The Society of the Sons of the American Revolution was established on April 20, 1889 at Annapolis MD on the anniversary of the Battle of Lexington and Concord (April 19, 1775). Our National Society was organized on April 30, l889 --the 100th anniversary of the inauguration of George Washington as our nation's first President under the new constitution. The National Society was chartered by an Act of the Congress on June 6, l906 signed by President who was a member of the SAR. The charter authorizes the granting of charters to societies of the various states and territories and authorizes the state societies to charter chapters within their borders. The Society membership now boasts the membership of 16 U.S. Presidents, Kings, Congressmen, Generals, and other professionals from all ranks of life.

Secretary C. Louis Raborg, Jr. MARYLAND SOCIETY Sons of the American Revolution Secretary’s Report 2010-2011

The 2009-2010 term was very active this year. As Secretary I issued state member numbers 3914-3989. Certificates received included 69 new members, 5 transfers and 1 dual member. Ten supplemental certificates were also received and sent to the members. Applications sent to National this year included 54 new, 9 junior and 22 supplementals. At the request of the National Genealogist I also worked to help clear some of the pended applications and have those that have been pended for some time to be withdrawn. As of the close of this report Maryland currently has 37 new and 11 supplemental applications awaiting approval. For those interested in looking at the current list you may see it on our National website. First click on the membership tab, then click on the application status report, then app_status_report2010_o4-22.pdf. With the help of National Registrar Aaron Adams and past state secretary Christos Christou I was also able to update our online member list at our Archives in Baltimore. I wish to thank Christos Christou for all of the help and guidance he provided me this year and also Registrar Ken Zimmerman for all of his efforts in sending applications along that were approved. Thanks to him, Maryland only had two applications pended this year, and they were quickly resolved. I also look forward to working with our new assistant secretary, Gary Neal, a transfer and past recording secretary from the Kansas Society. The following is a list of all approved applications this year.

Faithfully submitted, C. Louis Raborg Jr. MDSSAR Secretary

State Registrar Report

2009-2010

The State Registrar receives new SAR Applications and Supplemental Applications for review and approval then forwarded for approval by State Secretary then the Board of Officers and Managers votes on each new SAR Applicants. The National Society Sons of the American Revolution is the final approval authority for all applications. Refer to the State Secretary Annual Report which list new members that have been approved by our Society and the supplemental applications that have been approved for existing members of our Society.

The Chapter Registrar and Chapter members can be a great assistance in helping with new members in preparing the application to insure the application is completed properly and includes the correct source documentation. A final application should be provided after State Genealogist or State Registrar or Chapter Registrar reviews the worksheet. Plus Chapter sponsors should assist the new applicant.

The current membership inquiry process needs to be revised to better respond and follow-up on prospective membership applicants. An active State Society Membership Chairman would be helpful to coordinate membership requests to the Chapter level.

Chapter participation in the inquiry process is necessary by contacting interested individuals and following-up on preparation of the new applications. Inviting them to a meeting or assisting them with their applications is a key tool for gaining new members.

James Arthur McCafferty (Jan. 1, 1926- Jan. 8, 2010) Past President MDSSAR 1992-1993

James “Jim” Arthur McCafferty, 84 years old, of Fort Washington, passed away Friday, January 8, 2010, at Greenbrier Manor Nursing Home in Fairlea, of natural causes. Jim McCafferty was born in Columbus, Ohio, January 1, 1926, and is the son of the late James Arthur McCafferty and Marjorie Gilchrist McCafferty and the late Mary McCafferty, stepmother. Having received degrees from Ohio State University and American University, Jim retired as a statistician and criminologist from the U.S. Federal Court system located in Washington, D.C.

He was a proud and very active member of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR #115512 and MD #2514) and an honored recipient of their Minuteman Award in 2007. Exemplifying the respect Jim had at National, an exception was made to the rules that a Minuteman Award can only be presented at the SAR Congress and the President General traveled to WV and presented the award to Jim at his nursing home since Jim was too ill to travel to receive it at the Annual Congress.

