Journal Providing news and information for the Parish of Jacobstow February/March 2019

Delivery free to every household in the Parish otherwise 50p www.jacobstowvillage.co.uk Editorial by Sarah I am really struggling with the size of some of the lorries I am coming across on the A39. I know modern life dictates that supplies have to be moved on the road system, but I think a few contributing factors are really adding to the headache. Some of the rot definitely set in with the new houses being built in , the number of huge earth moving trucks that rumbled up and down for a long period of time really stretched the patience. Now I am seeing a lot more lorries with logos on the side,of new businesses that have recently opened in Bude, B&M and ScrewFix to name a few. The A39 was really not designed to cope with this volume of traffic or indeed the size of some of these monster trucks. I recently held back and witnessed two kings of the road trying to creep past each other on the bend just past Dimmer Chapel, truly a breath holding moment. I totally accept that we are our own worst enemy on this situation and we are driving this need for more and more supplies. I also accept that I really do not know what the answer is, as apart from moving the whole road I really don’t know what to offer as a solution. Answers on a post card please, but don’t bother posting it, that will involve a Post Office lorry trundling up the A39 and making me gnash my teeth! Page 3 Summary of Minutes of Meeting held on 8th January, 2019 Cllr. Osborne chaired the monthly meeting with a full attendance of Councillors, County Cllr. Nicky Chopak and two members of the public. The meeting began with Mr Alyn Shott and Mr Peter Moore from Cornwall Rural Housing Assoc. informing Councillors that they had purchased land east of Oakdene, Edgar Road, , that had been advertised with Outline Planning permission. They are planning to build 100% affordable houses to rent. They will come back to the Council with their plans at a later date. Planning Application PA18/11756- Penhallym, Week St. Mary Conversion of disused domestic garage to dependent relatives annexe - Clerk to reply saying Councillors have concerns regarding this application. They would like a stipulation that the annex can only be used for a dependent relative and not as another holiday let. Also that it cannot be sold separately to the main dwelling.

In 2019 I hope to press on with making not just a great place to grow up or study; but also a great place to set up a business. For this to become a reality we need to make sure that North Cornwall is online, and broadband internet provision and mobile coverage is extended to as many people as possible. I see that the A39 between and Bude has been officially ranked as the 15th best road trip in the whole of the UK according to Boundless. I am sad to announce that local councillor, member of my team and above all my friend, Val Bugden-Cawsey, has died from cancer. Her strength during her battle with cancer was inspirational, and during that time she continued to support and give back to our community with her ‘Val walks tall’ campaign which raised thousands to help support research for Advanced Malignant Melanoma for Plymouth Hospital Charity. Page 6 WEATHERWISE by Monitor The rainfall figures for the last two months of 2018. Quite wet months as is usual for the end of the year, November saw 6.62" collected at , with 7.31" for December. The total for 2018 was 44.53" which is fairly typical and about the average over the last five years. Whilst a number of days saw rain amounts bordering on 1"during the 24 hour periods, the 7th of December saw the River Ottery peak at 1.09m in the morning after extensive overnight rain with an hour or so of quite heavy bursts, along with strong squalls. There were a number of thunder showers observed over the past two months, seven of which gave thunder locally. It seems a more common event in the winter these days, the summer not being very active in recent years. Of note was an interesting event on the13th of December. Since around 10 in the morning, the rainfall radar showed persistent light rain and drizzle over the area but not a trace was observed locally. Reports to the contrary were received from Bude, and even but nothing was observed here. This was curious, and I can only conclude that the stiff SE wind ( which also persisted during the day ) created a dry line at mid-level which evaporated the rain before it reached the surface. Whilst this is not unusual during the warmer months, it is rarely observed in the winter. Although the surface temperature only managed 8.5° during the day, I noted that at around 6000' the air was somewhat warmer but there wasn't enough of a depressed dew-point to cause the effect. Most odd...... At the close of 2018, there are currently no indications of any particularly cold conditions, but there are signs of an intense blocking high pressure developing which may well settle matters down over the New Year. Hopefully, we won’t see another very cold snap in early March, the last one didn't do our apple trees any good at all!

