http://holyrosarynj.org/ENGLISH/history.html HOLY ROSARY CHURCH HISTORY, PASSAIC, NJ Although the census for 1890 showed only 3,615 Poles in New Jersey. Bishop Wigger in his report for the same year listed 5,000 Poles in the Newark Diocese alone. By 1910, the census listed 69,244 Poles in New Jersey, most of them coming from the small villages in Galicia, the Southern part of Poland. These immigrants were attracted to the mills in Passaic and Paterson, and particularly in Passaic, where German companies had established woolen and worsted mills. Poles and other nationalities were brought directly by the mill owners from Ellis Island to Passaic. Other Polish immigrants were experienced miners and they were attracted to the iron mines in Hibernia and the zinc mines in Franklin and Ogdensburg. For the most part, the Poles were overwhelmingly Catholic and devout in the practice of their religion. The earliest Polish Catholics in Passaic were forced to travel to St. Stanislaus Church, established in 1872 on East Seventh Street in Manhattan, N.Y, and later to St. Anthony's Church, established in 1884 in Jersey City. Kruczek The idea of establishing the second church in eastern Passaic (the parish of St. Joseph has existed since 1892) was formed in 1908, because the Polish population had grown to the point that St. Joseph’s church could not contain all the faithful. In 1913, a parish by the name of Mary, Queen of Poland was formed, but without the official permission to establish a formal church. -

The Feast of St Gerasimus of the Jordan (2014)
THE FEAST OF ST GERASIMUS OF THE JORDAN (2014) On Monday, the 4th/17th of March 2014, the memory of St Gerasimus of the Jordan was celebrated by the Patriarchate at the Monastery founded by him in the desert of the West Bank of the river Jordan. The monastery was founded by Hosios Gerasimus in 451 AD, after he arrived to the Holy Land from his birthplace of Lycia in Asia Minor, and after having dwelt in Monasteries and hermitages of Palestine with Hosios Euthymius the Great and Hosios Kyriakos the Recluse. In this Monastery he brought together a crowd of monks and other recluses who approached him in quest of spiritual guidance. St Gerasimus was a proponent of the dogma of the Fourth Ecumenical Council in Chalcedon, which established the teaching of one hypostasis in two natures for our Lord Jesus Christ, and condemned the notion of one nature embraced to this day by the Churches of the Copts, Armenians, Syrians and Ethiopians. This particular Monastery, which has sustained a series of raids, hosts several inhabitants of Jericho, as well as pilgrims, in facilities founded by the Hegoumen, Archimandrite Chrysostomos. Here, on the morning of the aforementioned day, His Beatitude Theophilos arrived in the company of the Most Reverend Metropolitans Isychios of Kapitolias, and Kyriakos of Nazareth; the Elder Secretary-General, Archbishop Aristarchos of Constantina; the Secretary of the Holy and Sacred Synod, Archbishop Demetrius of Lydda; Archimandrite Ieronymus and other Hagiotaphite Hieromonks; the Archdeacon, f. Evlogios, and Hierodeacon f. Dionysius. Following a warm welcome, His Beatitude led the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts with co-officiating priests and deacons, in the presence of a great crowd of pilgrims, hailing mostly of Cyprus, the Greek Consul-General to Jerusalem, Mr Georgios Zacharoudiakis and his esteemed wife. -

St. Gerasimus of the Jordan Catholic.net Gerasimus of the Jordan (Greek: Γεράσιμοςἐν Ιορδάν, Abba Gerasimus, Holy Righteous Father Gerasimus of Jordan—also spelled Gerasimos or Gerasim) -a Christian saint, monk and abbot of the 5th century AD. Born in the province of Lycia, the southern part of Asia Minor into a wealthy family. Gerasimus left his family wealth and worldly affairs to become a monk. He departed for the region Thebaid in the Egyptian desert, later again returning to his native Lycia. About the middle of 5th century Saint Gerasimus went to Palestine and settled in wilderness near the Jordan River. There he established a monastery and became known for his righteous life of asceticism and prayer. The story of Gerasimus and the lion, when the saint tamed the animal by removing a thorn from its paw and taught it obedience, became widely known in the Christian world. He is reputed to have attended to the Fourth Ecumenical Council at Chalcedon in 451. Saint Gerasimus of the Jordan died in 475 (or, by other accounts 451). His feast day is celebrated on March 4 by the Eastern Orthodox Church and on March 5 by the Roman Catholic Church. Monastery of St. Gerasimus The Greek Orthodox monastery of Deir Hajla near Jericho commemorates St. Gerasimus, whose lavra was nearby. The history of the monastery is also linked to another Christian narrative. The Holy Family were said to have found refuge in a cave here during their flight from Herod the Great. An underground chapel was built on the spot where the Holy Family is believed to have spent the night. -

“FOUR HOMES OF MERCY” IN BETHANY, OF THE LATE H. SIKSEL On Thursday the 7th/20th of March 2014, Ms Randa Siksek and Ms Nadia George Karaa visited His Beatitude Theophilos, Patriarch of Jerusalem, in order to extend their thanks over the fact that He led the funeral service for the late Henrietta Siksek, who passed away on Saturday the 2nd/15th of March 2014, at the age of 96. The late Henrietta Siksek was the founder of a very significant charitable project known as “Four Homes of Mercy” in Bethany. The foundation, of the Siksek family, provided shelter to thousands of elder people and children abandoned by their families, people suffering from incurable mental and other diseases. Today, the “Four Homes of Mercy” hosts approximately seventy residents. During His meeting with Ms Randa Siksek, a relative of the late Henrietta Siksek, and Ms Nadia George Karaa, current Director of the “Homes”, His Beatitude praised the selfless and extensive charitable work of the late H. Siksek. In order to contribute to the continuation of this work, His Beatitude offered the amount of €10.000 to be deposited into a special bank account, its savings intended for the education of children residing at the foundation. Archbishop Aristarchos of Constantina contributed 10.000 USD$ for the same purpose. Extending her thanks, Ms Randa Simon Siksek offered His Beatitude a text from the Old and New Testaments published in three volumes by the Church of Russia in 1821. The volumes belonged to the late George Siksek, who translated the Great Horologion from Greek into Arabic. -

ISSN 0001 - 6829 Artur Patek REMARKS ON THE SITUATION OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN THE USSR IN THE INTERWAR PERIOD In recent years there has appeared more interest in the history’ of the Catholic Church in the territory of the former Soviet Union, which mast be viewed as a positive phenomenon, since because of the political conditions this was one of the more neglected issues1. Therefore I consider it useful to present the following remarks based on less frequently used archival materials. In the territory of the USSR nine units of Church administration were distinguished since 1923: the Mokhilov archdiocese, the Vladivostok (far- eastern) diocese, the Tyraspol diocese (the South Ukraine and the Volga river district), Zhitomir, Kamenets-Podohlyan, Minsk dioceses, the vicariat apostolic of Crimea and Caucasus, the vicariat apostolic of Siberia and the apostolic administration for the Catholics of Armenian denomination. The majority of them came into being only after 1917. The Minsk and Kamenets dioceses, cancelled as the result of repressions following the Polish January uprising in 1863 were reactivated respectively in 1917 and 1918 and for the move effective administration Siberian vicariat and Vladivostok diocese were isolated from the great Mokhilov archdiocese2. The spectacular gesture of Pope Pius XI, who in 1926 through his special legate bishop Michel d ’Herbigny called into being a secret Catholic hierarchy in the USSR and established eleven apostolic administrations, was of no practical conse- 1 More extensively see R.
