  • Efficiency Assessment of Secondary Schools in Mauritius: a DEA Approach
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL & SCIENCE EDUCATION e-ISSN: 1306-3065 0 OPEN ACCESS 2018, Vol. 13, No. 1 , 865-880 Efficiency Assessment of Secondary Schools in Mauritius: A DEA Approach Salim Nauzeer 1*, Vishal Chandr Jaunky 2, Vani Ramesh 3 1 Open University of Mauritius, Moka, MAURITIUS 2 ETS/Economics, Luleå University of Technology, Luleå SE-971 87, SWEDEN 3 REVA University Bangalore, INDIA * CORRESPONDENCE: [email protected] ABSTRACT In the context of the quantitative approach to the evaluation of educational units there is an emerging interest in discerning the factors that affect the performance of a school. The data envelopment analysis (DEA) methodology provides an effective agenda for evaluating the efficiency of educational units, such as the secondary schools, in the presence of multiple inputs and outputs. In this paper we evaluate the performance of Mauritian colleges through DEA. The data deal with overall % passes at school certificate and higher school certificate in all secondary colleges for the year 2016. The 141 colleges are bunched on the foundation of factors such as school facilities and school population. The analysis results indicate that efficiency of colleges ranged between 0 and 1 with an average of 0.872(CRS) and 0.909(VRS) using Tobit model. The second stage analysis found that the location, zone, types of colleges, teacher-student ratio, student-class ratio, college status and canteen have significant effect on school’s performance. Keywords: data envelopment analysis, colleges, efficiency INTRODUCTION This study aims to fill the gap by investigating the causal nexus between the inputs and performances in the different types of secondary schools and tries to further establish an efficiency score using the DEA approach.

University WOMEN AND POLITICS IN A PLURAL SOCIETY: THE CASE OF MAURITIUS Town Ramola RAMTOHULCape of Dissertation submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the UniversityAfrican Gender Institute University of Cape Town February 2009 Women and Politics in a Plural Society: The Case of Mauritius ABSTRACT This research is a socio-historical study of women and politics in the Indian Ocean Island of Mauritius. It traces the historical evolution of women‟s political engagement in social and women‟s movements as well as in the formal political institutions. The backdrop to this study was my interest in the field of women and politics and concern on women‟s marginal presence in the Mauritian parliament since women obtained the right to vote and stand for election in 1947, and until recently, the stark silences on this issue in the country. Mauritius experienced sustained democracy following independence and gained a solid reputation in terms of its stable democratic regime and economic success. Despite these achievements, the Mauritian democracy is deficient with regard to women‟s representation at the highest level of decision-making, in parliament. Moreover, the absence of documentation on this topic has rendered the scope of thisTown study broad. In this thesis I primarily draw on the postcolonial feminist writings to study women‟s political activism in social and women‟s movements.

  • Conceptual Framework and Methodology
Translation and National Identity: The Use and Reception of Mauritian Creole Translations of Shakespeare and Molière Kate November PhD University of Edinburgh 2009 Declaration I, Kate November, declare that this thesis is my own work and that it has not been submitted for any other degree or professional qualification. Signature: Date: To Jesus, my Lord and Saviour Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to find out whether theatre translation into Mauritian Creole can contribute to the formation of a national identity in post-colonial, multi-ethnic and multilingual Mauritius. There are currently fourteen languages spoken, many of which, as carriers of symbolic value, are often used as markers of ethnic identity. Moreover, the fact that they do not all carry the same socio-economic and political status has created a linguistic hierarchy which positions English at the top, closely followed by French, in turn followed by Asian languages and finally by Mauritian Creole, even though the latter is the most widely spoken language on the island. I argue that translation into Mauritian Creole is largely an ideological endeavour, designed to challenge the existing asymmetrical linguistic power relations, and to highlight the language’s existence as a shared cultural capital and as a potential force for national unity. I show how such an endeavour is closely linked to the political and socio-cultural aspects of the target society. This is done by using complementary theoretical perspectives, such as Itamar Even-Zohar’s polysystem theory (1979, 2000), André Lefevere’s systemic concept (2004) and post-colonial approaches to translation, and by drawing upon the case study research method, with its emphasis on multiple sources for data collection.
