(December 2010) Lilia Campana, B.A., University of Urbino Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Filipe Vieira de Castro This thesis investigates the significant role that the Venetian humanist Vettor Fausto (1490-1546), professor of Greek at the School of Saint Mark, played during the first half of the 16th century in Venetian naval architecture. Early in the 16th century, the maritime power of Venice was seriously threatened by the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman II in the East and by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V in the West. In order to regain its naval power in the Mediterranean, the Republic of Venice strongly encouraged Venetian shipwrights to submit new designs for war galleys. The undisputed founder and champion of this naval program was not a skilled shipwright but a young professor of Greek in the School of Saint Mark named Vettor Fausto, who in the heat of this renewal programme, proposed “marine architecture” as a new scientia. In 1529, Vettor Fausto built a quinqueremis whose design, he claimed, was based upon the quinquereme “used by the Romans during their wars” and that he had derived the shipbuilding proportions “from the most ancient Greek manuscripts.” The recovery of Classical traditions resulted in major changes in many fields. It included shipbuilding iv practices as well, especially after Fausto introduced in the Venetian Arsenal a new scientia, that of “marine architecture”, in opposition to the fabrilis peritia, the empirical shipbuilding practice. This work examines several Renaissance sources and archival material in order to illuminate the technical features and the design of Fausto’s quinquereme. Based on the study of the anonymous 16th-century Venetian manuscript Misure di vascelli etc. di…proto dell’Arsenale di Venetia from the State Archive of Venice, this thesis presents a general overview of Fausto’s life and his cultural background in order to better understand the humanistic foundations that led him to propose the construction of the quinquereme. Also presented in this thesis is a theoretical reconstruction of Fausto’s quinquereme and the suggestion that the shipbuilding instructions contained in the anonymous manuscript are connected to the work of Fausto in the Venetian Arsenal. v To Alberta and Gastone Campana “…for parents can provide their children with no more lasting resources, no more dependable protection in life than instruction.” vi ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS It is a pleasure to acknowledge the support of the many people who allowed me to research and write this thesis. For being an inspiration for what a scholarly researcher should be and for forcing me to be always constructively critical in my approach to research, I would like to thank him with some words I found on the back of a rare printed book in the Marciana Library in Venice, presumably written by a student: “Excellent is the teacher who, by teaching, incites in his pupils a great desire to learn.” Dr. Vivian Paul shared with me her knowledge and huge bibliography in her History of Medieval Architecture class. Her lectures broadened my perspective on medieval design and construction methods, and offered me a closer insight into the world of craftsmanship, which enabled me to better understand the strict relationship espoused between a mason building a cathedral, and a shipwright building a ship. To my committee members, thank you for all of your guidance, support, and caring assistance throughout the course of this research. This work could have not been possible without Mauro Bondioli, who is one of the most prominent and unsurpassed researchers in the field of Venetian shipbuilding manuscripts. Mauro Bondioli introduced me to archival research when I first met him in 2007, and provided me with a wealth of information during 2007-2008. He kindly proposed the topic of the present study as my thesis subject, and brought to my attention the anonymous 16th-century manuscript Misure di vascelli etc. di…proto dell’Arsenale di Venetia as a document possibly recording measurements of Fausto’s ships. The technical aspects of Fausto’s quinquereme were studied under his patient guidance and viii unfailing assistance. Working on Renaissance shipbuilding manuscripts represents an intriguing challenge for the mind and a great pleasure for the spirit, but it requires, so to speak, the attitude and the patience of the pioneer. Mauro Bondioli greatly facilitated my work by guiding me thorough the cryptic texts of shipbuilding manuscripts.     Venice’s Marriage to the Sea Blog post by Jeanne Willoz-Egnor published May 31, 2019 This weekend marks the annual Festa della Sensa in Venice. Although the festival didn’t start until 1965 it commemorates and recreates the ancient traditional ceremony of Sposalizio del Mar, the event in which Venice is symbolically married to the sea. Hand-colored copperplate engraving titled The Doge in the Bucintoro Departing for the Porto di Lido on Ascension Day. The original artwork was created by Canaletto and engraved by Giovanni Battista Brustolo. This third state engraving was printed by Teodoro Viera in Venice sometime around 1787. [Accession# LE 831] The origins of the ceremony date to the period when Venice was a sovereign state (from 697 AD to 1797 AD). It commemorates two important events in the state’s history: the May 9, 1000 departure of Doge Pietro II Orseolo with a fleet on the successful mission to subdue Narentine pirates threatening Venetian power, trade and travel on the Adriatic and Doge Sebastiano Ziani’s successful negotiation of the Treaty of Venice in 1177. The treaty ended a long standing conflict between the Holy Roman Empire headed by Frederick Barbarossa and the Papacy. Following Orseolo’s victory, each year on Ascension Day Venice celebrated the Doge’s conquest of Dalmatia with a solemn procession of boats led by the doge’s maestà nave to the San Pietro di Castello where the Bishop blessed the doge. The procession then proceeded to the lido at San Nicolò, Venice’s entrée to the Adriatic Sea, where the prayer "for us and all who sail thereon, may the sea be calm and quiet" was offered.

