Historians, particularly art historians, have long recognized them as among the most colorful, most individually talented, and intrinsically most interesting of Renaissance Italian princely families. In architectural, literary, and musical taste the Gonzaga were unquestionably and continually in the lead. In the mid­ fifteenth century Marquis Ludovico (ruled 1444-1478) brought Alberti, the father of Renaissance architecture, from Florence to Mantua to remake a large downtown church, Sant' Andrea, into a masterpiece alia antica, at that moment a daring plan much opposed by the local Mantuan clergy. Isabella d'Este, wife of Marquis Francesco (ruled 1484-1519), surrounded herself with an admiring bevy of minor poets (who obsequiously prefaced their works with encomiums praising Isabella's beauty) and collected books with a fastidious and expert eye, including issues of classical and Italian works from the famous Venetian printer Aldo Manuzio. Duke Vincenzo I (ruled 1587- 1612) retained Monteverdi, the originator of opera, to design and orchestrate the court and civic spectacles of Mantua. The outstanding painters and sculptors patronized, sometimes almost exclusively, by the Gonzaga make a long list: Pisanello (lived c. 1390- c. 1455), Mantegna (1431-1506), Titian (c. 1485-1576), Giulio Romano (c. 1499-1546), Pourbus (1569-1622), Rubens (1577- 1640), and many others. The artistic side of the Gonzaga court at Mantua has 1 2 been minutely studied; their theatricals and musical programs; their passions for collecting coins and cameos, profane sculptures and holy relics, swift horses and human dwarfs; their penchant for devising and displaying intellectually subtle and obscure visual symbols. The fashionable influence of the Gonzaga court, in Italy and abroad, was not negligible. Castiglione, whose 1528 Courtier defined the ideal prince as part aesthete and part bold warrior, learned his etiquette at Mantua from the example of the Gonzaga. The greatest-or at least most famous-patroness of the sixteenth century, Isabella d'Este, married a Gonzaga, Marquis Francesco, and her taste made the Gonzaga court at Mantua the most stylish of the day. Isabella d'Este, though she never had quite funds enough for all the jewels, dresses, and antique sculptures she desired, presided over an obedient throng of poets and painters that more than equaled the retinue of every other socially ambitious Italian princess. In historiographical perspective, the life of Isabella d'Este became the model for the Romantic nineteenth-century idea of the Renaissance, so much so that Proust thought of her as an emblem of the period as a whole.l Clearly, the court life of the Gonzaga is worth scholarly attention; but such examination alone yields an interior view of the

Archivio Gonzaga Nota introduttiva L’Archivio Gonzaga si può definire in sostanza come l’antico archivio «segreto» marchionale poi ducale, abbondantemente integrato con altra documentazione di data molto posteriore alla caduta della dinastia; esso è stato inserito, durante i lavori di ordinamento iniziati nel 1760, entro le ventidue classi A-Z fissate col piano di sistemazione variato il 13 agosto 1775. Come tale è poi rimasto, intatto nella sua struttura, a costituire il nucleo più prestigioso e il centro d’attrazione di sempre nuove carte di particolare importanza, sia dell’archivio governativo istituito nel 1786, sia soprattutto dell’archivio storico patrio pervenuto, come si è detto, all’Archivio di Stato di Mantova nel 1899. Un tipico archivio di corte e di cancelleria, insomma, con richiami di atti dalle più svariate magistrature sia comunali che principesche, ma ordinato per materia a posteriori, e quindi in modo tale da non rispecchiare né l’organizzazione della cancelleria, né tanto meno quella degli organi di governo nel loro complesso. Naturalmente esso comprende anche carte di data anteriore all’avvento dei Gonzaga al potere: in particolare quelle che i Gonzaga stessi avevano concentrato nella magna domus dopo la battaglia di piazza San Pietro del 16 agosto 1328, data comunemente accolta come termine della signoria bonacolsiana, e che l’incendio dell’archivio del comune nel 1413 ha reso poi particolarmente preziose.

