Administrative Information Collection Acquisition The audiocassettes were transferred from the Manuscript Division, which holds the papers of Stuart Eizenstat, in January 2010. Biographical Note Lawyer, ambassador, adviser to the president of the United States, and public official. Scope and Content Note Nearly 700 microcassettes, minicassettes, and standard audiocassettes containing oral history and research interviews conducted by Stuart Eizenstat. Some interviews were used in Eizenstat's book Imperfect Justice, 2003, and others were intended for a book about the presidency of Jimmy Carter, under whom Eizenstat served as assistant for domestic affairs and policy, 1977-1981. Collection Arrangement The interviews are arranged alphabetically by surname of interviewee. Printed lists of interviewees are available in the Recorded Sound Reference Center. These sound recordings form part of the Stuart Eizenstat papers, which are held by the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress. A finding aid to the papers is available online; see the Stuart Eizenstat papers. The Speeches and Writings series in Eizenstat's papers describes files relating directly to the audiocassettes. The files, arranged by name of interviewee, include correspondence, transcripts, background information, notes, inventories, lists, and “meta indexes” of the interviews. He is a member of government commissions in both the Czech Republic and Slovakia that address the claims of Holocaust victims, and is a member of the National Historical Commission of Lithuania. He helped the Romanian Government establish a national commission chaired by Elie Wiesel to examine the history of the Holocaust in that country, and serves as one of its founding members.
