Afonso V, 5300-121 Bragança, Portugal Abstract: Seaweeds, i.e. macroalgae that occupy the littoral zone, are a great source of compounds with diverse applications; their types and content greatly determine the potential applications and commercial values. Algal polysaccharides, namely the hydrocolloids: agar, alginate and carrageenan, as well as other non-jellifying polysaccharides and oligosaccharides, are valuable bioproducts. Likewise, pig- ments, proteins, amino acids and phenolic compounds are also important, exploitable compounds. For the longest time the dominant market for macroalgae has been the food industry. More recently, several other industries have increased their interest in algal-derived products, e.g. cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and more recently, as a s ource of feedstock for biorefinery applications. This manuscript re- views the chemical composition of dominant macroalgae, as well as their potential added-value products and applications. Particular at- tention is devoted to the macroalgal species from the Iberian Peninsula. This is located in the Southwest of Europe and is influenced by the distinct climates of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, representing a rich spot of marine floral biodiversity. -

Few of the numerous marine macroalgae are currently exploited. In this study, the contents of nutritional compounds from nine common North Atlantic red macroalgae were compared: the lipid content was low and constant among the species, whereas the fatty acid profiles indicated that these species constitute interesting sources of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). The dominating essential and non-essential amino acids were lysine and leucine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, and arginine, respectively. The amino acid score of the nine algae varied from 44% to 92%, the most commonly first limiting amino acid be- ing histidine. -

Silva Festschrift Marine Algal (Seaweed) Collections at the Natural History Museum, London (BM): Past, Present and Future Ian Tittley Department of Botany, The Natural History Museum, London SW7 5BD ABSTRACT The specimen collections and libraries of the Natural History Museum (BM) constitute an important reference centre for macro marine algae (brown, green and red generally known as seaweeds). The first collections of algae were made in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and are among the earliest collections in the museum from Britain and abroad. Many collectors have contributed directly or indirectly to the development and growth of the seaweed collection and these are listed in an appendix to this paper. The taxonomic and geographical range of the collection is broad and a significant amount of information is associated with it. As access to this information is not always straightforward, a start has been made to improve this through specimen databases and image collections. A collection review has improved the availability of geographical information; lists of countries for a given species and lists of species for a given country will soon be available, while for Great Britain and Ireland geographical data from specimens have been collated to create species distribution maps. This paper considers issues affecting future development of the seaweed collection at the Natural History Museum, the importance and potential of the UK collection as a resource of national biodiversity information, and participation in a global network of collections. -

Welcome Note and Information from the Co-Conveners We hope you will enjoy the NEAS 2004 meeting at the scenic Avery Point Campus of the University of Connecticut in Groton, CT. The last time that we assembled at The University of Connecticut was during the formative years of NEAS (12th Northeast Algal Symposium in 1973). Both NEAS and The University have come along way. These meetings will offer oral and poster presentations by students and faculty on a wide variety of phycological topics, as well as student poster and paper awards. We extend a warm welcome to all of our student members. The Executive Committee of NEAS has extended dormitory lodging at Project Oceanology gratis to all student members of the Society. We believe this shows NEAS members’ pride in and our commitment to our student members. This year we will be honoring Professor Arthur C. Mathieson as the Honorary Chair of the 43rd Northeast Algal Symposium. Art arrived with his wife, Myla, at the University of New Hampshire in 1965 from California. Art is a Professor of Botany and a Faculty in Residence at the Jackson Estuarine Laboratory of the University of New Hampshire. He received his Bachelor of Science and Master’s Degrees at the University of California, Los Angeles. In 1965 he received his doctoral degree from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. Over a 43-year career Art has supervised many undergraduate and graduate students studying the ecology, systematics and mariculture of benthic marine algae. He has been an aquanaut-scientist for the Tektite II and also for the FLARE submersible programs. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract An ongoing phycological survey in the Laje de Santos Marine State Park (LSMSP) of São Paulo in southeastern Brazil revealed a previously undescribed species of Osmundea (Rhodophyta, Rhodomelaceae), which was found in the subtidal zone at a depth of 7 to 20 m. Morphological studies conducted on Osmundea specimens collected in the LSMSP revealed characteristics typical of the genus Osmundea, including two pericentral cells per each axial segment and tetrasporangia cut off randomly from cortical cells. -

ISABEL MENESES 2 ABSTRACT: Ceramium is widely distributed and recorded from the coasts of the North Pacific Ocean. Thus, it is not surprising to find new species and new records of this genus among the numerous islands spread in this oceanic region. Extensive examination ofmaterial collected around O'ahu and other Hawaiian Islands has yielded two new records: Ceramium aduncum Nakamura (pre viously known from Japan), Ceramium clarionensis Setchell & Gardner (pre viously recorded for the Pacific coast of Mexico), and a new species, Ceramium cingulum Meneses. ABBorr2 ABSTRACT: Peleophycus multiprocarpium is described as a genus and species new to the red algal family Gloiosiphoniaceae (Cryptonemiales), in which a given supporting cell may bear one or more carpogonial branches and one to several auxiliary cell branches. Though several gonimoblasts could thus be formed on the same supporting cell, this condition has not been observed. Nonetheless it suggests a possible phylogeneticpathway from less complicated to more complex relationships of reproductive branches. In its structure of reproductive organs, Peleophycus seems most closely related to Gloeophycus, described from Korea and northwestern Japan. Peleophycus is one of several new genera and species that occurred in an unexpected subtidal (ca. 10-12 m depth) spring marine flora in the subtropics off Hawaii.