It combines the games of snooker and pool, creating a game that is not as com- plicated as as snooker but is more tech- nically challenging than pool. The photo shows Lenios presenting Richard Lloyd from Bude with the winning trophy and cheque at the Snoopool Club Trophy Competition which took place on 8th and 9th January at Crackington Snooker Club. Runner up was Paul Martin. Com- panies who sponsored the competition were KJ Bromell, La Bocca, Redsmart Printing, Blinkhorns and Prodigy Audio Systems Ltd. Page 12 Bob‛s gardening spot February is the ideal month to start sowing hardy perennials if you have a small propagator or a sunny window sill. Plants to sow are lupins, delphiniums, pinks and many others. You can start chitting your early spuds to plant when the ground warms up, or in grow bags. Early peas, broad beans, beetroot and plenty of other vegetables are all worth considering. In March you should be planting snow drops, lilly of the valley and other spring flowering bulbs. As your fuchsias start to pick up, take cuttings when the shoots are about 3-4 inches long. If your grass is looking ragged you can start to mow it, but be ready to repair any bare patches. Do this by giving the patch a good rake, mix some grass seed with a little compost and sprinkle it over the patch. Cov- er it with clear plastic sheet, pegged down, but cut a slit to let the water in. Whatever you get up to, enjoy your garden. Bob

Page 18 Hooray for Tom at Parcelforce! By Marion McDonald Back in November last year, I thought my old table mats were looking a bit worn and, as Christmas was coming up, I decided to replace them. I could not find any new ones to my liking and, as my old ones came from IKEA many moons ago, I looked on their website to see if by any chance they still stocked them and, to my surprise and delight, they did. I didn’t fancy the long trek up to Exeter and back, so decided to buy them on line and duly paid for postage and packing, which was far cheaper than the cost of the petrol would have been. I immediately received two emails, one from IKEA confirming the order and one from Parcelforce, saying my goods would be delivered on the 17th and giving me a tracking number. All great so far. Well, the 17th came and went with no delivery but I gave it a couple of days and then looked at the tracking of my parcel. To my surprise it said, “Unable to deliver, insufficient address, returned to Exeter depot” I then checked the IKEA email and discovered that the first line of my address was missing. “Marion McDonald, Wainhouse Corner, Bude” would certainly prove difficult. I phoned Parcelforce and a very helpful (so I thought) female ‘advisor’ seemed to understand my problem, sounded as if she was typing lots of information into a computer and then asked me when I would like the parcel delivered. “Asap” I replied “Tomorrow?” she asked “Great, thanks” I said, whilst thinking, “Good luck with that, Black Friday is only a day away!” Sure enough, tomorrow came and went and the next day. So Saturday found me sitting on the phone to Parcelforce for ages, listening to music and being told that my call was important to them. Whereupon I screamed in frustration and gave up. I forgot about it for a couple of days, until I returned home from my fitness class in Bude and was phoned by my fitness teacher, saying she had had a very weird call from a guy named Tom at Parcel Force, who asked if she knew Marion McDonald. She was very suspicious and asked him why, so he explained that he was trying to deliver a parcel to me and was looking up my name and Jacobstow on the internet and had found an article that I had written for the Journal about the Fitness League, which included Heather, the teacher’s, contact number. He phoned her; she phoned me and gave me his number . I phoned him and left a message with my full address and hey presto the parcel arrived the next day!! What great service! Thank you so much to Tom for his diligence. My Christmas table looked great with my new table mats. P.S. Does anyone know Tom at Parcelforce?

Looking at the astronomical calendar, the first day of spring is 20th March. The Phenological method records dates of reoccurring natural phenomena such as flowering. For meteorologists spring starts on 1st March and runs until 31st May. 2. Snow? Many people say you're more likely to see snow at Easter than at Christmas. This is born out by statistics to some extent - snow or sleet falls on average 3.9 days in December, compared to 4.2 days in March. 3. Vernal Equinox: The first day of spring, the vernal equinox, has 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness. 4. The warmest spring… The warmest spring on record was 2011 with an average daytime temperature of 9.2°C. 5. ...and the coldest spring was the spring of 1962, with an average daytime maximum of 5.8°C. 6. The wettest spring, 1947 saw the wettest spring to date with 331.7 mm of rain. 7. Average temperatures. The average mean temperature for spring is 7.7°C. 8. Something in the air? Sense of smell can be more acute in spring as there is usually more moisture in the air. 9. It isn't the start of the pollen season. Spring is often associated with the start of the pollen season. In actual fact some pollen types can release as early as January. 10. The sunniest spring The sunniest spring was in 1948, in which a total of 558 sunshine hours were recorded. Page 24 We all enjoyed our traditional Christmas Party at the last meeting of 2018 with a lovely spread of festive treats. Our party organisers caused much laughter, as always, with games and competitions, carol singing and secret Santa presents. A great finish to our 80th Year! On 10th January Michelle Barker from the Costume Rooms, Bude, shared her passion for researching and re-creating heritage fashions. She showed us an example of the many layers of clothing worn in the 17th Century and how women and children were literally sewn and pinned into their garments! It was interesting to hear how little is documented about historic clothing and its construction and how Michelle has studied the fine details of preserved items as part of her research. A fascinating talk that helped us to appreciate the reproduction costumes seen in period dramas and also the practicality of modern day clothing! Our next meetings are: 14th Feb when Mrs Sue Ede will be talking about her Grand European Voyage: Amsterdam to Budapest 14th March Annual General Meeting As reported in the previous Journal, the Cornwall Federation of Women’s Institutes is celebrating it’s Centenary this year and there are monthly events to commemorate this. On Saturday 16th Feb there is a Cake Fest where the guest judge and demonstrator will be Christine Jensen of Peboryon Cakes who appeared in Channel 4’s Extreme Cake Makers.

