COLLEGE OFFICIATING, LLC The Redding / Shaw Weekly Quiz Week 14

This quiz is being provided on a weekly basis to promote robust crew discussions and further individual rules study. It is in no way intended to be official play interpretations, as those are contained within Part II of the 2019 NCAA Football Rules, and are updated by official CFO Play Interpretation Bulletins when released during the season. These quizzes will be released on Wednesday of each game week, with answers being provided on the following Monday.

Answer each question by giving THESE FOUR ITEMS of information for the next time the is to be put in play: Team in possession and distance (or Free Kick or ) Yard line of succeeding spot Game clock status (Ready/ / Running / FK Rules / No Clock / 10-Second Runoff)

For any fouls that are not offset, assume that the penalty is accepted unless it is declined by rule, including accepting a 10 second subtraction if it is available.

1. Second and 20 at the B-30. Two seconds after releasing a A12 is tackled by B78 at the B-36, drawing a flag from the referee for . Eligible A80 catches the ball at the B-10, heads toward the sideline, and at the B-4 he the ball which strikes the -line pylon.

Ruling: A, 1/G, B-2, Snap

2. Fourth and 10 at the A-40. B23 catches the at the B-17 and carries the ball to the B-21 where he fumbles. During the B92 holds A46 at the B-18. A37 recovers the ball at the B-20 and returns it across Team B’s goal line for a .

Ruling: A, Try, B-3, No clock

3. Second and 14 at the A-2. A13 is deep in his zone when he throws a forward pass intended for A26. A72 standing next to A26 moves in front of him and tries to catch the ball but muffs it high into the air. A26 catches the muffed pass and is tackled at the A-18. Both A72 and A26 are in Team A’s when they touch the ball.

Ruling: A, 2/15, A-1, Snap

4. Third and 12 at the A-45. QB A12 drops back into the pocket to pass. At the A-43 guard A67 is inside the box when he blocks defensive lineman B70 just above the ankles from the back. A12 completes the pass to A88 who is tackled inbounds at the B-40.

Ruling: A, 3/27, A-30, Ready

5. Team A is ahead 17-14 and Team B is out of timeouts late in the 4th quarter. With 3rd and 5 at the A- 45, A12 keeps for a 3 yard gain and is tackled inbounds. B45 goes down with an injury, and when the officials stop the game clock, it reads 0:45.

Ruling: A, 4/2, A-48, 10 Sec Runnoff

6. With 4th and goal at the B-5, A12 throws a pass to the back of the end zone intended for A88. A88 was forced out of the back of the end zone by B21, but A88 immediately gets both feet back inbounds and re-establishes himself in the field of play. A88 then leaps up for the pass gaining possession while airborne and then is hit hard by B21. A88 would have come down inbounds, but the hit by B21 forces him to land .

Ruling: B, 1/10, B-5, Snap

7. With 2nd and 10 at the B-30, QB A12’s pass is intercepted by B-21 at the B-4 yard line and his original momentum carries him into the end zone where he is downed. During B-21’s run, B45 shoved an opponent in the back above the waist while in the end zone.

Ruling: B, Free Kick, B-20, F K Rules

8. Late in the half, Team A gains 5 yards to bring up 2nd and 5 at the B-20. With the ball ready for play, Team A quickly lines up and the ball is legally snapped to A12, who throws the ball forward directly to the ground. Team A’s formation was not legal at the snap. When the ball becomes dead, two seconds show on the game clock.
