IN THE GREEK AND ROMAN WORLD THROUGHOUT THE EIGHTH TO FIRST CENTURIES BC* Despite the dynamic development of navigation and shipbuilding technologies throughout the ancient world, nowhere else did this phenomenon manifest itself as significantly as in the Greek world1. Century after century this area exerted a special influence on the development of Roman maritime arts, not only during the Roman Republic but even as late as the Roman Empire. The other important source of standards for the Romans to follow were the Etruscans, although their role in the work of introducing the descendants of Romulus onto the vast realm of the Mediterranean appears far more difficult to establish. The more so that un- like the Greek world, Etruscan navigation, and especially Etruscan shipbuilding skills and technologies, still remain a little-explored territory in the present day. In the Greek written sources, warships (long and narrow) first appeared as early as in the Homeric poems: the Iliad and the Odyssey, where they were pres- ent in different forms, from smaller ships propelled by twenty men to warships with 50 or even 100 oars2. The conventional and traditional author of the two works, Homer, in his descriptions of the seemingly Achaean warships, obvi- ously presents warships of the far later period than the events depicted, although he fails to mention the type of warship characteristic of the eight century BC: the triacontor, a ship, as the name suggests, with 30 oars, 15 per each side. ACE’s Scandinavian Sojourn : A Southerner’s Perspective Story by: Richard Bostic, assisted by Ronny Cook When I went on the ACEspana trip back in 2009, it was by far one of the most amazing vacations I have ever experienced. In addition to getting to visit parks in a different culture than we see here, it is also a great opportunity to spend time with fellow enthusiasts and grow friendships while enjoying our common interests. When Scandinavia Sojourn was announced for the summer of 2011, I knew it was a trip I could not miss. Since the 2009 trip was my first trip to Europe I thought that there was no way the over- all experience could be better in Scandinavia. I was wrong. We landed in Helsinki, Finland around 1300 the day before we were required to be at the hotel to meet with the group. Helsinki is an interesting city and fairly new compared to many cities in Europe. Walking around the city you can see the Russian influence in the city’s architecture. In fact, many movies during the cold war would use Helsinki to shoot scenes that are supposed to be set in the Soviet Union. After making our way to the Crowne Plaza Hotel and getting a quick lunch at the hotel restaurant we decided to spend the remaining time that afternoon checking out some of the sites around our hotel. Some of these sites included the Temppeliaukio Church inside of a rock formation, the train station, Routatientori Square and National Theater, and a couple of the city’s art museums. -

APPENDIX S Trireme Warfare in Herodotus §1. Herodotus describes a vigorous era in the history of the maritime traffic and warfare in the Mediterranean. Greek• and Phoenician colonies anchored far-flung trading networks north to the Black Sea and west along the Mrican and European coasts to Spain and even beyond the Straits of Gibraltar. b Sea lanes had to be policed, colonies protected, parochial navies developed and increased. Furthermore, naval strength, always a prerogative of coastal and island states, became an important factor in the expanding domains of inland powers such as Sparta' and Persia. The jostling of all these escalating commercial and political interests in the seas of the Mediterranean fostered developments in ship design, construction, and handling. -

Hawaii’s Aloha Spirit Begins on Oahu Island Hawaii Honolulu and Island of Oahu – Images by Lee Foster by Lee Foster When the plane touches down in Hawaii, the magic of the eight major Islands in the Hawaiian group begins to infuse the sensibility of a traveler. First of all, a traveler from North America has just made a long voyage, 2,000 miles and fully five hours from western U.S. cities, or longer from Chicago and New York. After traversing long stretches of ocean, the islands suddenly appear, as improbable as they must have seemed to the first Polynesians who sailed and paddled their canoes from the South Seas to this site about 750 A.D. or possibly earlier. From out of nowhere the modern visitor alights into a fully-realized dream, Hawaii. When you leave the airplane, a lei may be put around your neck, if you are on a tour. If not, you may want to buy a lei at the airport, just to get into the spirit. Leis are sometimes made of vanda orchids or of plumeria. The perfume of the lei and the warm tropical air of Hawaii immediately bathe a visitor. A range of bright flowers can be seen everywhere, starting with bougainvillea or hibiscus, the state flower, giving a technicolor aura to Hawaii. Brightly floral aloha shirts, which appear so ostentatious on the mainland, seem immediately appropriate here. Then you begin observing people in this airport. The most striking aspect of the people is that their racial origins are diverse and are primarily from the Orient. -

Amusement Park Physics Amusement Park Physics and the new Secondary School Curriculum In the past 18 months, the educational system has seen a shift in the science curriculum and changes to how that curriculum is delivered. The current curriculum is more inquiry based with a focus on questioning, predicting, communication, planning and conducting investigations. In addition, students are asked to analyse not only the data they collect, but also the process that was used to collect the data. The curriculum for Science 8 has changed. Although forces are not directly in the current Grade 8 curriculum, inquiry and investigation are at the forefront. Amusement Park Physics can now be applied to any number of classes as they all include an inquiry / investigative component. Teachers are able to adapt or enhance the curriculum packages currently supplied by Amusement Park Physics as they see fit. This gives you, as an educator, tremendous flexibility in terms of how you and your class spend your time at Playland. You could focus on one ride and do an in-depth study or perhaps investigate similar rides and compare them. -

Mason2 1University of Greenwich, London, UK 2 Abstract The Cutty Sark, built in 1869 in Dumbarton, is the last intact composite tea clipper ship [1]. One of the last tea clippers built she took part in the tea races back from China. These races caught the public imagination of the day and were widely reported in newspapers [2]. They developed from a desire for 'fresh' tea and the first ship to return with the new season's tea could charge a higher price for the cargo. Clipper ships were built for speed rather than carrying capacity. The hull efficiency of the Cutty Sark and her contemporaries is currently unknown. However, with modern CFD techniques, virtual experiments can be performed to model the fluid flow past the hull and so based on the shear stress and the pressure over the surface of the hull to calculate the resistance. In order to compare the hull against other ships three other ships were selected. The Farquharson, an East Indiaman built in 1820 [3]; the Thermopylae, another composite clipper built in 1868 which famously raced the Cutty Sark in 1872 [1]; and finally the Erasmo a later Italian all-steel construction 4-masted barque built in 1903[4]. Fig. 1 shows images of these ships. As only one of these ships exists today, and she no longer sails, 3D geometries were constructed fromlines plans of the ships hulls. -