    SEZIONI MOSTRA L’esposizione è suddivisa in tre sezioni : Prima della Spina La Spina dei Borghi Cavare la “spina” a San Pietro PRIMA DELLA SPINA Tramite sculture, affreschi, disegni, dipinti e cartografie si racconterà come questo territorio passò dall’essere marginale e inospitale ad esercitare una forte attrazione urbanistica su Roma divenendone parte integrante. Escluso dal perimetro delle mura, povero e malsano a causa dei frequenti straripamenti del Tevere, questo territorio iniziò ad esercitare una forte attrazione urbanistica su Roma solo a partire dalla prima età imperiale. A seguito di interventi di bonifica furono realizzate le prime ville suburbane le più famose delle quali appartenevano ad Agrippina e Domizia. Giardini dal ricco arredo scultoreo si alternavano a costruzioni sfruttando scenograficamente la topografia dei luoghi, vicini al fiume e prossimi ai rilievi del colle Vaticano, del Monte Santo Spirito e del Gianicolo. Lungo le due strade principali che attraversavano la zona, la via Triumphalis e la via Cornelia, si addensarono diversi monumenti funerari (tra le memorie più evidenti, oggi, il mausoleo di Adriano, la necropoli vaticana – sotto la Basilica – e quella dell’Autoparco Vaticano e di S. Rosa). Se il termine “ Vaticano ” è oggi immediatamente riconducibile a San Pietro e al cristianesimo, in età imperiale ebbe una valenza fortemente pagana : quest’area ospitò infatti un luogo di culto dedicato alla dea frigia Cibele chiamato, per l’appunto, Vaticanum o Phrygianum Vaticanum frequentato ancora fin quasi alla fine del IV sec. d.C ., in compresenza e forse in contrapposizione alla nuova fede emergente, il cristianesimo. Nel corso dell’alto medioevo, intorno alla Basilica si sviluppò una vera e propria area sacra con monasteri, diaconie, chiese: burgs era il termine con cui i pellegrini germanici definivano l’agglomerato da cui “Borgo”.

Regulations 11 and 12 of the Town and Country Planning (Local Planning) (England) Regulations 2012 require the City Corporation to prepare a consultation statement setting out who was consulted when preparing a supplementary planning document, a summary of the main issues raised by those persons and how these have been addressed in the SPD. The following measures were taken to consult the public on the SPD during the consultation period: Website. The draft SPD and supporting documents were made available on the City Corporation‟s web site. Information and a link were provided on the home page of the City‟s website and on the landing page of the Planning section of the website to ensure maximum exposure.     ABSTRACT HODNET, ANDREW ARTHUR. The Othering of the Landsknechte. (Under the direction of Dr. Verena Kasper-Marienberg). This thesis offers a socio-cultural analysis of early modern German media to explore the public perception of the Landsknechte, mercenaries that were both valued and feared for their viciousness, and their indifference displayed towards the political motivations of their clients. Despite their ubiquity on European battlefields, and their role in repulsing the 1529 Ottoman invasion of Austria, by 1530 the Landsknechte and their families were perceived as thoroughly dishonorable by central Reformation society and were legally excluded from most urban centers. This study engages with a critical assessment of contemporary songs, religious pamphlets, broadsheets, political treatises, autobiographic sources, and belletristic representations of the Landsknechte to explore the paradoxical relationship that they maintained with the state actors that relied on their employment. Powazek Master of Arts, Graduate Program in Art History University of California, Riverside, June 2020 Dr. Kristoffer Neville, Chairperson When the Albertine Dukes of Saxony gained the Electoral privilege in the second half of the sixteenth century, they ascended to a higher echelon of European princes. Elector August (r. 1553-1586) marked this new status by commissioning a monumental tomb in Freiberg Cathedral in Saxony for his deceased brother, Moritz, who had first won the Electoral privilege for the Albertine line of rulers. The tomb’s magnificence and scale, completed in 1563, immediately set it into relation to the grandest funerary memorials of Europe, the tombs of popes and monarchs, and thus establishing the new Saxon Electors as worthy peers in rank and status to the most powerful rulers of the period. By the end of his reign, Elector August sought to enshrine the succeeding rulers of his line in an even grander project, a dynastic chapel built into Freiberg Cathedral directly in front of the tomb of Moritz.
