An annotated list of Italian Renaissance humanists, their writings about Jews, and involvement in Hebrew studies, ca. 1440-ca.1540 This list, arranged in chronological order by author’s date of birth, where known, is a preliminary guide to Italian humanists’ Latin and vernacular prose and poetic accounts of Jews and Judaic culture and history from about 1440 to 1540. In each case, I have sought to provide the author’s name and birth and death dates, a brief biography highlighting details which especially pertain to his interest in Jews, a summary of discussions about Jews, a list of relevant works and dates of composition, locations of manuscripts, and a list of secondary sources or studies of the author and his context arranged alphabetically by author’s name. Manuscripts are listed in alphabetical order by city of current location; imprints, as far as possible, by ascending date. Abbreviations: DBI Dizionario biografico degli Italiani (Rome: Istituto della enciclopedia italiana, 1960-present) Kristeller, Iter Paul Oskar Kristeller, Iter Italicum: A Finding List of Uncatalogued or Incompletely Catalogued Humanistic Manuscripts of the Renaissance in Italian and Other Libraries; Accedunt alia itinera, 6 vols (London: Warburg Institute; Leiden: E. J. Brill, 1963-1991) Simon Atumano (d. c. 1380) Born in Constantinople and became a Basilian monk in St John of Studion there. Bishop of Gerace in Calabria from 1348 until 1366, and Latin archbishop of Thebes until 1380. During his time in Thebes, which was the capital of the Catalan duchy of Athens, he studied Hebrew and in the mid- to late-1370s he began work on a polyglot Latin-Greek-Hebrew Bible dedicated to Pope Urban VI. -

The manuscripts is a masterpiece of 9th Century “information technology”, combing a primary text, the Homeric Iliad, with secondary texts in the form of scholiastic notes, and other metadata in the form of critical signs. Thus the images of this manuscript provide wide access to an invaluable window into two millennia of the history of the Homeric tradition. INTRODUCTION In May of 2007 an international team of Classicists, conservators, photographers, and imaging experts came together in the Biblioteca Marciana—the Library of St. Mark—in Venice, in order to bring to light a cultural treasure that had been hidden away for over 100 years. 113 Ceremony and Conflict in Fifteenth-Century France: Lancastrian Ceremonial Entries into French Towns, 1415-1431 Neil Murphy he renewal of the Hundred Years' War by Henry V led to the rapid T expansion of Lancastrian power in northern France. Although England's military campaigns have been studied in great detail, historians have paid little attention to the Lancastrian monarchy's use of ceremony to establish its rule in France.! This article will principally focus on the ceremonial entry, which was a dynamic and versatile rite that could be adapted to suit the rapidly changing conditions engendered by Lancastrian successes in France. The ceremonial entry underwent a period of intense development in England and France during the later Middle Ages. Following the inclusion of multifaceted dramatic performances in England from 1377 and in France from 1380, entries became increasing complex (Kipling 6). A ceremonial entry was the moment at which a ruler took formal possession of a town, and these entries were used frequently in zones of persistent conflict, such as northern France, where towns regularly passed from one lord to another. Indeed, the Lancastrian rulers of France made at least twenty-three ceremonial entries in the sixteen years running from 1415 to 1431. This article will look at Lancastrian ceremonial entries during the period running from Henry V's invasion of France in August 1415 to his son's coronation at Paris in December 1431. It will provide a wider contextualisation of the Lancastrian monarchy's use of ceremony and relate the developments made to the form and function of the entry to the wider political and economic conditions created by war in northern France. -

