Moloney 2015 Abstract Investigation into underwater archaeology began, inevitably, with the investigation of shipwrecks. For decades whole divisions of our discipline have focused on studying the intricate characteristics and mechanisms involved in the propulsion, construction, and manipulation of ships themselves (e.g. nautical archaeology). However, as Mortimer Wheeler noted, “the archaeologist is digging up, not things, but people” (Wheeler 1954: 13), so how do we extract information about those crewing these ships from shipwrecks? In this study I examine the spatial organization of ships in an effort to reconstruct the social dynamics of shipboard society. Shipwrecks are often the result of site formation processes that ‘spill’ the artifacts that are integral to our ability to describe shipboard life. In order to adequately examine the nuances of shipboard culture we must combine an understanding of the material culture associated with shipwrecks with an exploration of the structures of the ships themselves. The quantitative and qualitative investigation of socio-spatial organization has been engaged for several decades within the fields of architecture and urban planning. In particular, the theories and methods of space syntax analysis have been utilized to successfully examine the relationships between spatial organization and social interaction within an urban context. Moreover, these techniques have been proven effective for the investigation of archaeological material as well. In this study I utilize these existing tools and apply them to the study of ships and shipboard culture. Through a spatial understanding of ship structures I will suggest connections between spatial organization and social relationships aboard ships, and the culture of shipboard societies as a whole. ii Acknowledgements This dissertation, and the research therein, could not have completed without the support of so many people and institutions.   • I Am Descending Into the Depths, Something I Have Done So Many Times Before
    I am descending into the depths, something I have done so many times before. As always I am repeating the same actions, with the same attention and coolness; but I also realise that my desire to see the wreck is something more, almost a hunger. The water is so clear that suddenly, on the edge of my vision I think I can see the bottom, but I know that it is too soon, too shallow. I realise that it is not the seabed below as I start to discern two enormous, powerful propellers. One of them is completely wrapped by a trawl net that passes over the rudder and disappears into the depths. I start to see the other propeller and the gigantic hull of the wreck, so big that I mistake it for the bottom. I know for certain that I, and the rest of the team following me down the shot-line will soon be exploring the final resting place of the Szent Istvan. To me the Szent Istvan is more than a wreck; she is a magnet, a piece of history that has drawn a few explorers to her. Her story has come to symbolise the tumultuous events of the last year of the Great War and the lives of the men involved in her story: Admiral Miklos Horthy de Nagybanya, Commander in Chief of the Imperial Royal Austro-Hungarian Navy, and Lieutenant Commander Luigi Rizzo, Commander of the IV squadron of the Royal Italian Navy. The wreck stretches away from me. Directly ahead is one of the propellers, I can't exactly make out its dimensions, it soars over me.

Please contact them directly if you wish to use their material. 1 Hello All It will not have escaped the notice of many of us that the month of July, 2009, with the deaths of three old gentlemen, saw human bonds being broken with the Great War. This is not a place for obituaries, collectively the UK’s national press has done that task more adequately (and internationally, I suspect likewise for New Zealand, the USA and the other protagonists of that War), but it is in a way sad that they have died. Harry Patch and Henry Allingham could recount events from the battles at Jutland and Passchendaele, and their recollections have, in recent years, served to educate youngsters about the horrors of war, and yet? With age, memory can play tricks, and the facts of the past can be modified to suit the beliefs of the present. For example, Harry Patch is noted as having become a pacifist, and to exemplify that, he stated that he had wounded, rather than killed, a German who was charging Harry’s machine gun crew with rifle and bayonet, by Harry firing his Colt revolver. I wonder? My personal experience in the latter years of my military career, having a Browning pistol as my issued weapon, was that the only way I could have accurately hit a barn door was by throwing the pistol at it! Given the mud and the filth, the clamour and the noise, the fear, a well aimed shot designed solely to ‘wing’ an enemy does seem remarkable.

    Performance Evaluation of the 19th Century Clipper Ship Cutty Sark: A Comparative Study C. Tonry1, M. Patel1, C. Bailey1, W. Davies2, J. Harrap2, E. Kentley2, P. Mason2 1University of Greenwich, London, UK 2 Abstract The Cutty Sark, built in 1869 in Dumbarton, is the last intact composite tea clipper ship [1]. One of the last tea clippers built she took part in the tea races back from China. These races caught the public imagination of the day and were widely reported in newspapers [2]. They developed from a desire for 'fresh' tea and the first ship to return with the new season's tea could charge a higher price for the cargo. Clipper ships were built for speed rather than carrying capacity. The hull efficiency of the Cutty Sark and her contemporaries is currently unknown. However, with modern CFD techniques, virtual experiments can be performed to model the fluid flow past the hull and so based on the shear stress and the pressure over the surface of the hull to calculate the resistance. In order to compare the hull against other ships three other ships were selected. The Farquharson, an East Indiaman built in 1820 [3]; the Thermopylae, another composite clipper built in 1868 which famously raced the Cutty Sark in 1872 [1]; and finally the Erasmo a later Italian all-steel construction 4-masted barque built in 1903[4]. Fig. 1 shows images of these ships. As only one of these ships exists today, and she no longer sails, 3D geometries were constructed fromlines plans of the ships hulls.

  • Hornblower's Ships
    Names of Ships from the Hornblower Books. Introduction Hornblower’s biographer, C S Forester, wrote eleven books covering the most active and dramatic episodes of the life of his subject. In addition, he also wrote a Hornblower “Companion” and the so called three “lost” short stories. There were some years and activities in Hornblower’s life that were not written about before the biographer’s death and therefore not recorded. However, the books and stories that were published describe not only what Hornblower did and thought about his life and career but also mentioned in varying levels of detail the people and the ships that he encountered. Hornblower of course served on many ships but also fought with and against them, captured them, sank them or protected them besides just being aware of them. Of all the ships mentioned, a handful of them would have been highly significant for him. The Indefatigable was the ship on which Midshipman and then Acting Lieutenant Hornblower mostly learnt and developed his skills as a seaman and as a fighting man. This learning continued with his experiences on the Renown as a lieutenant. His first commands, apart from prizes taken, were on the Hotspur and the Atropos. Later as a full captain, he took the Lydia round the Horn to the Pacific coast of South America and his first and only captaincy of a ship of the line was on the Sutherland. He first flew his own flag on the Nonsuch and sailed to the Baltic on her. In later years his ships were smaller as befitted the nature of the tasks that fell to him.

His books include The RAF and Trade Defence 1919-1945 (1995), Air Power in the Age of Total War (1999) and Monty’s Men: The British Army 1944-5 (2013). His history of the RAF (co-authored with Paul Beaver) will be published by Oxford University Press in 2018. Abstract: From 1939 to 1945 RAF Coastal Command played a crucial role in maintaining Britain’s maritime communications, thus securing the United Kingdom’s ability to wage war against the Axis powers in Europe. Its primary role was in confronting the German U-boat menace, particularly in the 1940-41 period when Britain came closest to losing the Battle of the Atlantic and with it the war. The importance of air power in the war against the U-boat was amply demonstrated when the closing of the Mid-Atlantic Air Gap in 1943 by Coastal Command aircraft effectively brought victory in the Atlantic campaign.