Jim served in many SAR Offices including MidAtlantic District VPG in 2007, National Trustee in 2001 and over 14 National committees and state committees. He was long-time chairman of the Washington- Rochambeau Revolutionary Route. He was a delegate to 12 Congresses and made numerous donations to the Center for Advancing America’s Heritage and the George Washington Foundation. He attended 6 SAR European Trips. Jim also started the Maryland State Yearbook and for many years supported its costs out of his own pocket.

In addition, Jim McCafferty concentrated his efforts as a genealogy researcher and author. He valued his Presbyterian faith and was active in his church. Jim was preceded in death by his wives, Jane Roush McCafferty, and a sister, Mary Wilson, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Surviving are sister Maxine Dawson of Vero Beach, Fla.; three children, Cindy Martin of Union, Stan McCafferty of Ft. Lauderdale, and Bridget Green and husband Nick Green of Wartrace, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, Jason Green, Emily Brooks and husband Conan, Meghan Green, Kaitlin Green, Jennifer Rigby and husband Paul, Lindsay Cline and husband Geoff, and Suzanne Martin; four great- grandchildren, Cole, Gianna, Tor, and Danika Rigby. His family remembers Jim for his ever-present happy demeanor, generosity, optimism, adventurous spirit, and sly sense of humor, usually found behind the lens of a camera. Jim was also an avid gardener, beekeeper, traveler, animal-lover, and Buckeye fan.

Respecting Mr. McCafferty’s wishes, he will be cremated and inurned at Arlington National Cemetery. Please direct condolences to Groves Funeral Home, PO Box 436, Union, WV 24983, 304-772-5335, [email protected]. The funeral/burial service for Jim will be Monday, April 5th. The Graveside Service will be at 10 am and a Celebration of Life will be held at the Women's Center on the grounds of Arlington at 11am. Those planning to attend will need to meet at the visitor's center to the left along the main drive into Arlington. After you cross Memorial Bridge and go around the circle continue straight ahead. There is usually a guard which will direct you to the assembly building and the parking lot. I would suggest you get there at least by 9:30 am. We will assemble inside and follow the Arlington representative in our cars to the columbarium. Color Guardsmen can certainly wear their uniforms and can probably have a part in the program at the Women's Center. The military will conduct the funeral and the placing of the cremains in the columbarium. Jim’s son in law Nick Green can be contacted at [email protected].

Surgeon Lee Crandall Park, MD

Maryland Society Sons of the American Revolution

Surgeon’s Report

April 24, 2010

As Surgeon General NSSAR, I am also Chairman of the NSSAR Medical Advisory Committee (MAC). This Committee is made up of 22 members, almost all of whom are physicians or other health care professionals. The other member from Maryland is our own Duane Tackitt. The primary responsibility of this Committee is to provide education on health matters to the membership.

Until now we have provided health information primarily to members who have attended national meetings, with the hope that attendees and MAC members will pass on the information at their state meetings. However, at the meeting of our Committee in Louisville on March 5, 2010 we discussed the idea of having a link in the NSSAR website titled “Mens Health.” I am delighted to say that the NSSAR webmaster, our own Ian Towler, has enthusiastically agreed to set up such a link. By establishing this link we will be able to provide health information and education directly to the full membership of approximately 28,500 men.

One of our first items for this link will be lists of websites about health literacy: websites for searching symptoms and specific conditions, websites for searching medications, and websites for learning about health literacy. Studies have shown that most website searchers have quite limited health literacy and that searching the web without guidance can simply add to their anxiety and confusion, particularly considering all the flawed and sometimes even deceptive information on the internet.

Annual Report of the National Trustee

April 24, 2010

Summary of Activities:

I attended the NSSAR Fall Leadership Conference/Trustees Meeting, September 24-26, 2009. Key activities of the meeting included:  Centerline Checkmarks on NSSAR Applications-Blue Ribbon panel reviewed the current guidelines and determined that no change of the current policy was necessary.  Notice was received that because of the dues increase approved at the Annual Congress, the NSSAR National Life Membership Plan will change. Those applying for Life Membership after November 1 will pay $900 for members 40 and younger, decreasing by $15.00 per year of each year of age over 40.  A Masonic Ceremony dedicating the NSSAR Building Cornerstone was conducted on Thursday before the meeting.  I was appointed to the President General’s “250th Anniversary of the American Revolution Committee.” This committee will also serve to provide input into the NSSAR activities for the 225th Anniversary of the United States Constitution 2012-2016.  I continue to be a member of the Medical Advisory Committee, chaired by our own Surgeon General and NSSAR Surgeon General Dr. Lee Park. We discussed activities for the year that include participation in wellness education program at the National Congress.  The new, revised NSSAR Web Site was launched at the meeting and MDSSAR member and webmaster Ian Towler received great praise for his efforts.  PG Butler encourages all to continue to support the CAAH Library fund and indicated that the new web site provides for on-line contributions to the CAAH fund.

I attended the NSSAR Fall Leadership Conference/Trustee Meeting, March 4-6, 2010. Key activities included:  The Trustees defeated the Proposed By-Law Amendment (Tennessee Amendment) that would mandate that most DAR applications approved after 1985 would be accepted by SAR as proof of lineage and/or an ancestor’s service. It would eliminate the uncertainty of “two degrees of relationship” and “center checkmarks,” and other issues that would allow SAR to re-establish our long tradition of respect for the genealogical standards and practices of the DAR. MDSSAR Yearbook 2010 39 by Christopher J. Raborg, Editor

Old St. Paul's Cemetery Memorial Our Annual St. Paul's event was held at the Cemetery on June 7th with over 25 people attending from various organizations. Our MDSSAR Color Guard was in attendance and gave a beautiful musket salute at the graves of 4 Patriots buried in the cemetery.

Old St. Paul's Cemetery cleanup Members of the Chapter joined with the DAR to help rid the stones of weeds on John Eager Howard and a few other Patriots' graves. Despite the poison ivy, the event was very success in clearing years of growth. In addition, the members of the SAR made a subsequent trip to the location to photograph and find other Patriots buried on site in order to plan for an appropriate memorial. A vote at a subsequent board meeting has authorized the creation of a committee to look into erecting a memorial to the 30+ Patriots buried there.

CJB-JEH DAR Chapter The JEH Chapter has joined forces with the Commodore Joshua Barney-John Eager Howard Chapter to fix gravestones of 10 Patriots buried in the Cemetery. The cost is estimated at $75 each so the chapter donated half the sum ($375) and will be joining with the chapter to fix the gravestones.

Plans for Druid Hill Park Grave marking The Chapter is working on the commemoration of two patriots this fall at the 150th anniversary celebration of Druid Hill Park where the Rogers-Buchanan Burial Ground is located. The DAR placed a plaque there in 1932 for the great granddaughter of Martha Custis. We will place markers for the patriots there in time for an honor guard ceremony in October.

Colonel Nicholas Rogers, who was Adjunct to General Baron De Kalb and General DuCoudray, is buried in a formerly family cemetery at Druid Hill Park that now belongs to the city. Colonel Rogers is listed in the SAR register but his burial place is mistaken listed as Old St. Paul's.

General Andrew Buchanan, born October 22, 1734, was lieutenant of Baltimore county, and presiding justice. He acted a conspicuous part during the Revolution, being a member of the Committees of Correspondence, 1774, and of Observation 1775, and one of the five brigadier generals of the state troops, 1776. He was married July 20, 1760, to Susan Lawson; and died March 12, 1786, and is buried at Druid Hill.

ANNUAL REPORT 2009 - 2010

COL. TENCH TILGHMAN CHAPTER, MDSSAR

April 26, 2010

During the past year the chapter held meetings on its customary schedule.

Our May meeting was held at the Heron Point retirement community in Chestertown on the 23rd of that month where Chapter President John Honeywell presided and six members present. Sec. Tewes will contact the Queen Anne’s Co. Historic Society to coordinate our chapter’s annual participation in the annual July 4th celebration at the Wm. Paca grave site. All other committees had no activity or report. Immediate Past President Dr. W. Jackson Stenger presented a biographic history of his ancestor and our chapter namesake titled, “The Life and Times of Colonel Tench Tilghman”.

