Programme The Executive Board of the World Food Programme has approved a Pledging Alimentqire Target of 52,673 million for the period 2003-2004. A copy of the Board's Mondial decision (WFP/EB.A/2002/10) and document (WFP/EB.A/2002/6-D) are attached for your information.

la approving this target, the members of the Executive Board reiterated their earlier decision that "Pledging conferences have outlived their usefulness and should cease to be convened" (WPP/EB.3/2000/13). Given that less than one percent of the target for the period 2001-2002 was pledged at the last pledging conference in November 2000, the Board requested that this earlier decision be. conveyed to the General Assembly. The Executive Director I understand from the Secretary of the United Nations Pledging Conference that, until the General Assembly reviews the modality of the pledging conference mechanism, it is not possible to delay the "WFP Pledging Conference scheduled for November 2002. The preparatory documents requested will be forwarded directly to the Secretariat.
