Collins 2005-2006 The Maryland Society of the Sons of the American Revolution was established on April 20, 1889 at Annapolis MD on the anniversary of resignation of Washington military commission on April 19, 1783 in Annapolis. Our National Society was organized on April 30, l889 -- the 100th anniversary of the inauguration of George Washington as our nation's first President under the new constitution. The National Society was chartered by an Act of the United States Congress on June 6, l906 signed by President Theodore Roosevelt who was a member of the SAR. The charter authorizes the granting of charters to societies of the various states and territories and authorizes the state societies to charter chapters within their borders. The Society membership now boasts the membership of 14 U.S. Presidents, Kings, Congressmen, and other professionals from all ranks of life. Duane Tackitt Maryland State Society Sons of the American Revolution Annual Meeting April 30, 2005 at the Comfort Inn in Bowie, Maryland Meeting opened at 9:00am by President Douglas B. Stuart. Invocation led by Rev. Partee Boliek. Pledge led by Lester Foster and SAR pledge led by Cecil Massie. Officers Reports: President: Douglas B. Stuart opened the meeting by introducing VPG Darryl Jeffries of Reading, PA. Ernie Irish introduced new President of the Stone Chapter Michael Mazzeo and Christopher Beck was introduced as the new president of the John Paul Jones Chapter. Carroll Collins introduced Gary Bond former President of the DCSSAR. President Stuart presented a written report on his visits to several chapters and events this year. 1st Vice President: Carroll Collins presented a verbal report of his activities including his transfer of the DCSSAR Presidency to others and his full focus now on the MDSSAR. He also indicated that the next board meeting will be May 21st and likely to be in Frederick at Brewer's alley but he would confirm the location. 2nd Vice President: Rev. Christos Christou, Jr. presented a written report of his activities including his new membership application activities, his chapter duties, secretary duties, and other activities including the Yearbook. 3rd Vice President: William White was absent but written report submitted to secretary and included

Collins October 2005 Issue Semi-Annual Meeting We had quite a large gathering at the Semi- Annual Meeting in Annapolis at the Officer’s Club of the United States Naval Academy on Oct. 15th. Just following the State Board Meeting, at 12pm guests enjoyed a fine lunch and then talk from fellow MDSSAR Member, John H. Beakes Jr. who is working on a biography of famous Patriot Col. John Eager Howard. John H. Beakes Jr., Guest Speaker Mr. Beakes provided a fascinating talk on the life of Col. John Eager Howard who was a former Officer in the MD Line, Hero at Cowpens and Governor of MD just to name a few of his long credits. John Beakes is a 1966 graduate of the USNA and a former nuclear submarine officer, having served on the USS Nautilus and the USS George Bancroft.