The annual July 4 celebration held in conjunction with the Queen Anne’s County Historical Society and the General Perry Benson Chapter of the DAR at Wye Plantation celebrates the contributions to our state and country of William Paca, one of Maryland’s four signers of the Declaration of Independence. Following the flag presentation Compatriot Warren Tewes placed our chapter’s wreath on Paca’s grave. The playing of taps, an impressive interlude of reflection on the significant contributions of our Revolutionary War ancestors, followed. The tolling of the bell was completed by Compatriot Paul Long.

Our November meeting was held at the Heron Point retirement community in Chestertown on the 11th of that month. VP/interim President Bob Cleaver presided the meeting of ten compatriots and state VP Raborg and President Hoover in their annual visitation. The sudden passage of Chapter President Honeywell and long-time meeting facility coordinator Dr. Beaven were remembered in prayer. Meeting MDSSAR Yearbook 2010 48 by Christopher J. Raborg, Editor

jointly, an annual event with the General Perry Benson Chapter of the DAR, the theme of the day was a tribute to America’s veterans. Brigadier General James A. Adkins of the 28th Adjutant General of Maryland, responsible for the daily operations of the Maryland Army National Guard, Maryland Air National Guard, Maryland Emergency Management Agency and Maryland Defense Force presented Maryland troop activities during the revolution, within Maryland and other states, as they are preserved in art. The Chapter’s American Flag Award was presented to Gen. Perry Benson Regent Linnie Marshall. A slate of 2010-2011 chapter officers was presented for election at the March 2010 meeting.

The March 2010 scheduled at Heron Point became conflicted from several member perspectives necessitating re- scheduling to April 24, 2010. This meeting will be included in the 2010-2011 annual chapter report.

Respectfully submitted,

Conway Gregory, Secretary

April 1, 2010

1021 E. High St.

Oakland, Maryland, 21550

We have two excellent secondary schools in Garratt County and our Little Meadows Chapter works fervently to encourage our students. The chapter recognizes the citizenship recipients at each school’s awards ceremony. These students are chosen by the faculty at each school. We present them certificates at the school’s awards ceremony. We host them to our regular dinner meeting inn June and recognize their achievement and award them and pin. We also encourage the JROTC by recognizing an outstanding student from each school with an award and dinner at out June meeting.

In September we select an outstanding individual who displays the nation’s flag in an impressive and respectful manner. We recognize these folks, whether private or corporate, with a certificate and banquet at our fall meeting in September. At the same time, our law enforcement committee selects an outstanding officer in Garrett County for recognition and an award. We alternate between the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office and the Maryland State Police. The officers seem very pleased to be recognized. This has been a very positive function of our efforts.

Our Christmas dinner is a celebration is a celebration of the season. At this time we simply celebrate the season. However we do select a book of historical or patriotic content to present to the local Ruth Enlow Library. This year we gave them Newt Gingrich’s Rediscovering God in America.

Some of our members are out of the area during a portion of the year. It is difficult to keep things going on a regular basis, but we are still hear and carrying on with what we thing is American tradition. Unfortunately, mush of the country has no idea what that means.

Respectfully, Luther D. Parrack, Jr. President, Little Meadows

MARYLAND SOCIETY Sons of the American Revolution Americanism Elementary School Poster Contest Report 2009

This year was Maryland's second year participating in the Americanism Elementary School Poster Contest. All entries again came from Harford County. This year’s state winner was Miranda Salters, age 10, a 5th grade student from Forest Hill Elementary School. The Col. Aquila Hall Chapter awarded her 1st place prize for $50.00 and she was presented a $150.00 check and certificate from the state for first place. The poster was then taken by the chairman to Atlanta for entry in the National Contest. The chapter also awarded a $25.00 2nd place prize to Gurneet Sandhu of William Paca Elementary School and all other entries received a $5 Gift Card to Dairy Queen. Now is the time of year to speak to principals and teachers about the program as many school districts study the American Revolution in the spring. The state deadline for chapter entries is Saturday May 15th 2010, The chapter deadline is Saturday May 1st, 2010 . In speaking with teachers last year I was told some do not teach The American Revolution until mid-late April, so moving the deadline date too far back may not work out well. As the state chairman I solicit the contest to any interested children throughout Maryland. I would ask all chapter presidents to consider appointing a chapter chairman for the contest. Please send their names and contact information to me at [email protected] so that when further requests come in I can give those contacts to the interested parties. For any additional information please feel free to contact me anytime. Thank you.

