Palestinian Christianity, a Prelude to Iconoclasm........................................................................................................162 5 Preface At the end of the ancient world and at the early medieval times two great powers, Byzantium and the Arab-Islamic states, were engaged in a constant struggle. Nevertheless, in spite of the continuous warfare between these two superpowers we can glimpse frequent mutual interferences in various aspects of their civilizations. It is the aim of this paper first to offer a general background of the Byzantine and Arab empires designed to place each of them in a meaningful context and facilitate an understanding of their historical significance. The perspective in this part, as in the whole paper, is not from the Western viewpoint or indeed from any other. The perspective is to present the course of historical events as it ebbs and flows over centuries in a balanced way. Wars and military matters are necessarily treated but there is a definite tilt towards socio-economic aspects. Actually the cause of undertaking the topic of “Byzantium and the Arabs: Rivalry and Reconciliation” is to discuss a case of international interdisciplinary subject. It is for this purpose that the focus of this paper, after a broad introduction, is to emphasize the cultural relations between Byzantium and the Arabs at the time an unceasing struggle between these two superpowers was taking place. The most important cultural interchanges in literature, art, maritime technology and commerce will be discussed. On the one hand, a bird’s eye view of the above aspects is given, and on the other some new elements are presented. Among them a discussion of the Kufic or Pseudo-Kufic decorations in the church of Hosios Loukas in Greece and the aniconic images of some Byzantine churches on the island of Naxos. A short account of the most salient characteristics of both the Byzantine and Arab-Islamic civilizations will be presented before the discussion of the cultural interchanges. 6 Acknowledgements It is a great pleasure to thank everyone who helped me write my dissertation successfully.

Burton N THE CHRISTIAN WORLD of Constantinople, in the twelfth century A.D., there was a revival of the ancient Greek novel, I replete with pagan gods and pagan themes. The aim of this paper is to draw attention to the crucial role of Christian themes such as the eucharist and the resurrection in the shaping and recreation of the ancient pagan Greek world in the Byzan­ tine Greek novels. Traditionally scholars have focused on similarities to the ancient Greek novels in basic plot elements, narrative tech­ niques, and the like. This has often resulted in a general dismissal of the twelfth-century Greek novels as imitative and unoriginal.1 Yet a revision of this judgment has begun to take place.2 Scholars have noted that there are themes and imagery in these novels that would sound contemporary to many of their Byzantine readers, for example, ceremonial throne scenes and 1 Thus B. Beginning with the question of how cultural products like the Fulla doll come to exist, I argue that the Fulla doll serves as an example of the process of creolization whereby non-Western peoples mobilize local customs and beliefs to transform globally-distributted consumer goods, thus re-contextualizing and assigning new meanings to these goods. Through an analysis of thirteen animated Fulla doll advertisements, I argue that the Barbie doll’s ethnic, religious and gendered identity has been re-contextualized to transform her into an Arab-Muslim woman, the Fulla doll.

The textual, pictorial, and archaeological evidence of Byzantine maritime activities is collected in this study. This limited evidence is evaluated in order to gain a better understanding of Byzantine maritime activities such as shipbuilding and maritime commerce. Acee All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT David Harnish, Advisor This thesis focuses on sha’bi music, a style of popular music in the Arab world. More specifically, it discusses the role of women in sha’bi music, focusing on singers Nancy Ajram and Haifa Wehbe as examples of female pop singers. I take a feminist approach to understanding the lives, images, and legacies of two of the most influential female singers of the twentieth century, Umm Kulthum and Fairouz, and then I explore how these legacies have impacted the careers and societal expectations of Ajram and Wehbe. Several issues are explicated in the thesis, including the historic progression of popular music, the impacts of globalization and westernization, and the status of women as performers in the Arab world. The fan bases of the various female sha’bi singers are explored to examine why people are drawn to popular music, how youth cultures utilize music to define their generations, and why some people in the Arab world have problems with this music and/or with the singers: their lyrics, clothing, dancing bodies, and music videos. My ethnography on these issues among Arabs in Bowling Green, Ohio, reveals how members of the diaspora address the tensions of this music and the images of female performers.

    EÏÏËÓÈο 57.1 (2007) SUICIDE IN BYZANTIUM The evidence of the sources on suicide from the 4th to the 15th century in Byzantium is rather limited and the scarcity of information explains why the subject has not been investigated, save for the motif of taking one’s own life in the Greek Novel from Antiquity to the Comnenian period.1 In the Judaic and Christian traditions suicide was condemned as an act of impiety towards God who created man. The issue had been debated to some extent among the Greek thinkers because self-inflicted death was not regarded as «in accordance with nature». The Stoics supported some kinds of suicide (when the body becomes a burden to the soul, for instance), and the Platonic passage in Phaedo caused some ambiguity as to its final message with regard to Socrates’ death, his closing words in particular that man is ethically bound to preserve his life. The Romans also were thought by and large to accept suicide. During the Christian persecutions some of the martyrs – devote women and virgins – chose self-destruction to escape rape, defilement and humiliation. Such incidents were known to Eusebius of Caesarea for he mentions women martyrs leaping from high places to their death, or drowning in a river or in the sea. In the face of dishonour and violation by pagans, self-destruction was preferred and was even praised. Ioannes Chryso- stomos dedicated a homily to the three martyrs Bernike, Prosdoke, and Domnine, who chose to drown themselves in a river in the city of Hierapolis rather than to be humiliated (PG 50, 629-640).

The study focuses on the erotic narrative in the ro- mance and articulations of feminine subjectivity. If we read this text in relation to Byzantine literature, and the Greek novel tradition more gen- erally, we could see new things in the courtly romance.