ch1.qxd 10/18/1999 2:02 PM Page 1 CHAPTER 1 Lapo’s Life and Work In the years that preceded the more or less permanent reentry of Pope Eugenius IV into Rome, the Renaissance humanist movement was in the middle of an interesting phase. At that time a large component of its members consisted of intellectuals who lacked ‹xed institutional places. Humanism—this new ars whose curricular focus was the studia humani- tatis—had still to ‹nd its place in society and was dependent largely on patrons. One practitioner of this new art was the Florentine Lapo da Cas- tiglionchio the Younger, who died in 1438 at the age of thirty-three. One of his most interesting cultural bequests to us is a treatise that he wrote in the year of his death, entitled De curiae commodis, or On the Bene‹ts of the Curia. In this dialogue, Lapo offers us a portrait of the papal curia that is written elegantly, learnedly, earnestly, and even angrily. It is a human document that is alive with information not only for intellectual historians but for social and cultural historians as well. The goal of this study is to discuss this dialogue in its intellectual and social contexts. A critical edition of the Latin text along with an annotated English transla- tion follows the discussion. This ‹rst chapter offers an examination of Lapo’s life and work, fol- lowed by a brief look at the historiography on the dialogue. Chapter 2 deals with the literary context of the dialogue and examines a compli- cated passage on the virtues, which I believe can serve as an interpretive key for the piece as a whole. -

Curial Humanism Seen Through the Prism of the Papal Library
CURIAL HUMANISM SEEN THROUGH THE PRISM OF THE PAPAL LIBRARY Massimo Miglio The multifaceted historical perception of Italian humanism, especially with regard to the Quattrocento, that has evolved in the last several years makes it necessary to define humanism’s diverse identities as articulated in the main cultural centers of Italy, such as Milan, Venice, Padua, and Naples.1 For this reason, it is also necessary to attempt to define the characteristics of humanistic culture that developed at the papal court and to evaluate its ever evolving nature because of the particular personalities of some of the popes (Nicholas V, Pius II, Paul II, and Sixtus IV, for example) but, above all, because of the unique socio-cultural composition of the Roman court, which was made up of laymen, clerics, and intellectuals from different regions of Italy and Europe. These individuals were simultaneously called upon to address issues that were both religious and secular. The Roman court was unquestionably atypical with respect to other courts. This uniqueness was due to its mingling of the spiritual with the temporal, to its having to assert itself vis-à-vis the city of Rome and the Papal States as well as all of Christendom, to its being strongly rooted in the social reality of Italy, and to its international composition even though the papal court, contrary to popular belief, was composed primarily of Italians; between 1471 and 1527 around 60% of the court personnel were Italian. The Roman court and the papal Curia (I should note, however, that the Curia constituted only part of the Roman court) were at this time the court par excellence. -

Civic Humanism the Rediscovery of Ancient Texts and the Growing Belief
Civic Humanism The rediscovery of ancient texts and the growing belief that they expressed great truths worthy of study during the period in Italy known as the Renaissance challenged the dominant values of the medieval world from which it emerged. Ancient texts, such as the letters of Cicero to his friend Atticus—rediscovered by Petrarch—and the guide to oration by Quintilian, celebrated urban life. These texts showed that that the active life in cities—that of statesmen, lawyers, notaries, merchants, and, increasingly, artisans—was one of value. Also, these texts demonstrated how one could and should persuade, praise, criticize, and encourage others to accept or reject decisions. This was especially important in cities such as republican Florence, where decisions were made by popular vote in the main governing council. Men in cities needed the skills of rhetoric and the ability to deliver persuasive speeches and write persuasive prose. Thus, the lessons of ancient texts served the needs and purposes of civic life. The revival of the study of these texts also included a revival of the educational curriculum laid out in their content. Described by Cicero as the studia humanitatis, those studies befitting of free men, the urban elite in Italian cities began pursuing a curriculum of history, oratory, poetry, grammar, moral philosophy, and ethics. This new learning focused on studying the classics in their original form and language, adopting classical antiquity as a model and standard for life. This curriculum highlighted ancient examples of good character, moral development, and endowment of dignity and virtue. These studies were concerned with lessons men needed in daily life in order to withstand the blows of fortune, make sound moral decisions, and display eloquence.