CAAH Fundraising Ernest L. Irish

Maryland Society Sons of the American Revolution CAAH Fundraising Committee

Center for Advancing America’s Heritage Annual Report As of 31 March 2010

A letter was prepared for inclusion with the annual dues statements requesting donations directly to NSSAR for the Center for Advancing America’s Heritage or to accompany the dues payment. 75 members included CAAH donations along with their dues payment totaling $2,062.00.

In addition, there were 33 donations from Maryland members and friends during this past year that were sent directly to the National Headquarters totaling $17,700.00.

On the 7th of March 2009, the Trustees approved a proposal to renovate the smaller portion of the new CAAH building, using monies currently on hand, and to move the library and the membership application processing function from the existing HQ building into the new building. Construction is well underway and this portion of the new building is scheduled to be dedicated on 20 June 2010.

We still need to raise additional monies to renovate the remaining portion of the building and move the rest of the HQ, including the CAAH functions, into the new building.

25% of MDSSAR members have contributed but the average amount of these donations is far below the $250 average amount per member needed to accomplish our goal. 12 of our members have contributed $500.00 or more and are authorized to wear the antique copper medal and the campaign lapel pin; better yet, 15 of our members have contributed $1,000.00 or more and are authorized to wear the antique copper and sapphire medal and the associated campaign lapel pin. We are in need of many more contributions at these levels.

Members are encouraged to donate to the best of their ability at any time to help us meet our goal in one of two ways: 1. Directly to the SAR Foundation, NSSAR, 1000 South Fourth Street, Louisville KY 40203. Annotate your checks to be for CAAH and indicate that you are a member of the MDSSAR, or 2. Contribute on-line by calling up www.sarfoundation.org/donate.htm, scroll down the page to select the amount you wish to donate and fill in the form with your credit card data.

Any member wishing to make multi-year pledges, gifts of securities, or a gift through your estate, please contact Michelle Dayvault, SAR Foundation Administrative Assistant, at (502) 589-1776 or by e-mail at [email protected] or [email protected].

CAR-DAR-SAR Liaison Report

May 12, 2010

To the Board of the MDSSAR,

This past year has been an active year for all three societies including multiple joint events that have celebrated the connection of our three organizations. The highlights this year have included several large events where members of all societies have gathered for fellowship and fun.

o The C.A.R. Christmas Party in Chestertown Maryland where Santa Claus visited the group and handed out candy canes to attendees. o The C.A.R.-DAR-SAR History Triad in January each year where members of all three societies join together for an afternoon of fun. o The DAR Picnic in the Country where members travelled to Western Maryland to enjoy the hospitality of the Boonsboro community for food and fun. o The DAR State Meeting where CARs were represented well with a luncheon that thanked the DAR for their support of the society. o The SAR Patriots’ Ball where debutantes from numerous C.A.R. Societies in MD and around the country were presented.

It has been my honor to serve as the Society Chairman. We look forward to more SAR members joining the C.A.R. group activities including financial and moral support as well as service as officers in the society.

The MDSSAR Color Guard is very fortunate to have a fifer and drummer. The sound of a fife and drum adds to the pageantry of our ceremonies. Over the past 16 months members of the MDSSAR Color Guard have represented the State Society at national, state and chapter functions and ceremonies. Other organizations have requested the Color Guard to present colors in their opening ceremonies; this has been a very positive activity for us, giving us the opportunity to let the public know that there is a Maryland SAR.

Some of the events of the past 16 months are as follows.

MDSSAR Yearbook 2010 63 by Christopher J. Raborg, Editor

January 2009 January was a quiet month for us; it gave us a time to polish buckles and clean our muskets.

February 2009 February started with the Col. Aquila Hall Chapter gun raffle ticket sales and SAR promotion at the Timonium Fairgrounds Gun Show. With several members of the Color Guard also members of the Col. Aquila Hall Chapter, it was natural that wearing the uniform was a must.

