Provide important ecosystem services

• key primary producers (~50% of O2 producon) • planktonic microalgae play key roles in global geochemical cycles • macroalgae are the dominant species in coastal regions, where they support a broad range of marine organisms • algae are an economic resource that is increasingly being exploited and domescated economic importance
