the banal, and from the dramatic to the ironic, thus also moving across the different cartographic moods associated with the watery city. As Juergen Schulz used to say during the 1970s while he was investigating modern-age Venetian cartography, the map is not always a map: in past times, the map was often a vehicle for nongeographical ideas. Even today, maps are ideas, they are ways of knowing, thinking and acting, they hold cultural meaning and political messages, but also hopeful imaginings. Indeed, cartographic representations of and rhetoric about the Venetian Lagoon are carried out by different actors, thus contributing to a process of continuous re-figuration and de/re-centralisation of the lagoonal space.

Abstract The church of San Sebastiano in Venice, and its adjoining convent of the Girolamini, is considered as the "temple" of Paolo Veronese, entirely painted by him and therefore the destination of international scholars and visitors. The study of the recovered archival sources belonging to the monastery have unearthed the tumultuous events that for about half a century, in the first half of the sixteenth century, shook the convent during the conflicts with two Albanian priests: Niccolò Franco and Girolamo Messio. The cause of the dispute was the possession of a priory in Treviso, Santa Felicita of Romano. The conflict quickly became a battleground between church and state arguing about the rights of appointment of ecclesiastical offices. The Albanian side had an unconditional support from Rome, especially by Pope Paul III. In 1553, a "Concordio" put an end to the dispute and the year of 1554 saw the beginning of Paolo Veronese’s pictorial cycle. From the documents recovered emerges indeed a new personality to be ascribed to the history of Albanian culture, namely Girolamo Messio, who is the author of some writings. Above all, a new interpretive trail of all the decoration of the church is unveiled, which allows to read the metaphorical references to the geopolitical role of Scanderbeg's Albania as a confessional boundary.