The George Washington Luncheon had the Color Guard present the colors. This is one of the State functions that the color guard does every year.

March 2009

The Color Guard was very fortunate in that three of us were able to go to Fort Benning GA and participate in the unveiling of the SAR statue to the “First Soldier.” One interesting fact about the statue is that the soldier depicted on the front is that of a Maryland Continental Line Soldier.

The Maryland DAR has been a faithful requester for the Color Guards services over the years. The Color Guard opened their 104th Conference in 2009.

March also had members of the Color Guard at the Col. Aquila Hall Chapter, SAR promotion at Harford Mall's Community Day. This was the first time for many in the community to hear about the SAR and its many programs and projects.

The Color Guard assisted with the Hereditary Order of the Signers of the Bush Declaration (HOSBD) member marking of the grave of Frank A. Smithson on March 22nd, 2009.

April 2009 April saw the Color Guard on a rainy Easter Saturday

at two grave markings. The first was for a DAR marking of Patriot David Weems’ grave at Traceys Landing, MD.

The second marking was for Private Benjamin C. Wood’s grave. State President Duane Tackitt chose Private Wood to be honored at the Congressional Cemetery in Washington DC.

April 18th saw the Color Guard presenting the Colors at the Annual Meeting.

May 2009

In May the Col. Aquila Hall Chapter and SAR promotion at the Wildlife Art Festival in Havre de Grace Maryland attracted many visitors with Color Guardsmen in uniform. A grave marking ceremony for Patriot Christopher Raborg Sr. was held at Louden Park Cemetery in Baltimore, MD. Other members of this family were honored including War of 1812 veteran and Civil War veterans; MDSSAR Color Guard was there.

The Color Guard and members of the Westminster Chapter presented the Colors at Revolutionary War Patriot Sgt. James Crawford’s grave marking at St. Luke's (Winters) Cemetery, New Windsor, MD.

The Memorial Day Parade in Washington D.C. is considered a National SAR event and MDSSAR was there with our fife and drummer providing marching music.

June 2009

John Eager Howard Chapter’s Annual Old St. Paul’s Cemetery Ceremony was well attended. The Color Guard performed a Sunday morning musket salute.

The Christian Ardinger Chapter had its first grave marking. It was for their name sake, Patriot Private Christian Ardinger at the Riverview Cemetery Ceremony, Williamsport, MD. It was a very hot Sunday afternoon, but many family members attended. The Color Guard performed a musket salute.

At the Frederick Chapter grave dedication of Captain Peter Mantz in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Frederick, MD, the Color Guard with muskets escorted DAR ladies carrying the Colors. MDSSAR Yearbook 2010 67 by Christopher J. Raborg, Editor

July 2009 The 119th Annual National Congress held in Atlanta, GA had MDSSAR Color Guard members participate in the events.

August 2009 The Empire State Society (New York) hosted the Atlantic Middle States Conference in 2009 in Rochester, NY, several Color Guardsmen participated in presenting the Colors.

September 2009 September 19, The DAR Pack Horse Ford Chapter of Shepherdstown, WV held John Montgomery's grave marking and dedication at the restored historic Zion (Episcopal) Church Cemetery in Urbana, MD. Both young and old watched the Color Guard perform a musket salute.

The fall leadership meeting in Louisville, KY saw MDSSAR Color Guardsmen in uniform.

October 2009 The busy month of October started with a weekend at the living history site, Jerusalem Mill. Color Guardsmen from the Col. Aquila Hall Chapter manned displays and talked with the many visitors and revolutionary war re- enactors.

Colors were presented by the Color Guard at the semi-annual meeting held at the Country Club of Maryland.

On Thursday the 22nd the Color Guard was again honored to be part of the ceremony at the French Monument on St. John College in Annapolis MD. The Color Guard performed a musket salute.

Catoctin Furnace historic marker presentation and dedication completed the busy schedule for the Color Guard.

November 2009

November 12th saw MDSSAR members and Color Guardsmen meet with Governor O’Malley in his office to present him with his certificate of membership in the SAR.

November 13th the Color Guard presented Color at the Dedication of the APhA Headquarters in Washington D.C. December 2009

December 2009

Patriots’ Ball Christos Christou, Jr.

