Tennessee Society Sons of the American Revolution Applications 1899-1980 State of Tennessee Department of State Tennessee State Library and Archives 403 Seventh Avenue North Nashville, Tennessee 37243-0312 TENNESSEE SOCIETY SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION APPLICATIONS 1899-1980 (THS COLLECTION) Processed by: Gregory G. Poole Archival Technical Services Date Completed: June 14, 2004 Accession Number: THS 879 Location: THS III-L-2-5 Microfilm Accession Number: 1738 MICROFILMED INTRODUCTION This finding aid focuses on the applications for membership into the Tennessee Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, a fraternal and patriotic organization. The applications span the period from the beginning of the state society in 1899 through 1980. The collection is composed of approximately 10 cubic feet of material, and is arranged in alphabetical order according to the applicant. The collection was presented to the Tennessee Historical Society by the Tennessee Society, Sons of the American Revolution, Nashville, Tennessee in 1998. There are no restrictions on the material. Single photocopies of unpublished materials in the collection may be made for individual or scholarly research. The origins of the Sons of the American Revolution began in 1876. As part of the Centennial celebrations, a group of men from San Francisco, California, who were descendents of patriots involved in the American Revolution, formed an organization called the “Sons of Revolutionary Sires.” Their objective was to have a fraternal and civic society to honor those men and women who served in the cause of American independence. Out of the Sires grew the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution which was organized on January 17, 1890. The Sons of the American Revolution was conceived as a fraternal and civic society composed of lineal descendents of the men who wintered at Valley Forge, signed the Declaration of Independence, fought in the battles of the American Revolution, served in the Continental Congress or otherwise supported the cause of American independence. The National Society was chartered by an act of the United States Congress on June 6, 1906. The charter authorized the granting of charters to societies of the various states and territories and authorized the state societies to charter chapters within their borders. The Tennessee State Society of the Sons of the American Revolution was organized on December 3, 1899 and is one of the several state societies which predated the incorporation of the National Society. Within the Tennessee Society there are currently fourteen chapters located throughout the state. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The Tennessee Society, Sons of the American Revolution Applications, containing approximately 10 cubic feet of material, span the period 1899 through 1980. The collection is composed exclusively of the applications of prospective members of the Tennessee State Society beginning with the first member in 1899. The applications are arranged in alphabetical order by the name of the applicant. Following the name of the applicant is listed the Revolutionary ancestor and the national and state application number. Each application contains the lineage and references to the applicant’s Revolutionary War line of descent. Some of the applications are more detailed than others, but as a general rule, the older the application the fewer details provided. One interesting part of the collection is the actual grandsons and in a few cases the children of Revolutionary War soldiers who applied for membership. In some instances, supporting correspondence and obituaries for the applicants may be found. The Tennessee Society, Sons of the American Revolution Applications provide an important genealogical resource for the researcher seeking information on a Revolutionary War ancestor. For the prospective member, the applications, when used carefully, will provide an important resource in obtaining membership into the society. PREFACE, present volume has grown THE out of the request of a relative, four years ago, to fill up some blanks in a Family Bible. How the response to that request grew from a letter into a pamphlet, and from a pamphlet into a volume ; by what unthought-of study, correspondence, and visits to the old homes of the family, a labour of love has reached its present stopping-place, I need not detail to any who have had anything to do with genealogical research. Some special acknowledgment, besides that given on each page, is due for co-operation in this work, without which I could have done comparatively noth- ing. Mr. Charles B. The commissions measure seven and ½ cubic feet and are recorded in 56 volumes. These records were maintained by the Secretary of State and were found to be in fair to good condition. The volumes have been arranged chronologically and have been microfilmed. The original documents have been retained.
