Crete was once the center of the Minoan civilization (c. 2700–1420 BC), regarded as the earliest recorded civilization in Europe. In addition to birding, we will explore several famous archeological sites, including Knossos and ancient Phaistos, the most important centers of Minoan times. Crete’s landscape is very special: defined by high mountain ranges, deep valleys, fertile plateaus, and caves (including the mythological birthplace of the ancient Greek god, Zeus) Rivers have cut deep, exceptionally beautiful gorges that create a rich presence of geological wealth and have been explored for their aromatic and medicinal plants since Minoan times. Populations of choughs, Griffon Vultures, Lammergeiers, and swifts nest on the steep cliffs. A fantastic variety of birds and plants are found on Crete: not only its resident bird species, which are numerous and include rare and endangered birds, but also the migrants who stop over on Crete during their journeys to and from Africa and Europe. The isolation of Crete from mainland Europe, Asia, and Africa is reflected in the diversity of habitats, flora, and avifauna. The richness of the surroundings results in an impressive bird species list and often unexpected surprises. For example, last year a Blue- cheeked Bee-eater, usually only seen in northern Africa and the Middle East, was spotted. Join us for this unusual and very special trip. -

This is related to its great cul- tural significance, since the ancient Greeks considered this mountain as the habitat of their Gods, ever since Zeus became the dominant figure of the ancient Greek re- ligion and consequently the protagonist of the cultural regime. Before the genera- tion of Zeus, Olympus was inhabited by the generation of Cronus. In this paper we shall refer to a lesser known mythological reference which, in our opinion, presents similarities to the geotectonic evolution of the wider area of Olympus. According to Apollodorus and other great authors, the God Poseidon and Iphimedia had twin sons, the Aloades, namely Otus and Ephialtes, who showed a tendency to gigantism. When they reached the age of nine, they were about 16 m. tall and 4.5 m. wide. -

It is also a period in Sparta's history too often neglected by historians both past and present. There is no monograph directly concerned with Hellenistic Sparta. For the most part, this period is briefly and only inci dentally covered in works dealing either with the whole history of ancient Sparta, or simply as a part of Hellenic or Hellenistic 1 2 history in toto. Both Pierre Roussel and Eug&ne Cavaignac, in their respective surveys of Spartan history, have written clear and concise chapters on the Hellenistic period. Because of the scope of their subject, however, they were forced to limit them selves to only the most important events and people of this time, and great gaps are left in between. -

The second part deals with the destruction of rare plants and its causes and the third part deals with suggested remedies. PART 1. A list of the species and other taxa of the Greek flora which, in my opinion, require protection is annexed to this report. ln order to explain the comparatively great number of plants which appear in this list, 1 would mention that the flora of this country is one of the richest of Europe. containing about 6,000 taxa, a number consid� erably larger than that of France, Belgium and Switzerland put together, in spite of the fact that the total expanse of these countries is more than six times that of Greece. ln addition, as mentioned below, this country has a very large number of endemics, in fact, in proportion to her size, Greece has more endemics than any other European country. For the compilation of this list, 1 have reviewed the flora of the following districts of Greece : l. Continental Greece ( Sterea He lias). 2. Peloponnese. 3. Thessaly. 4. Epirus. 5. The island of Euboea (including the Sporades islands). -

LA MIA VIA CRETESE LA TRAVERSATA A PIEDI DELL’ISOLA DI CRETA DA OVEST A EST SUL SENTIERO EUROPEO E4 Questo è il diario di un mio cammino fatto tra settembre e ottobre 2016. La traversata a piedi dell’isola di Creta lungo il sentiero europeo E4 o via Cretese. Già da un po’ di anni avevo in mente di fare questo cammino e per via di una cosa o l’altra continuavo a rimandarlo. Quest’anno è l’anno giusto, l’allenamento c’è così l’entusiasmo e la voglia di partire. Ho deciso di farlo da ovest a est, ho studiato per bene le tappe, mi sono procurato le tracce gps messe a disposizione da Luca Gianotti che ha riscoperto questo cammino e ha fatto un bel sito con molte informazioni (www.camminacreta.wordpress.com e www.cretanway.eu). Il periodo che ho scelto è l’autunno poiché non fa troppo caldo le giornate sono ancora lunghe, il clima è perfetto per il trekking. Inoltre il turismo inizia a calare considerevolmente e questo è un bene soprattutto nella zona sud-ovest quella più turistica. Ho iniziato il cammino a Kissamos una cittadina sulla costa nord a ovest di Chania e dopo 23 giorni sono arrivato a Kato Zakros all’estremità orientale cioè dove finisce il tratto cretese del sentiero E4 e anche dove finisce l’isola. Oltre c’è solo il mare. Dopo ho fatto altri due giorni di cammino fino a Sitia la città più grossa della parte orientale dell’isola dove si trova l’autobus che porta a Iraklion. -

Murgatroyd Pindar Pythian I Abstract This article concerns the ancient Greek lyric poet Pindar (approximately 518 to 438 B.C.), specifically his first Pythian Ode, and my primary purpose is to supply a new translation of the poem (together with résumé and running commentary for illumination and elaboration), thereby introducing Pindar, the nature of his composition and certain features of his style to the non-specialist. In my transla tion, which is based on the Greek text of Snell & Maehler (1984), I aim above all at accuracy, purity and clarity, and I try to convey to the reader a real idea of the feel and texture of the poem by means of a version which is faithful to the spirit and not just the letter of the Greek. In the essay I provide a résumé, explain the background to the piece, discuss its implications and focus, and treat its major poetic features, such as diction, metre, sound, imagery and structure. Bei eini- germassen ernstem Streben nach Gründlichkeit lag die Gefahr viel weniger in der Möglichkeit einer Unterlassungssünde als in der Schwierigkeit, bei der Materialanhäufung Mass und Ziel zu halten. That is a remaining fact even today due to the lack of easy access, the climate, the clean air, the special flora and fauna, the mountains’ unique geomorphology, their water resources, their sole aesthetics and their particular natural and cultural environment. The related history and mythology have turned them into appealing tourist destinations. Mountain visitors seek both the contact with the natural and social environment but at the same time try to satisfy their need for escape from the daily routine. They also satisfy social and learning needs. Greece is characterized mountainous as it possesses interesting mountains rich in vegetation and water resources with significant mythological and historical heritage. However, as tourist destinations they function seasonally and do not manage to attract a large number of visitors during the summer months. The reason is that Greece has always been identified with the triptych sun, sea, and beach. With the aim to investigate the visitors’ motives of the mountain tourism centers in Greece, a quantity survey has been conducted with the distribution of a structured questionnaire.