48th Annual Patriots Ball Crowne Plaza – Timonium MD Saturday January 2, 2010

This year's Ball was a huge success despite the original date of Dec. 19th falling on the Snow Blizzard of 2009. We were able to move the date quickly to Jan. 2, 2010 and 99% of the attendees were able to reschedule and attend. We will have to refer to this as the 2009 Ball held in Jan. 2010 to distinguish it from the 2010 Ball which we hope will be held in Dec 2010. We had numerous dignitaries from our National Society attend and Heads of many other organizations including DAR, and CAR.

Committee Members It is impossible to manage such a large event without the help of many people. Many thanks to all those who participate and made this move smoothly including the staff at Crowne Plaza who met our every need immediately.

Edward A. Foreman, Jr. Senior Advisor David W. Hoover State President, Ex Officio Ms. Jenna Irene Sieverts C.A.R. Liaison and Debutante Advisor Mrs. MaryAnn Ensminger Debutante Coordinators Mrs. Maureen Tipton Debutante Coordinators Mrs. Barbara H. Carpenter Protocol Barrett L. McKown Treasurer

Many thanks to the Color Guard and Past Presidents who assisted with escorting ladies and the presentation during the Ball. Also special thanks to Dan Tipton for setting up and transporting all the decorations even though Maureen was too ill to attend the function.

Debutantes/Escorts We had 8 debutantes presented: Miss Martina Elizabeth Caputy escorted by Austin Charles Knapp, Miss Taylor St. Clair Dukehart escorted by Mr. Charles O. Fisher Jr., Miss Susanna Hershey Herrick escorted by Peter Andrew Herrick, Miss Jennifer Chelsea Lash escorted by Mr. Gregory Stokes, Miss Kathryn Louise Jarvis escorted by Daniel Charles Jarvis, Miss Marybeth Butler escorted by William Glen Secor, Miss Mary Elisabeth Schmidt escorted by Mr. Kevin Matthew McPartland, Miss Bailey Marie McWilliams escorted by Prescott Allen McWilliams.

We had 122 attendees with receipts of $5,910 for dinners and $2,140 in donations. The Members of the Color Guard were provided free meals. All donors were listed in the Program and those who paid for the Dec. 19th event but could not make the Jan. 2nd reschedule had their payments made into donations and were also listed in the program as a thanks.

Our next Patriots’ Ball is already scheduled for December 18th, 2010 at the Crowne Plaza.

Wreaths Across America C. Louis Raborg, Jr.

MARYLAND SOCIETY Sons of the American Revolution Wreaths Across America Report 2009

The Wreaths Across America program honors our fallen service men and women. A wreath is placed for each service branch, Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Cost Guard, Merchant Marines and one for those Missing In Action. The Maryland Society participated for the second time in the program sending members to Annapolis, Cheltenham and Bel Air Veterans Cemeteries. Photos and information on the event are located on the Maryland website, thanks to the webmaster Ian Towler. Treasurer Barry McKown and Color Guardsman Bob Urban attended the program in Annapolis where hundreds of local citizens, veterans, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Civil Air Patrol units, and military groups were in attendance. There was over 800 wreaths placed at row after row of tombstones for the veterans interred at this cemetery beginning with the Civil War and up to today. George Satterthwaite and Doug Stuart were in charge of the Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery ceremony. The Thomas Stone Color Guard along with draftee Neal Johnson participated in the ceremony. The Aquila Hall Chapter members of the MDSSAR Color Guard, Commander Bill Smithson, Bobby Ayres, Chris Smithson and myself assisted the Bel Air American Legion Post 39 in the ceremonies in Bel Air. After the seven wreaths were placed at the Veterans Memorial next to the town hall, the color guard performed the musket salute. The color guard also performed a musket salute after a single Army wreath was place at the statue in tribute of all flyers and in memory of Captain H. Merle Bailey, bomber pilot, in Bel Air Memorial Gardens. Thanks to the efforts of George Satterthwaithe and Doug Stewart the program will be led again by the John Hanson Chapter in 2010. I ask all members to support their efforts in coming year.