[email protected] Page 26 Our walk took place on a cold clear and bright day on the 22nd November with eight of us walking. We had three special guests as Doreen’s daughter was visiting from Canada with her two children, Tilly and Reid. It was so nice to have children on the walk! Instead of meeting in the school car park, we had arranged to all meet at Church. Even though I have lived here for over thirty years, I had never been there so it was lovely to discover somewhere new. The church has a holy well and Mary explained this to us and the children. Inside the church, we looked at the bell ringing chart (see photo- campanologists’ sheet music) and admired the visual tributes to the 1st World War. We stopped in the grounds and enjoyed the hot chocolate and cake provided by Mary, and biscuits from Sue. As the walk was quite short, we spontaneously decided to drive on to Roughtor, although Sue was unable to join us for this. The group walked to the top, while Doreen and I went for part of the way and then waited and chatted in the car park. It was great to be out and enjoying the weather and our beautiful surroundings in good company.

Page 32 Page 33 Page 34 Arts and Crafts Group The group met for an extended all day session on 20th November to make felt hats. The day was led by Mary Carter who kindly brought a wonderful, colourful array of materials as well as a wooden block to shape the hats. Jeanne made delicious soup and bread to share, which spurred us on. We worked to copy the beautiful example Mary had made, and after layering, rubbing, rolling and shap- ing, we all completed the day with recognisable hats of all hues that just needed a bit of tweaking at home. Several of these were worn proudly at the group’s Christmas get together at the Wier. We are looking forward to sessions from January in Ceramics, Papier Mache and Batik amongst others. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Tues- days of the month from 2-4 and if interested in joining us, please ring Jeanne on 01840 230113.

For the love of learning at Jacobstow Primary School and Preschool. What did the Romans do…? Children in year 3 using the space and freedom of out- door learning to investigate the life of the Romans. They made shields and sheltered from attack under them, mak- ing a not so classic ‘testudo’.

Page 35 Page 36 Those who returned . . . . Of the 26 men who returned from The Great War in 1914-1918 and started to live a normal life “fit for heroes”, I have only found details of a few from local sources. Anyone who knows anything about the others or I have the details wrong please let me know so I can keep records in the Jacobstow Archives. W. Bellamy - He played Bass Drum in St Gennys Silver Band. J. Cobbledick - became a road man. E E Cory - It was reported in Bude Stratton Post that he had shell shock in May 1818. He was later invalided home and after the war had a grant to set himself up as a taxi driver for the people of St Gennys .Later he took over Trelay farm. During the 2nd War he was a member of St Gennys Home Guard after that war he became a parish Cory Councillor, a rural councillor and a Cornwall councillor H Dinnis - farmed at Higher Exe. W Gilbert - farm labourer. J Heard - member of Jacobstow Home Guard. W Marshall - has the garage at Wainhouse Corner. J Parsons - farmer at Trehausa and Jacobstow Home Guard. W Parsons - blacksmith by Jacobstow Parish Hall. W Penfound - returned to build a bungalow and continued his trade as a carpenter and wheelwright. He suffered ill health and ended up at Tehidy TB Sanatorium. He was also in the Home Guard. C Sandercock - ran the other garage and Wainhouse Stores. Penfound J or JH Uglow - had shell shock and lived at Ferrets Cross and his wife collected the rates. Anyone who has relatives who were in the 2nd World War I would love to know name, rank any information of where they went and what they did when they returned.
