It will cover algal systematics, biogeography and taxonomy; will address algal physiological and ecological aspects, and will discuss algal responses to human dimension issues such as global change, nutrient cycling, biogeochemical products and toxicity with an emphasis on marine macroalgae. Course description The course employs active learning and sometimes group strategies to increase students’ engagement. Learning will be achieved through lectures, invited speakers and different learning strategies that will provide information on biological concepts as well as methods for the study and use of algae. Objectives 1- Provide students with a basic knowledge of the evolution, taxonomy and biogeography of major algal groups. This will be achieved by critically reading scientific literature and analyzing particular cases. 2- Provide students with a good understanding of the anatomical, morphological and physiological features of major algal groups. This will be achieved through active learning exercises and linking structure and function aspects of algae. 3- Prepare students to critically analyze the role of algae in ecological processes related with global change. This will be achieved by understanding algal responses to global change analyzing study cases.

(Delesseriaceae, Ceramiales) is a new monotypic genus based on Hypoglossum geminatum Okamura, a species originally described from Japan. Wynneophycus geminatus (Okamura) comb. nov.is characterized by a discoid holdfast, erect or decumbent monostromatic blades with percurrent midribs, production of new blades from the midrib axial cells and absence of microscopic veins. In addition, it has apical cell division, several orders of lateral cell rows and paired transverse periaxial cells and formation of second-order cell rows from lateral cells with all forming third-order cell rows, with the midrib becoming corticated and forming a subterete stipe below as the blade wings are lost. Distinctive features of the new genus include tetrasporangia initiated from and restricted to single rows of second-order cells arranged in a single layer, cover cells developing prior to the tetrasporangia and an absence of intercalary cell divisions. Phylogenetic analyses of rbcL and large-subunit rDNA sequence data support the separation of Wynneophycus from Hypoglossum. We herein report on W. geminatus gen. & comb. nov. and delineate the new tribe Wynneophycuseae within the subfamily Delesserioideae of the family Delesseriaceae. This is a discursive exploration of the way that the enthusiasm for seaweed reveals prevailing ideas about propriety, philanthropy and natural theology during the Victorian era, incorporating social history, gender issues and natural history in an interdisciplinary manner. Although unchaperoned wandering upon remote shorelines remained a questionable activity for women, ʻseaweedingʼ made for a direct aesthetic engagement with the specificity of place in a way that conforms to Barbara Gatesʼs notion of the ʻVictorian female sublimeʼ.
