IN THE GREEK AND ROMAN WORLD THROUGHOUT THE EIGHTH TO FIRST CENTURIES BC* Despite the dynamic development of navigation and shipbuilding technologies throughout the ancient world, nowhere else did this phenomenon manifest itself as significantly as in the Greek world1. Century after century this area exerted a special influence on the development of Roman maritime arts, not only during the Roman Republic but even as late as the Roman Empire. The other important source of standards for the Romans to follow were the Etruscans, although their role in the work of introducing the descendants of Romulus onto the vast realm of the Mediterranean appears far more difficult to establish. The more so that un- like the Greek world, Etruscan navigation, and especially Etruscan shipbuilding skills and technologies, still remain a little-explored territory in the present day. In the Greek written sources, warships (long and narrow) first appeared as early as in the Homeric poems: the Iliad and the Odyssey, where they were pres- ent in different forms, from smaller ships propelled by twenty men to warships with 50 or even 100 oars2. The conventional and traditional author of the two works, Homer, in his descriptions of the seemingly Achaean warships, obvi- ously presents warships of the far later period than the events depicted, although he fails to mention the type of warship characteristic of the eight century BC: the triacontor, a ship, as the name suggests, with 30 oars, 15 per each side. APPENDIX S Trireme Warfare in Herodotus §1. Herodotus describes a vigorous era in the history of the maritime traffic and warfare in the Mediterranean. Greek• and Phoenician colonies anchored far-flung trading networks north to the Black Sea and west along the Mrican and European coasts to Spain and even beyond the Straits of Gibraltar. b Sea lanes had to be policed, colonies protected, parochial navies developed and increased. Furthermore, naval strength, always a prerogative of coastal and island states, became an important factor in the expanding domains of inland powers such as Sparta' and Persia. The jostling of all these escalating commercial and political interests in the seas of the Mediterranean fostered developments in ship design, construction, and handling. -

Single-sailed ships were effective for voyages of short duration, undertaken with favourable winds. Ships with two masts could make long coastal voyages in the summer. Both these types had more or less severe limitations to sailing to windward. To sail any ship successfully in this mode it is necessary to be able to balance the sail plan accurately. This method of keeping course could not reach its full developemnt until more than two sails were available for manipulation. -

A series of prototypes built in Spain in that century incorporated concepts and technological solutions from both the Mediterranean and the Atlantic maritime traditions, and became the basis for this new type of vessel. The Spanish galleon was designed in response to changes in Atlantic trade routes at the beginning of the 16th century when, as a result of Spanish transoceanic expansion, new and more specialized vessels were needed for both the coastal defense of Spain and its overseas territories, as well as to escort the oceanic fleets. In November 1588, King Philip II of Spain ordered the construction of 12 new galleons of 500, 600, and 800 toneladas, four ships of each tonnage, specifically designed as warships. These galleons were to replace the losses that occurred after the failure of the Spanish Armada against England, since the chronic Spanish shortage of warships was aggravated by the loss of some of the best naval units. This decision marked the beginning of the largest shipbuilding program attempted in Spain until that moment. -