    SANTA MARIA MANUELA SHIPS MANUAL FOR TRAINEE GUESTS WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION Santa Maria Manuela (SMM) was launched on May 10 1937, in Lisbon, Portugal. The ship was built in the CUF shipyard in 62 days, together with its sister ship Creoula. The moment when the hull of SMM touched the waters of the River Tagus was witnessed by thousands, capturing the hearts of the people of Portugal, and marking the beginning of an iconic journey. Between 1937 and 1993, SMM transported thousands of sailors to Newfoundland and Greenland in the pursuit of cod, the prize catch for the people of Portugal. Life was harsh onboard. Sailors had to contend with cramped cold conditions below decks, and above with the bitter chill of the north winds, frequent storms and long hours fishing the perilous seas of the Grand Banks in small boats. In 1940 a new danger emerged; the submarines of the II World War. Santa Maria Manuela is one of the last ships of the mythical White Fleet – a group of cod-fishing vessels that had their hulls painted white to avoid being torpedoed during the military conflicts. Between 2007 and 2010 the ship was rebuilt by the fishing group Pascoal, and subsequently was taken on by Recheio Cash & Carry, part of the Jeronimo Martins Group. The farsighted vision of the current owners has created a culture of sail training, expedition, exploration and team development aboard the Santa Maria Manuela. Passenger trainees are welcomed aboard as members of the sailing crew. During your voyage you will be given every opportunity get personally involved in the sailing of the ship.

    Cultural heritage The Recovery of manuscripts David RUNDLE ABSTRACT Manuscripts were the cornerstone of humanism. They had been the main vector for transmission of the ancient texts and culture in the Middle Ages. Most of them had nonetheless been lost or forgotten in remote libraries. In order to recover the ancient Greek and Latin texts they favoured, humanists went on a European quest to find these manuscripts. From Italy, at first, humanists travelled all across Europe, visiting convents and libraries, in search of the lost works of Tacitus, Cicero, etc. building and securing the antique legacy of European culture. This treatise dedicated to another prominent manuscript hunter, the pope Nicholas V, is a meditation on the loss of Roman culture. Manuscripts were humanism’s lifeblood, its inspiration and its purpose. The production of new books in a new, or revived, style of Latin and with a new, or revived, presentation on the page was central to their activities. But before they could even be conceived, there needed to be classical texts to be imitated. Behind the humanists’ practices lay an agenda of manuscript recovery all across Europe. They were conscious of themselves as cut off from the classical past and set themselves the challenge of discovering works which had not been seen—they said- —by scholars for centuries. In writing of their achievements in doing this, they exaggerated both their own heroic endeavours and the dire state that preceded them.

The novel is set in Ferrara in February, 1579, an Italian city at the height of its powers but deep in debt. Amid the aristocratic pomp and popular festivities surrounding the duke’s wedding to his third wife, the secret child of the city’s most celebrated singer goes missing. A street-smart debt collector and lovelorn bureaucrat are drawn into her increasingly desperate attempts to find her son, their efforts uncovering the brutal instruments of ostentation and domination that gave rise to what we now know as the Renaissance. In the critical component, I draw on the experience of writing The Angel of Ferrara and nonfiction works to explore the relationship between history and fiction. Beginning with a survey of the development of historical fiction since the inception of the genre’s modern form with the Walter Scott’s Waverley, I analyse the various paratextual interventions—prefaces, authors’ notes, acknowledgements—authors have used to explore and explain the use of factual research in their works. I draw on this to reflect in more detail at how research shaped the writing of the Angel of Ferrara and other recent historical novels, in particular Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall.
